Additional info & updates

Strong PS (tailored for each school) and LORs (faculty, all know me very well). I think my PS must have ticked off Michigan, though. That's fine; they ticked me off, too. Who sends a hand-written invitation to apply with a fee waiver, then waitlists you?

Top 20 fee waivers: Chicago, Columbia, NYU, Penn, Michigan, Vanderbilt, Cornell, Minnesota (Twin Cities), Notre Dame, USC, Wash. U. (St. Louis).

Strong upward GPA trend at degree granting institution (3.8 during last 4 semesters, better than 4.0 for the last 2). There were a couple of lousy grades in the first two years.

I have withdrawn from everywhere but Chicago, as of 4/23.

Sent date = online submission or postmark date.
Received = LSAC report date (or receipt notice, if one was sent). Chicago did not request my LSAC report for 3 weeks, when I called to follow up. Texas took 4 weeks.
Texas complete date = LSAC report sent date.
Michigan went complete only after sending a follow-up e-mail (had not heard anything 6 weeks after receipt e-mail).
Decision dates = date of e-mail, phone call, or postmark.

***************************************************

Vanderbilt acceptance came in #10, white envelope (postmarked 12/22, received 12/24). Very large envelope of stuff, a week later. Dinged by sociology department Ph.D. program (via e-mail) 2/22/05. Received 10k/year need and 8k/year merit aid, 3/11/05.

Duke acceptance came via e-mail, followed by large envelope. $30k scholarship over 5 semesters (notified 3/4/05). Yes, I got the lens cleaning cloth. Duke never sent a complete notice (I just realized this 2/7/05).

NYU acceptance came in a fairly thin (7 pages), brown, letter-size envelope (postmarked 1/10, received 1/13). I applied for various scholarships/fellowships and am waiting for info on interviews, etc. I also got a contact from the Islamic Law Students Association, at the request of the Admissions Committee, which I think is awesome, since I'm a Christian. $15k/year Dean's Scholarship (3/31).

UVA acceptance came by phone on 1/19 (updated on applicants' website on 1/18), with letter to follow (letter arrived 1/20 - thin, cream color envelope). $14/year merit scholarship received 3/31 (letter dated 3/28).

Penn acceptance by e-mail from Derek Meeker. Penn Portfolio arrived 2/3. Lots of goodies, thereafter. Dinged by sociology Ph.D. program (via US mail), 3/18/05. Penn Law offered $4k/yr Dean's Scholarship + $24k (total) in need-based aid, but then asks my parents for 59% of their (modest) income. Is this a joke?

Chicago acceptance by phone call from Ann Perry. I went to the Atlanta Wine Mess on 3/8. Scholarship for $33k over 3 years, with possible $6,600 extra after 2L summer.

Columbia acceptance by e-mail (3/9). Snail mail version came 3/14.

Harvard ding in plain, white envelope, received 3/19. Dinged by Harvard sociology Ph.D. program, 3/3.

Yale online chat 2/11 (they swear it has no bearing on your chances, though). Dinged by Yale sociology Ph.D. program (via e-mail), 3/11/05. Also, phone call from the YLS admissions office on 4/20, telling me that no final decision has been reached (I requested an update), but I should hear by Friday or early next week. Rejection came by e-mail, 4/21.

Michigan waitlist by e-mail. I counter-dinged promptly.

Texas acceptance by snail mail (white envelope with 4/1 "WE'RE TEXAS" postmark), received 4/4 (had not gone to decision on the website at that time). 5k / year and in-state tuition through the Tom C. Clark Fellows scholarship (notified 4/9).

I should have cancelled the first time. It was anxiety, and I had my sisters wedding, and a trip to Poland all coming up within three weeks of taking the test in July. I was to busy/stressed to clear my mind . 2nd time (Dec.) I was able to prep a bit more for games, watched the time limit better. Really, I don't have a good story, I was just too goofy to realize what a bad day it had been. It hurts now, avg 165 when my lowest preptest was 164.

That's funny. Are apps are so similar for the first three lines, and then if all breaks down. Good luck dude. (Though I don't think you'll need it.)

Thanks!

Congrats to you, you're pretty well set! I abandoned the Columbia app because they asked nosy questions about my parents 'lives that I felt were not appropriate; I don't want my apps connected to my parents. Since I hate BigLaw and my parents aren't helping with finances ($80K for ugrad was enough, apparently...) I only applied to schools that give merit aid to student without public-interest experience. I know I'm smart enough :) but I know my heart isn't in it for a top law school. I applied to NYU a couple weeks behind you; where's my decision?! My best friend just got a math postdoc at Duke, and I could work at current job part time if I moved to Durham (which I recently realized isn't inthe mountains), so now I'm kicking myself for not hitting Duke. Can I trade in my NYU app?

Howdy emc, I saw your xoxohth post today. Congrats on Chicago! I may see you there. Best of luck with H, Y, and Columbia. Unless, of course, you feel a particular affinity for the great state of Michigan, in which case I count you amongst my comrades. Warm regards, LevDavid

Harvard Ding

Hah, so we have the same numbers, the same major, and a perfect correspondance in decisions where received, including the Harvard ding on the same day. I hope the pattern holds for NYU, Chicago and Columbia. (Though NYU's been sitting on my app for too long...) Anyhow, goodluck with Yale, and who knows, maybe I'll see you at Chicago.

That's awesome

Hey grouch, That's hilarious, how well our apps have matched up. Hope to see you at Chicago. Oh, and congrats on the HLS ding. I'm feeling very prestigious.

Thanks, kyrgyzgirl. I take it you're Kyrgyzstani; what do you think of what's happening in your homeland, right now? Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. I actually have no doubts that some admissions folks do look at LSN and other sites. Frankly, I don't really care, as long as they take care before using any information they find against applicants. Have fun at Yale!

Thanks for sharing about your mother; that must be stressful! I do hope things settle down, quickly, over there. Anyway, it looks like I'm going to Chicago, though I'm waiting on Yale, before making a final decision.

Decision
Sunday, September 04 2005 at 08:00 PM

I'm heading to Chicago. It was my first choice, anyway, in terms of intellectual environment, social life, and setting, and the Yale ding seals it. At last, my applications cycle is over!

Hey jrg83, Congrats on reaching a decision! What made you choose Chicago over Columbia? It sounded like you were leaning towards Columbia. Anyway, I'll look forward to meeting you at Chicago!

my visit sealed the deal-- i was really impressed with the school, the classes, the campus, the current students, and the city itself. fantastic. can't wait to meet you there in the fall. where are you thinking of living? i've sent in an application for regents-- it seemed to me to be the nicest accommodation (although a bit far from the law school itself). -jessica

Re: Chicago!

Jessica, I also applied at Regents. It seems like there are a lot of good options, housing-wise, but the mini-community there clinched it, for me. I'm entering after a few years of work, so not being isolated is somewhat important.

Congrats!
