Additional info & updates

15 years F/T WE. Worked F/T while finishing my undergrad degree. Took 12 years off in between community college and university. Unfortunately, I didn't do as well in community college as at the university level resulting in a big descrepancy between my cumulative GPA and my degree granting GPA. I wrote an adendum trying to explain away this descrepancy. Unfortunately, I have no excuse for the LSAT. I took a course through the Princeton Review (a very expensive course) and it did not improve my final score at all! I got the exact same score on the actual LSAT as I got the very first time I took a practice test. I was scoring over 160 on the few practice tests just before the actual exam and I felt good after taking the test (Oct. 04), but I guess my good feeling was wrong.

I applied through the regular, full-time admissions process to all schools except University of San Francisco. USF suggested that I apply through Special Admission Program, which I did.

Chapman acceptance came in large, thin white envelope.

Southwestern acceptance came in a large, white envelope.

Notre Dame, UC Hastings , Tulane and Boalt Hall rejections came in letter-sized white envelopes.

UC Davis rejection came via their statuscheck webpage. Also, came in the mail in a letter-sized envelope.

Pepperdine rejection came in beige letter-sized envelope.

USF acceptance came in a large, manilla envelope with a $15,000 scholarship for first year only.

3/14/05 Southwestern $15,000 Schumacher Scholarship - $5,000 a year.

3/30/05 Sent $300 seat deposit to Southwestern, still hoping for good news from UCLA, USC, USD or Loyola. Decided on Southwestern vs. USF due to location and where I want to work upon graduation. After talking via e-mail to some former USF & Southwestern students and a recruiting coordinator at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, I decided that since I want to work in SoCal, I need to go to a school in SoCal.

Withdrew from USF & Chapman after being accepted.
Withdrew from SCU before decison was made.

04/11/05 Received financial aid offer from Southwestern which included an additional "University Scholarship" of $3,000

UCLA, USD & USC rejections came in white letter-sized envelopes.

Waitlist letter from Loyola came in a white, letter-sized envelope.

I have pretty much decided to not go to law school afterall. I sent back my waitlist reply to Loyola stating so. I came to the conclusion that at 35 years old, I really don't want to work my ass off for the next 3 years only to come out making under $100K and have at least that much in loans to pay back. If I was in my 20's, things would be different. Instead, I'm going to go into real estate. I may re-apply next year, but only to UCLA & USC. At this point in my life, I think those are the only school "worth" going to for me.

Thanks for the kind comments. Good luck on the schools still pending. I'm sure you'll get into one of your top choices.

Unfortunately I applied through the regular application process, not LEOP. Applying through LEOP probably would have hepled me.

USF application

Just a heads up, but I have a 152 LSAT, 2.9 Undergrad GPA and a 3.56 MBA GPA and I just received my rejection letter from USF on 2/17/04. Thought you might like to know.

I actually did not apply through the special admissions program, looking back I guess maybe I should have but I am hoping for the best. Thanks again for the kind words and good luck with the rest of your apps and congrats on all your acceptances.

Congratulations!
Thursday, May 05 2005 at 08:00 PM

Many congrats on your acceptances -- especially the free $$ at USF! I had a very similar experience with the LSAT, but just think -- we were ultimately successful despite the stupid thing and we never have to take it again! Best of luck to you!

Just out of curiosity, when is the deposit for Southwestern due?

re:southwestern

Southwestern requires a $300 deposit by 4/1/05 and another $200 by 7/1/05.

Similar Circumstances
Monday, August 22 2005 at 08:00 PM

Our circumstances look somewhat familiar...my JC GPA was pretty bad, which hurts my overall, even though I did pretty well at UCD...where did you do your undergrad? Hood luck with everything, I'm still waiting for everyone's rejections.

I did my undergrad at UC Riverside.

thx & good luck to you too!

Thanks for the heads up. I have heard that before. I'm still hoping to hear good news from UCLA, USC, Loyola or USD. Probably wishful thinking.

SW vs SCU
Sunday, July 17 2005 at 08:00 PM

I am deciding between Southwestern and Santa Clara.my main concern was getting employment in LA after graduationdo you mind sharing what the recruiter from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher said? Thanks

good luck
Wednesday, August 17 2005 at 08:00 PM

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you with your other schools.

SW vs. SCU
Friday, September 09 2005 at 08:00 PM

Here is what she said when I asked for advice in choosing between SW & USF, "First off, congratulations on the schools that have accepted you thus far. If you find that the three schools are your only options, and based on your future plans to work in Southern California, I would go with Southwestern University. Many of the large firms in Southern California recruit from Southwestern more than they do from Chapman or USF. As you may know, finding a job at a large law firm is getting extremely competitive as more and more students enter law school. My best advice to you would be to make sure you do very well at law school, whichever law school you attend. If you are unable to get into UCLA or USC, try to transfer into one of those schools after your first year. Gibson, Dunn only looks at the very top at Southwestern, San Diego and Loyola. We go deeper into the UCLA and USC classes and we do not recruit from Chapman or USF. Although our firm is known to be stricter in its hiring practices, many other large firms follow similar hiring practices." I hope this helps you - Good Luck!

thanks a lot for the link to that guy's blog...though it seems like he's a little TOO infatuated with the school =P sorry to see that you've only received one acceptance thus far. every cloud's got its silver lining though...means you won't have to fuss over which school to decide! best of luck with the remaining schools

Loyola

Is it me or is Loyola taking forever on making a decision?

Princeton Review

I took the PR course as well and had the same experience as you. My score did not go up at all. I committed a lot of time and energy to the course and did all of the homework. It was such a waste of time. I feel your pain(especially in the wallet)!

Loyola
Saturday, August 20 2005 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on the Waitlist. Are you going to keep waiting or are you set on Southwestern? I'm in the same boat. I've deposited at SCU, but I'm holding out for Davis. Best of luck to you! BTW, did your online status at Loyola change to decision before you received the letter? And, did you apply for full-time only?

Congrats!

Hey! Thanks for peeking! I decided to go to Northeastern when lo and behold today I get an acceptance from USF with the 15,000 scholarhip and possibly a 3500 grant. So now, I'm going to visit USF. I don't know what to do! I rejected 7,000 at Pace to go to NE but now it's more than double that! Any advice?

re: Loyola
Friday, September 09 2005 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the congrats. I applied to Loyola's full-time program only. I didn't check my online status, so I'm not sure if it changed. I would much rather go to Loyola than Southwestern, but I have pretty much decided to not go to law school afterall. Good Luck to you!

re: Loyola

At least you decided early enough that law school is not for you! Good luck to you in your future endeavors! The real estate market is really hot right now and I know lots of people who are switching over to that field or doing real estate on the side to earn some extra $$$. I wish you much success!

RE: Quick Question
Friday, September 09 2005 at 08:00 PM

Sorry if there is a delay on getting back to you, I don't check this site that often anymore. For USF, I did not add anything special except an addendum for my cumulative GPA. They actually contacted me and suggested that I fill out the Special Admissions application, which I did. You may want to include the Special Admissions application when you apply. Good Luck to you!

Hey yeah I actually did fax them and say that I was extremely interested but that was the first week in March... do you think it would be bad/harmful if I were to send over another one?

USD

How long did you really study for your LSAT? I am aiming to get a score like yours since I am doing a retake.
