Extra Curricular Information

I applied to six schools that I really thought I could see myself at after visiting.

As of 1/28/09, my LSDAS GPA is up negligibly to 3.89. Not that this matters AT ALL, but nonetheless I sent in an updated transcript because my school does it free and I figured why not.

My most significant extracurricular was being a four-year, D1 athlete.

I'm very grateful to God for the gifts that I have been given and the fantastic options that I had in this cycle.

Additional info & updates

Visited UChicago, Northwestern, Vandy, Duke, UVA, Georgetown, Harvard, and Yale over the summer

10/6 - Harvard Status Check went to "Application Under Review"

10/16 - Harvard email notifying me that my application was now complete and submitted for review

10/16 - Toby Stock email (second Harvard email of the day).. will be out of the office till 10/27 so not expecting a call for another week and a half at least

10/27 - Congratulatory email from Bill Hoye at Duke (I was not Priority Track)

10/28 - Toby Stock called at 9:18 AM (EST).. talked for just under 8 minutes..

10/28 - Talked to a Vandy rep at Law Fair.. said they won't start really reading apps till mid-late November--might notify a few people before the holidays, but don't expect anything till January

11/11 - Received Duke acceptance packet, complete with Duke Law lanyard.. must complete scholarship form "at [my] convenience" but before 3/1.. (this was postmarked 11/3 and may have arrived days ago--I don't check my campus mail all that regularly)

11/19 - Vandy Status Check went to "Decision Mailed"

11/24 - Received Vandy acceptance packet.. they sent a box with an acceptance letter (obviously), scholarship application instructions, prospectus, faculty guide, bumper sticker, etc.. the packet also included the Obiter Dictum, a guide to VULS/Nashville put together by 1Ls (we're talking 200 pages, spiral bound).. the faculty guide and Obiter Dictum are very cool..

11/25 - Toby Stock called to welcome me to the HLS Class of 2012 (11:29 AM EST)..

12/5 - Harvard Status Check says "Admissions Binder Sent" today

12/10 - Harvard binder arrived today. This thing is thick. I mean, it holds its own with Vandy's. Lots of information that, of course, I could not stop reading.

1/8 - Phone call from Ann Perry at University of Chicago welcoming me to the Class of 2012 (2:06 PM EST).. (and apparently Status Checker was updated to "Decision Pending" today)

1/16 - Received Chicago admission materials today (I think it arrived yesterday).. nice booklet with faculty profiles and student directory as well as another packet with info on the school, etc.

2/13 - Scholarship from Chicago arrived by mail (post-marked 2/9, but I just picked up my mail today).. $42,000 over three years

2/26 - Withdrawing from Duke today by email

2/26 - Accepted at UVA.. I emailed them via the status check page to make sure that they still had my app, etc. since I hadn't heard anything since the first of October.. got an email asking me to call.. kind of strange

3/3 - Email from Todd Morton at Vanderbilt to set up a phone interview tomorrow regarding my Law Scholars application.

3/4 - Talked with Dean Morton for just over half an hour.. Really enjoyed the interview.. He said I should hear back tomorrow..

3/5 - Dean Morton called to offer me a Law Scholar Merit Award.. full tuition with $5,000 stipend..

3/14-16 - Harvard ASW.. good time. Left Boston pretty certain that I would be at HLS next year.

3/19-20 - Vandy flew me down for dinner with Law Scholars and the ASD.. also a good time. Felt very wanted there. The faculty were incredibly friendly. I have thinking to do.

3/23 - Called UVA to say I have an April 1 deadline at Vandy and see if I will be getting a good enough offer to consider going to Charlottesville this weekend.. was told I would know Wednesday (3/25).

3/24 - Finally checked my mail back at school to find a nice little rejection letter from Yale, postmarked 3/17.. at this point, I had decided that I don't think I am really a Yale kind of guy anyway.. at least they agree, I guess..

3/25 - Heard from UVA.. full tuition scholarship.. think I will head to Charlottesville for their last ASD on Friday..

3/25 - Withdrew from Chicago via email

4/1 - Decided on Vandy

Good luck with all your school. It does not look like you will need it, however.

It's refreshing to see someone choose the school they like best and not just the highest ranked. I really hope you have a great time at Vanderbilt :)

First of all, this question is kind of ridiculous when you think about it--as if there is something wrong with me for choosing Vanderbilt (and I realize that there's a possibility that you may not have meant it that way). But I will answer it nonetheless... Part of it is just that Vandy did a great job getting me on campus and recruiting me. Yeah, I got the money at UVA, but I almost felt overlooked in the process. Part of it is also that Vanderbilt is an incredible law school. I know it's not Harvard. Or UVA. But it's Vanderbilt, and Vanderbilt Law grads do well for themselves. In fact, five years from now, I'll probably have the same job I would have had no matter where I went. I certainly felt the pressure to choose Harvard or UVA or someplace just because they rank higher than Vandy, but there came a point where I realized that there are more important things than showing off at a cocktail party (and for what that's worth, I think most people would consider Vanderbilt an elite institution anyway).

Plus if you want to show off at a cocktail party, you can just drop your lsat score on them. game over. good for you, man.
