I'd take Michigan over UVA simply b/c it has such tremendous interdisciplinary opportunities. I imagine they will match your efforts as they matched Duke's offer to me. I hate cold weather too, but it would have been a decent incentive to stay indoors and do my work!
lol, called Mich and they gave no more. Is it worth 21k and suffering the cold?
Ren, I need someone cool in Charlottesville. Someone with a shred of creativity and originality. Por favor? Not worth the cold--you take the same shit at both schools, let's be honest.
Hi there... I think you should pick between UVA and UMich based on desired work location after graduation. If you want to work on the east coast in some fashion, UVA is great (particularly in the DC area). Michigan places very well in the Midwest and West. Both schools place in New York, but I would think that UVA has a geographical advantage. (I only got into UMich, but if I had gotten into UVA, I'd probably be torn too--especially about the weather! In the end, however, you gotta do what's best for you. Have you heard the coin theory? Flip a coin, and if you don't like the results, go to the other school...)
Hey Ren, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Also, you may have left your email, but I can't seem to see it, so I'm answering here... I got the grant based on need. According to everything I've read, the grant may be increased or decreased based on summer earnings. If you make more in subsequent summers than you have been making THIS summer, you may have your grant reduced. By how much? I don't know. (This should be especially interesting for me, seeing as I made money this last year because I was employed full time. Next year I won't be, so even if I get a job over the summer, I still won't make more than I have currently made. Weird, no?) Given that Michigan is the best school I got into, attending was a no-brainer, and I'm not going to worry about the protential cost difference. (I'm willing to pay an extra 20k to go to Mich over NU; I think the reputation and the nature of the program itself are worth it.) Your case is different however--you are also considering UVA. Like I said before, however, I would base your decision on where you want to end up in the end--not on the money factor. (Unless you want Public Interest, in which case I'd say Michigan because their LRAP program kicks serious butt...)
Looking at your info, you basically stand to save upto 15k over the 3 years if you go to UVA, right? If you were to mysteriously lose your Mich grants after the first year, you'd be saving 33k over three years by going to UVA. Not to be trivial or anything, but that's--at worst--a mid-sized sedan. If everything were to stay the same, you'd save the difference of an economy car. Pick the school you want to go to based on your interests--your degree will serve you much longer than that mid-sized sedan ever could... Hope this helps! I'm also anooddduck on LSD, so you can PM me there if you want...
on your blog after like twenty minutes of searching. Looking forward to trying to figure out who you are at orientation...I'll be the guy who only attends the absolutely most severely required events and who looks like he's trying really hard to give hiimself an attitude adjustment about law school.
Well there's several pics on the site so hopefully you'll be able to recognize me... Just go, Hey, I'm juanquero2 from LSN. THAT would be the coolest. Or maybe just hold a sign up like in airports that says "Ren"
Congrats on Virginia! Both Mich and UVA are great places from what I hear. I would personally go to UVA since I'm from Miami, Florida originally and I'm not fond of 5 month winters. I wish you the best.
