Additional info & updates

I took the LSAT three times, and my score was a disappointment each time. I want to be a lawyer so bad... I only hope my other experience can make up for it. I give my faith to God to make anything possible!

I have had a difficult life, but I have a great resume, great app essay, and good references. Those have really helped me along.

After being initially waitlisted by NYU, I was finally accepted, but without enough in financial aid to make the cost worth it. I'm going to be at the University of Michigan in the fall!

Michigan and maybe NYU

I am as surprised about that as I'm sure everyone else is. I applied to the better schools with the expectation that I would be flatly rejected. I can't give a good explanation how that did not end up being the case. That being said, I think my resume, application essay, and recommendations played a role. Right now I'm holding off on accepting at Michigan until I hear from NYU.

Reasons for getting in/waitlisted at those schools is pretty clear, not that its your fault or anything, but go to be realistic about why things may go your way. Good luck.

I do not use the "race card"
Tuesday, April 06 2010 at 08:00 PM

It is entirely presumptuous to assume that my admission to NYU and Michigan was based solely on affirmative action, or that I used "the race card" as you called it to get myself into top schools. Do you really think that there is such a shortage of other numerically more-qualified minority candidates to these schools that they would have to accept someone with my numbers? Do you see a pattern of underqualified minority candidates getting into these schools? There are more strengths to my resume than just the color of my skin. I was the first in my family to be able to attend college. My parents died when I was 14, and I was left taking care of five siblings. Before I graduated college I was already a published author and poet. I have been active in the community. I successfully led a campaign, against all odds, to save a local historical landmark from demolition. I worked within significant financial and social constraints to make something of myself, and race has very rarely been a consideration in that.

loshanda, you shouldn't feel the need to explain yourself to anyone. as you say it is presumptuous for anyone to assume that it is solely one's race (not one's accomplishments, qualifications and cirmcumstances combined) that help you advance in life. considering factors such as race/gender/sexuality (or any NT characteristic) may be advantageous for some, just as considering references, personal connections, parents' resources, group memberships can be advantageous for others in getting that job or internship? your race is a part of you and it shapes your experiences in life. it is ridiculous to think that minorities can or should detach themselves from their identities, just as it is ridiculous for someone to think that well-connected and wealthy kids (most of whom are white in this country) don't or shouldn't use their connections gained from their socioeconomic status to promote their stations in life. (and if they say they got to where they are exclusively on their own, they are fooling themselves, because their circumstances in life enabled them to spend $20,000 on that LSAT tutor, afforded them a work-free undergrad experience and helped them get that internship). everyone has an advantage of some kind or another (and what may be an advantage in one regard, can also be seen a disadvantage in another). that you got there, doesn't mean you are any less capable than others who have higher qualitative factors. in fact, loshanda, it sounds like you have a lot of unique experiences to bring to the table, without which, law schools and the legal profession in general would be filled with bland, socially inept, uninteresting robots.

Hey - congrats on the acceptances! I too have similar numbers to yourself, and am black as well. For your application to Case was it for the part time or the full time program...I'm on the w/l for the partime and desperately want to get in!
