Additional info & updates

2/02: Alright then--The show is finally on the road. I sent out almost all apps yesterday (even the ones with much later deadlines) and e-mails from schools saying they've received my application are rolling in by e-mail by the hour.

2/10: Accepted @ W&M, e-mail

2/13: Received W&M acceptance letter with scholarship information and admissions packet via FedEx.
2/13: Accepted @ Emory via FedEx. It was a super thin packet and had the acceptance letter along with an invitation to attend a BLSA admissions day, all-expense-paid. That is pretty awesome...

2/15: Accepted @ Washington U. via e-mail. Awesome! Wash U is one of my top choices and I remember writing a "Why Washington" essay explaining specifically how I was interested in one of their study abroad programs in Utrecht. They said they will be considering me for scholarships.

2/24: Ding @ American U. via e-mail. Naive for hoping they wouldn't practice yield protection (YP)... Hopefully I can get an admit today from somewhere to make up for this atrocity!

2/27: Accepted @ George Washington University via snail mail. Take that, American. There was a handwritten note in the letter saying how impressive my work experience was.

2/29: Accepted @ NYU--my DREAM school--via phone call. Checked the online status checker earlier in the day and it said "decision letter sent." Awesome!!! I wrote a specific "Why NYU?" statement telling them how I first learned about NYU law from my experience abroad and how I immediately knew that would be the best place for me to study international law. I will certainly be going to NYU unless another top-14 gives me an amazing financial aid offer or I get into Harvard or Columbia money. Then I'll have to visit the schools and flip a coin.

*Hmm... I'm going to withdraw from any non top-20 schools as the decisions come in. I paid money to send those apps, might as well see if any of them "wow" me...

3/1: Waitlisted @ W&L via e-mail...
3/1: E-mail from GWU came in telling me they would consider me for scholarships
3/1: E-mail from Washington University saying that I was awarded their "most prestigious" "Scholar in Law" award of $75,000! Wow... that's awesome--shows that people actually believe in my success! But... not sure if this is even comparable to NYU with free room and board...

3/2: Accepted @ Georgetown via snail mail! Wow. It came in this square-shaped letter and I was like "damn I probably got waitlisted." The Dean of admissions wrote me a note saying that I "made a great case" as to why Georgetown is a great fit for me and my interests. I wrote specifically about how Georgetown's mission fits with my experience and interests, and that D.C. is a great place to study law because people can expose themselves to all kind of new experiences. I said it more gracefully, though.

3/2: NYU's acceptance letter came in this kind of eye-torturing, off-purple color (but I'm partially colorblind). In it was a standard admissions letter (no scholarship info--that comes a few weeks from now, I hear). On the admissions letter there was a Class of 2015 post-it note with a message from Assistant Dean Kleinrock saying how my international experience is impressive (he referenced the Hague aka ICTY). There was one more page in the envelope which was an "Intention to Enroll" form.

3/5: Accepted @ U. Illinois U-C via e-mail. Came in at 5:35 PM with scholarship info, explaining very clearly that they are offering me a "50% tuition scholarship."

3/6: Accepted @ Cardozo-Yeshiva via phone call. Person from the admissions office also said I was being awarded a dean's scholarship for 40K per year (120,000) total. Wow

3/7 Accepted @ University of Texas via phone call. Super warm lady called telling me that they mailed out an acceptance packet this morning and that I should hear about scholarships in about 1-2 weeks.
3/7: Accepted @ Indiana University (Bloomington) via e-mail! They offered 120 K scholarship and said I need to respond in April.

3/8: Waitlisted @ UC Berkeley via status checker.

3/8: NYU Financial Aid Award info became available (see above)! All I need to do is press the accept button and I'm NYU Class of 2015! WOW! But I will be patient for now :).

3/13: Accepted @ U Michigan via snail mail. Package contained a plastic, see-through, yellow folder with a generic acceptance letter with a flash drive. ***APPARENTLY... they don't offer scholarships to everyone who they would be okay giving a scholarship to, or something like that. When I withdrew stating lack of scholarship money as a reason, they promptly responded and said their "scholarship matching program" (or something like that) is top notch and that they would match any comparable offers from any schools. Needless to say I was insulted by their trickery and didn't even bother responding to that e-mail...

3/16: Wow I got a letter from UTexas offering me a chancellor's scholarship. This makes my decision much more difficult...

3/23: Accepted @ UC Davis via snail mail. Standard packet, USB, admissions letter, etc. No scholarship info.

7/26: Thought I would give a little update... NYU has been such a pleasure dealing with these past few months. E-mails get responded to very promptly, and their online resources are phenomenal. The only thing left which could change my mind about going to NYU is if I get accepted to Harvard. I'm going to withdraw from Harvard if they don't give me a response by one week before NYU's orientation on August 22nd.

What are some of your notable softs? What do you think helped you get into NYU?

Notable Softs

I put some stuff under "extracurricular information." I think my internship at the ICTY was key. I also had law firm experience and a lot of abroad experience. It was obvious that I was interested in international affairs (I studied abroad in China in high school and Amsterdam in College) and I have studied a ton of languages.

The stuff I wrote in my profile about personal statements... mine was super honest. I think honesty is the one thing that comes through the strongest when people are reading your essays.

Thanks

Hey! Thanks Man. Congrats on your acceptances, you've had a great cycle so far. Barring any huge scholarships from the other schools I'm waiting on, I think I'll be attending W&L in the fall. I can't believe you got WL there! I guess NYU will have to suffice. haha

Thanks

No secrets!

Thank you so much for your comment! My cycle is pretty much over at this point. It's been a long run, with most of my apps submitted in October, so I'm glad to be done. As far as the scholarships, I'm really not sure. I haven't done any negotiating. Those were the original offers. I'm so blessed to have received them! Good luck on the rest of your cycle and congrats on your decisions thus far!
