Extra Curricular Information

I feel I have some explaining to do for people wondering how I've gotten into these schools (even though I'm as shocked as anyone):

-High school teacher in Baltimore as part of Teach For America
-Rhodes scholarship finalist
-Outstanding senior award and graduation speaker
-Very strong letters of recommendation
-Work throughout college
-Significant community involvement

Ultimately, the choice of Stanford over Yale came down to three factors:

1. There were not any graduate school options for my wife within a reasonable distance of New Haven.

2. Relative to my goals, I believe I will receive a better education at Stanford. The abstract/philosophical bent of Yale is unappealing to me.

3. The quality of life in Palo Alto vs. New Haven (this one needs no explanation).

As a side note, Stanford's ASW blew Yale's away. Yale seemed to rely heavily on the fact that they are ranked number one and spent a lot of time playing defense regarding the downsides of the school and its location. On the other hand, Stanford made a compelling, positive case for the quality of education they provide. This is, of course, merely one point of view.

Goodbye, LSN. It's been fun. Good luck to all future applicants!

Additional info & updates

12-16: Under review at Georgetown.

12-22: Under review at Harvard.

1-11: Under review at Berkeley.

1-11: Status says "Decision rendered" at Georgetown.

1-14: Small envelope in the mail from Georgetown. I'm in!

1-22: E-mail from Dean Deal. In at Stanford! She tried to call but my phone is dead at work. I really can't believe it.

1-26: Under review at Duke.

2-17: Call from Texas with an acceptance. Said a scholarship offer would be in the mail.

2-18: E-mail from Berkeley - to committee review.

2-25: The Townes Scholarship plus nonresident tuition waiver from Texas.

3-1: "Priority Reserve" at Duke via e-mail.

3-4: Under review at Chicago.

3-9: Waitlisted at Virginia via e-mail. Not surprising...

3-9: Just after posting the waitlist at Virginia I get a call from Dean Tom at Berkeley. Admitted there.

3-12: In at Northwestern via e-mail.

3-15: In at Cornell via e-mail.

3-15: Harvard's "under review" status updated to today.

3-20: Call (on a Saturday) from Craig Janecek at Yale. Stunner. Absolute stunner.

3-22: Acceptance packet in the mail from Michigan.

3-25: Withdrawfest: Berkeley, Michigan, Northwestern, Cornell, UVA, Duke, Texas, Georgetown.

4-1: Return from spring break to find financial aid letters from Stanford and Yale. Both very generous, but Stanford's grant aid beat Yale's by a good chunk.

4-2: Waitlisted at Chicago. Withdrew.

4-5: Dean's Scholarship at Michigan for $10k/year. It's too bad I won't be going there. They seem very nice.

4-17: Waitlisted at Harvard. First acknowledgment of my application since I went complete almost four months ago. Withdrew.

4-26: Mailed two letters -- a withdrawal to Yale and a deposit to Stanford, with complete confidence that I made the right decision.

i emailed H and S with Y's finaid letter attached. i didn't outright ask them to match, just if they could explain why their offers were lower than Y's. both replied that they would review my file and get back to me. bottom line: i don't think it's taboo at all, and i'd definitely consider doing something similar in your situation (tho of course i have yet to learn if my efforts will actually pay off). good luck!!
