My decision ultimately came down to a few schools: Boulder (my dream school since 2015, Oregon, Lewis and Clark, and Loyola Chicago). I requested an increase in my scholarship award from each.
U of O said they don't increase but offered other ways in which I can reduce the amount I am borrowing. Loyola Chicago said they do not increase as well.
After visiting, and knowing this had been my dream school since 2015, I was looking for any reason to go. Wanting to go into public interest reducing my future debt to income ratio is important so I asked for an increase. They said they would get back to me in one week so I emailed and asked for an update after 10 days. They extended it for a week. Then they did not get back to me again for 9 more days so I emailed. I received another extension, and then they sent me (and everyone I met during the admitted students event) a generic mass email saying they will not increase any awards. I was also unable to get a hold of anyone during this time about my LILAC application. I sent two emails that both went unanswered. This was a tough one for me since I would have attended with very little funding. But the lack of timeliness and lack of communication left a bad taste in my mouth.
After asking for a scholarship reconsideration, Lewis and Clark was the only school that increased my award (15k). They also invited me to apply to two more programs that offer increased funding for 1L's. The email I received was extremely personal and it was pleasant to hear that they took the time to read my request and reread my application.
After looking at a lot of LinkedIn pages for the offices I want to work for and the employment stats for U of O and Lewis and Clark, I am heading to Lewis and Clark! I'm in love with the campus, and they made me feel like they truly wanted me to attend. I also know a few undergrad friends who are 3L's there and they have loved their experience. Now to house hunt...
Read that scholarship offer real careful, almost half the scholarships they give out get reduced or eliminated. Remember, youre being graded on a curve against folks just as smart as you.
