Damn UPenn for making me wait so long for a simple reject. I would appreciate the courtesy of them explaining why they rejected me instead of a form letter, too.

I hate getting waitlisted, especially after I send additional great alum LORs (TWO!), additional letters of interest, & significant writing sample from work, to those t14 schools. I know my stats are marginal (to stretch the truth) for Ivy League schools, but I honestly thought they looked at the whole package for deferrals. Naivete firmly squashed.

Waitlisted a second time by Northwestern on 6/7. Now on the shortened summer waitlist. Do I even care? Not sure. If I were more energetic, I wouldn't mind a last minute move to Chicago. Unfortunately, I am lazy.
----

Summary of This Process: Applying to law school was one of the least positive things I did in the past year and a half. My ego was torn apart, I realized that educational institutions are possibly more interested in money/reputation than teaching and helping people, and had to watch several dear friends (also amazing students) get rejected by schools where I knew they would succeed. That was awful. Love you guys! My recommendation to future applicants: fuck the rankings and go wherever you want. Ivy League tuition isn't worth paying. Concentrate instead on doing well in law school and networking. Worth more than a fancy Ivy League diploma, IMO.

Thanks for all the comments!

I'm hoping to hear of some "incentive" from Iowa as well... Here's to both of our good fortune in that area.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess that might explain why nobody has responded to my email concerning aid, sent about a week ago.

WISC scholarship

How did you approach the Dean about a scholarship? Did u fax him a copy of a scholarship offer from a comparable school? HELP, I NEED MONEY FROM THEM, TOO!!

Hey Chloe, Why Indiana over UW or UMN? Matt

speaking of soft factors...
Wednesday, July 06 2005 at 08:00 PM

My wife disliked Champaign and fell in love with Bloomington on our whirlwind visits this past week. Looks likely that we may see you there; confirming after the next open house. :) Take care! Matt

Thanks..

for the well wishes, ChloeP. Good luck in Indiana! I am happy that there are people out there who look at things other than rankings. And I agree about SU...they seem much nicer than UW, at least.

Does this mean you chose Bloomington? If so, please (for the love of God woman) contact WI and tell them you are giving up your spot so I can get in! :)

Re: IUB Visit
Wednesday, July 06 2005 at 08:00 PM

We took a tour of the campus, town, and law building on our own, and were duly impressed. I'm visiting again for a formal Open House in a couple of weeks in order to get a better idea of the program, and to meet some of the admitted students and faculty. If all goes well--which, after your comments, I'm expecting it will--we'll most likely end up there. So, see you in the fall...? :) Matt

Hey Chloe! I don't think there was any single factor that made me decide on Indiana. As I mentioned, my wife liked the area...and she'll be paying the bills...But the admitted students, faculty, and staff were awesome, and I really enjoyed the class I sat in on too. Indiana is also less expensive, so we will have more flexibility to study abroad, work out of state in the summers, and live in a nicer apartment. (We're coming from a house, so this last concern is not minor.) Anyway, I am hoping to participate in the summer start program; I haven't committed to it yet, but plan to shortly. Is that something you're interested in as well? Matt

UVA

Chloe, Thanks for the kind words about UVA. I think I am probably leaning towards going there, and I'm pretty damn excited about it. I'm totally with you on being waitlisted. I think a school should just have to make up their mind about candidates. None of this waffling crap. Best of luck at Indiana.

super congrats

Your stats are awesome, and no fears on the ivy league let downs. Indiana is a great program and i think you will be so happy there! Lots of luck, you will do great things! ~ Becky

Words of Wisdom

Thanks for the comments on my numbers. I agree that the admissions process is sometimes unfair. You got accepted to some wonderful schools (I would have had hard time turning down Washington St. Louis personally) and have some nice scholarship offers as well. I wish you well. - johnstfm

Congrats on IU

In a perfect world, I'd be joining you at IU. On my visit, I was also extremely impressed with the quality of the faculty/staff at IU. I didn't sit in on a class at Duke, but out of Harvard, UMich, and Indiana.. the profs at Indiana were the most interesting. Bloomington is a great town and the wooded view from the law library is beautiful. While Duke ended up being a better choice for us (based on job market for my wife and other factors), I think you made a very wise decision.

surroundings
Thursday, April 28 2005 at 08:00 PM

Surroundings are important (part of my reason for picking Duke over UMich -- the rest is on my board). People try to say "its only three years", but that is three years of your life you can never get back. My undergrad routinely ranked as having one of the highest work loads in the country, but it was a blast because of where I was and the people around me. If you aren't happy someplace, you are not likely to do well and it probably won't matter that you went to a bit higher ranking school. (A very close friend of mine learned this the hard way the last few years.)

I am from a small town in northern Indiana, about 4 hrs. from Bloomington. I had planned to go to the University of Florida, but then IU came through with the big scholarship. If you have any questions about Bloomington, let me know.

modest...haha...
Thursday, May 12 2005 at 08:00 PM

thanks for the vote of confidence, but, i'm NOT modest, i'm honest! my gpa, gosh, it's abismal. haha. the lsat score, yeah, i'm ok with it, but i had hoped to do better. i was testing in the 170's, but alas, it wasnt in the plans i guess. (i DID have issues of disagreeing with the answer to many questions, and reasons why my answers werent correct) but anyway...i'm THRILLED to have gotten into IU, even though my heart was set on the east coast. why'd u pick IU? and dont worry 'bout those t14'ers. they're snobs. and they dont know what's good for them and what's not. :P -joel

I will probably not attend berkeley because they are much more expensive than USC or Virginia. Damn shame.

Congrats

I just decided on IU. I'll see you in July at the summer start program.

summer reading
Saturday, June 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hi, I have a favor to ask, I moved to Bloomington this weekend and lost the paper listing the reading assignment for next week. Is there any way you can let me know what it is? Thanks!
