Extra Curricular Information

My most prominent soft basically involves a high level of responsibility at work (3/4 to full time) while attending school. Also various other bits and pieces.

Additional info & updates

12-06-08 -- Received UMinnesota letter with offer of $20k/year scholarship so long as I maintain a 2.5 GPA. Also, they offer a travel reimbursement for visiting the school (up to $300 I think it is), but they'll only reimburse if you actually decide to attend. For those on the fence about attending, I don't think that should prove terribly compelling, "Wait, I only get the trip paid back *if* I actually attend?"

12-01-08 -- I received a pleasant email from UMinnesota saying, "We tried to call you earlier, blah blah, welcome to Minnesota Law!, package later." Responded pleasantly, I don't have the heart to tell them they'd need to offer me unspeakable things--blood sacrifice?--before I'd skip out on Texas or Virginia or Texas or the like.

10-27-08 -- I realized I'd never gotten any kind of email verification or anything from Washington University so I sent them an email and apparently, yes, they've received my application and, yes, it is complete. They just didn't see any need to tell me as much. =, oy.

11-01-08 -- I received my acceptance packet from UT! It was mailed 10/30, today I also received a phone call from Monica Ingram, Assistant Dean of Admissions, congratulating me and saying I could look forward to receiving scholarship info in about two weeks or so.

11-07-08 -- I got an acceptance email from Duke :). Mentally, Duke is the main competition for UT right now.

1-15-09 -- A letter was mailed on this date saying that UChicago had held me for later consideration. This isn't a waitlist, they're going to review again later and render a judgment then. They encourage you to submit an additional letter of recommendation, updated transcript, or write one of three essays.
11-10-08 -- $21k from UT ($7k a year); I'm hoping I can figure out a way to get them to increase this amount.

11-20-08 -- Received acceptance from Georgetown--had a nice hand-scrawled note from Andy Cornblatt. It was post-marked 11/17/08 so that's when I marked the acceptance date above.

12-12-08 -- Received acceptance email from WashU; apparently being considered for one of their "Scholars In Law" awards. Hopefully they'll have some kind of travel dealie as I'd actually like to at least see the place.

01-06-08 -- I got an email from Jason Dugas, director of admissions at UVA, asking me to call him. I did so. I was accepted. Hoorah!

01-08-08 -- I got a phone call from Cardozo; I've been accepted with a full tuition scholarship 10k a year living stipend (Can that buy you a box on the street in New York?). (Tuition is currently about 42k a year 10k stipend = 52k *3 = 156k; I assumed there might be tuition increases and rounded off to 160k). The scholarship also requires maintaining a top 40% or so class ranking, which is a major counter.

01-28-08 -- I called Cardozo to withdraw my application. I thought it'd be rude to keep a spot from a potentially interested applicant when I knew beyond a doubt I wouldn't attend--. I'll probably do the same at Minnesota shortly. I'll see if Georgetown offers me anything worth noticing, assuming not, will withdraw there as well. Also, as of this point, I've gotten an acceptance email and a single follow-up email from WashU. I'm really turned off by how unresponsive they are.

02-17-09 -- I got a package with a flash drive from WashU and a pleasant letter that ends--in a strangely plaintive way--with the sentence "Please Come." I honestly wonder why so few of these damn schools seem to understand that--having made the decision to attend--finances are the most important thing I want to hear about from them.

02-17-09 -- I was put on hold by Columbia--ie: No decision now. I have 'til 03/31 to submit more information and by 04/20 (Seriously? Do they smoke a lot of weed at Columbia or something?) they'll render a final decision.

02-18-09 -- At the request of somebody hoping for scholarship money from UMN--apparently they redistribute it from withdrawals?--I withdrew my application from UMN. If nothing else, negative degree weather is not for me.

02-19-09 -- Considering that many are probably waiting for spots that I'm taking up, I also went ahead and withdrew from Georgetown. My understanding is that they don't give out much financial aid and I really don't want to fill out their BS scholarship application about "Why I'm awesome!"

February - March: My account wasn't working for a while. Duke has offered $54k over three years. WashU has offered 110000 over three years--roughly full tuition, I believe--as part of its Scholars In Law scholarship.

March 25th -- Received a scholarship offer of 36k (or 12k/yr) from UVA.

04/13/09 -- Withdrawing from UVA and Duke at last. Withdrawing from UVA was a damn hard thing to do, but I believe I'll be happiest at UT. Also, I'll save 60k in loans.

I took a Powerscore weekend course in August, have just ordered the Logic Games Bible and am looking out for a private tutor... hoping for at least a 10 pt increase here *crosses fingers*

I am excited! I had no idea I would hear this fast. If UT gives you $ right away, will that be the end of your cycle? You have great numbers- I'm sure you have lots of acceptances to come!

Monday, October 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

congrats on your UT acceptance! does that mean you're done with your cycle, and everything else that happens will be a plus?

YAY!

I would love to go to UT! I think if I got a good scholarship offer they'd be at top of my list, right behind Yale.

Monday, July 14 2008 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on UT! I'm very excited. UT is right at the top of my list.

Duke
Monday, July 07 2008 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on acceptances so far! Did you write the "Why Duke?" essay?

Wednesday, October 22 2008 at 08:00 PM

Congratulations on Duke and Texas!

Duke
Monday, July 07 2008 at 08:00 PM

Yeah...I'm really regretting not writing the "Why Duke" essay, but I think I was just burnt out toward the end there. Anyway, good luck with UT...did they offer you in-state?

Update

Heh, yeah I do! I get real excited and stuff. Gotta share it with the world! Congrats on WUSTL! What's your first pick?

line 'em up, knock 'em down good luck with the rest of your cycle

Where
Monday, July 28 2008 at 08:00 PM

Well, I can't assume a Yale acceptance, that's for sure, but if I got in there, I think it would be REALLY hard to turn it down. If I don't, I'll have to take a long look at Harvard, but Texas still has a lot of other factors making it a really good draw for me. I guess it's a three-way cage-match between UT v. Harvard v. the uncertainty of Yale acceptances.

Thanks!

Thanks for the good vibes...not sure when the score will be released either, right before or right after x-mas probably (though the website indicates they will be released on my birthday - 1/2) How is everything on your end? What's your top choice? So far your cycle has been awesome, I look forward to seeking out it turns out!

thanks for all the encouragement
Monday, July 28 2008 at 08:00 PM

Boalt is the only school I think could make my eye sway...but for the most part I only have eyes for Texas, its been a 5 year love affair since high school. It may be a pipe dream however... happy holidays btw...

Monday, July 28 2008 at 08:00 PM

it is but shhhh!...also, new LSAT score: 162! I know its not THE BEST, but a ten point improvement is good! HOPE TO SEE YOU IN THE FALL!

ASW
Monday, July 28 2008 at 08:00 PM

I'll definitely be at UT for the ASW. In fact, I'm pretty set on UT. Are you going to be at the ASW?

thanks!
Wednesday, March 12 2008 at 08:00 PM

I think so, but I'm not positive. I'm going to visit my top choices at their early ASWs, so hopefully I'll know by April where I'm going to end up. how about you- do you think you'll end up at UT?

Friday, January 23 2009 at 07:00 PM

Hey man, You are basically my numbers/color(pasty) twin, and from the other big ass state to boot, so I just wanted to say nice cycle, and here's to hoping for similar luck for myself! Good luck on CLS and Chicago...how set are you on Texas?

Friday, January 23 2009 at 07:00 PM

Yeah, I'd have to say Boalt is among my favorites. I've heard great things about it the last few months, and it's fairly close to home. Although...I'm kind of enjoying this part of the cycle because it's kind of fun because I don't know where I'm going to end up next year.

Friday, January 23 2009 at 07:00 PM

Well, I hear Austin's pretty kick ass, so have fun

Congrats!
Sunday, August 31 2008 at 08:00 PM

Major congrats on your acceptances... you must be thrilled. Quick question-- what did your withdraw letter from schools you were accepted say? I'm not sure how to write one! Thanks!!
