Extra Curricular Information

It's official, Vanderbilt Law, Class of 2014!

Now that my cycle is over (and I couldn't be more happy about where I'm headed) I thought I'd update my "deets"

RA for 1.5 years (highly demanding and unusual at my UG)
Study abroad in England/Ireland/Scotland/Wales for a semester
Study abroad in South Africa
Organized a school and community-wide triathlon that raised $1300 for a local non-profit
Founding member and officer of Sociology Club
Club frisbee member
Worked as an individual campus visit coordinator and tour guide
Was a TA and won a couple of departmental scholarships

2 previous 160s on the LSAT
My GPA dropped about .1 last semester of my senior year, due to my grandfather passing away suddenly directly before finals.

I wrote a Why Vanderbilt (mentioned specific professors, my younger sister attends UG there currently) and a Why Michigan.

Additional info & updates

6/1: Withdrew from Michigan's waitlist today. I love the school, but I don't think I could drop everything and go and I didn't want to take up a spot from someone who would. It's officially officially official, Vandy Law!

5/12: Cornell sent me my financial aid letter. All loans, no scholarships or grants. Lamesauce, but in some ways it's nice because I won't have to debate whether to try to rush it through.

5/5: Found out today that I could just email Cornell to find out about merit-based financial aid (vs. filling out NeedAccess and all that stuff). Sent them an email. Cross your fingers for hearing soon.

4/29: Crap, just got in to Cornell. This puts a wrench in my plans. Gotta figure out financial stuff, but if it's close this could get interesting.

4/24: Apparently Michigan is cutting people from the waitlist. I can't decide if getting cut would be a good thing or a bad thing. Why didn't you love me back Michigan?!

4/9: Vandy FTW! Will wait for Cornell decision (I paid for it!) and see if anything happens with Michigan though

4/5: Just Cornell is left! Visiting Vandy this weekend. Pretty sure it will seal the deal

3/31: WLed at BU. lol.

3/25: IR at Cornell! If they get back to me soon enough, I would seriously consider it. Visited UT today. It's a great school, but I don't think it's really a fit for me. It felt very big and anonymous.

3/22: And then there were two. UT ASW this weekend is pretty critical. I'm excited!

3/21: rejected at Duke. I guess they could tell I was mostly just interested in their name! Only 2 to go!

3/18: What a crappy, crappy day. WLed at UW. Apparently a 9 point gain on your LSAT only changes you from a rejection to a waitlist...

3/18: Waitlisted at Michigan. Heartbroken. Will ride it out until at least April 30th (deposit isn't due at Vandy until May 2nd) What a sucky Friday.

3/16: Dear Michigan, please please please love me like I love you. Love, akili

3/15: WLed at UCLA.

3/11: Decision made at UW. Had been "In Review" since 12/1

3/10: Waitlist letter from BC arrived.

3/8: FINALLY complete at Cornell.

3/7: 20k PER YEAR AT VANDY!!!!!! No stips. Barring a Michigan acceptance, I'm pretty sure I'll be at Vandy next year!!

3/4: Decision rendered at Boston College. Nothing in the mailings and no email acceptance. Looks like a waitlist or ding. Super bummed :(

3/2: Second processing date at Cornell! That seems to mean being 'complete' is imminent. Should also receive scholly information from Vandy on Monday (ish)

2/22: Dinged at UVA. I pretty much knew I wouldn't get in, but I thought/hoped I would at least be waitlisted. This stings.

2/11: "Special Group" in "Preferred Waitlist" at Georgetown. Scholarship package from W&M $15,000 a year, no stips

2/9: $35,000 a year from W&L with a 3.15. Damn. I was ready to withdraw, but that is a HELLUVA offer.

2/8: In at W&M via status checker!!

2/8: Decision mailed at Vandy. Freaking out. Called Fedex...4lbs of Vandy awesomeness are headed my way!!!!!!!!! Beyond excited.

2/4: 12k per year with 2.5 GPA at OSU

1/27: In at GWU!

1/26: $9,500 per year at UT provided I remain in good academic standing. I already will get in-state tuition.

1/24: Holy crap, $33,000 a year from Wake provided I stay in the top 2/3rds. Wow.

1/20: This deserves another entry. IN AT FREAKING UT!!!!!!!!!!!!

1/20: Email from W&L saying I will have a decision posted by 5:00 PM today. In!!! (3:56 pm EST)

1/18: In at Ohio State via email!

1/6: 169!!!! Life just got awesome.

12/11: Retook! I think it went well? (spoiler: it went well!)

12/10: IN AT WAKE! (via email)

11/4: Retaking again in December. Studying my ass off until then.

10/29: Scored a 160. Again. FMYLIFE.

10/28: "Held" at UT-Austin via email

Congrats on the wonderful retake! I'm sure Indy is super proud. I'm stuck at 161, but, oh well. It is what it is. Good luck with all your awesome applications, and let me know if you come up to MI, okay?

Thanks!

Thanks, you too!

Good luck! Looks like we might be classmates someday. Sorry to hear about Colorado, but I'm sure you'll be accepted at places that make CU look like TTT.

Wednesday, September 15 2010 at 08:00 PM

Thanks! I'm excited. And I'm sure you'll hear back soon! Your GPA is higher than mine, and I have a downward trend and sub-par softs during undergrad. Good luck!

Told you! Congrats!

Congrats! Michigan can't be too far behind!

Wednesday, September 15 2010 at 08:00 PM

All things equal, UT is definitely my top choice. It might come down to money, though. I wasn't told anything about scholarships on the phone, but since everyone with my/our numbers seems to be getting a standard amount, I'm still hoping to receive one. I might call and ask if no mention means no money... I'll let you know if I do.

Wednesday, September 15 2010 at 08:00 PM

I called! I didn't ask for specifics, but the office did confirm that not having a mention on the phone (or in the welcome packet) didn't mean no scholarship money - it's a separate process.

Thanks for the kind words :)
Friday, February 26 2010 at 07:00 PM

And best of luck with the rest of your cycle! Congrats on UT!

Congrats on Vandy! I am only a teeny tiny bit jealous. Teeny tiny! :)

Wednesday, September 15 2010 at 08:00 PM

I wish. I'm going to be in Chicago that week - booked the ticket before the ASW dates were out. I'm going to UT@UT Law on the 11th instead. I bet your puppy is adorable. I have a dog, too, plus two accidental cats (long story). I'm pretty much screwed in the finding-an-apartment department now.

Heyo!

on $$ at Vandy- that's awesome!!! Randomly came across your profile and recognized ya from TLS :)

Wednesday, January 12 2011 at 07:00 PM

Interesting cycle, that 60k at vandy is pretty nice. though with your 169/373 i think you've got a decent shot at UM but prolly at sticker. not a bad dilemma to be in if you find yourself there.

Congrats!
Wednesday, September 15 2010 at 08:00 PM

Sad we won't be classmates, but GO YOU AND YOUR VANDY MONEY!

Thursday, February 25 2010 at 07:00 PM

I have no idea why you aren't in with $15k per year yet. Everyone else near our numbers got that. Did you send in your app on scarlet and grey paper or something?

Monday, January 24 2011 at 07:00 PM

thanks!!! i hope you hear back soon, but i think it's going to be good news :)

If......
Thursday, February 25 2010 at 07:00 PM

Michigan doesn't work out for you, I'll see you in Austin in the Fall. (Vandy is terrible ;) I may still be bitter about my waitlist)

Michigan
Saturday, January 01 2011 at 07:00 PM

Yup, likely heading that way. I am visiting the schools I haven't withdrawn from, then making the seat deposit. I hope you hear from them soon!

I'm glad you're thinking about UT again! You seem awesome and I want to meet your dog. Remember, the facilities aren't ugly - they have character.

Have faith! How could they not love you?

Just wanted to say...
Thursday, January 20 2011 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on Texas and Vandy! I am SURE you will hear good news from at least one or two of those waitlists. I'm on the Michigan waitlist too. I'm rooting for both of us. :)

Sorry about UW
Friday, August 14 2009 at 08:00 PM

Very weird. But congrats on Vandy with $! Congrats on the great LSAT too!

Haha!

I wish I were Chuck Norris! Also, I cannot get enough of related jokes. <3u,akili.

Friday, July 10 2009 at 08:00 PM

I haven't heard from Cornell (I put withdrawn, but I'll wait awhile longer). I LOVED Vandy so I don't think I'd pick Michigan at sticker over it.

Thanks!
Monday, January 10 2011 at 07:00 PM

Yeah, I decided two weeks ago. I'm basically done posting on TLS, but I'm looking forward to seeing you at Vandy in the fall!

Vandy vs. Cornell
Friday, July 10 2009 at 08:00 PM

If financial aid puts them in the same ballpark, I'll definitely be visiting Cornell. I have no idea what I'm going to do!

Vandy/Cornell
Wednesday, February 23 2011 at 07:00 PM

Where do you want to work? You are from Texas, and I think Vandy is better for anywhere south of TN. I didn't get into Vandy but from my research/talking to firms Vandy is a better bet for TX, FL, GA, NC, etc..

no
Monday, May 09 2011 at 08:00 PM

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I don't think Vandy is better than Cornell for employment purposes anywhere in the country. By fiance's brothers are both lawyers in Florida and Georgia and both told me that I should go to Duke or Cornell over Vanderbilt when I asked them about these. I don't know which lawyers you spoke with. But anyway, Vanderbilt is a fine choice if it makes more sense financially. Best of luck to you both.

I respectfully disagree.
Friday, July 10 2009 at 08:00 PM

If I wanted NYC then Cornell could be worth it. NYC just isn't that attractive to me. And there's no way I would pay sticker at Cornell! Duke could be another story. Vanderbilt has great employment prospects AND the ability to spread out a bit more in the country (which I love because I'm not sure where I want to work). Also, Nashville is a way cooler city than either Ithaca or Durham. Honestly the best choice for money & job prospects would've been UT but I just didn't like it at all.

Monday, May 09 2011 at 08:00 PM

I'm not saying taking Vanderbilt for money over Cornell at sticker is a bad move necessarily. I was just saying that in a head to head battle between the two, Cornell has better job prospects. I didn't mean to belittle your decision. And I agree about Nashville being an awesome place to go to school!
