Additional info & updates

I wrote what I believe to be a powerful PS and DS. I've been through quite alot in my life and I tried at least stratch the surface in my essays.

I wrote "Why X" Essays for: UNC, Michigan, Notre Dame & Duke. I greatly tailored my Why UNC essay toward public service and my Why ND essay toward my background, religion and volunteer work, both which I believe helped me secure a scholarships.

Possibly retaking in June, but want to see how this cycle goes. It really sucks to retake. I said to myself before the cycle began I won't settle for anything outside the Top 30.

163 is from October, I retook in December and misbubbled the whole RC section so I missed 15 on that section alone, ended up with a 161. Honestly don't know what happened, but I have to take the dive and just apply this cycle and hopefully some schools look past my numbers. UPDATE: NOT RETAKING.

Just to clarify, I ED'ed to UVa after I got rejected Duke ED.

Also, scholarships posted are total amounts over 3 years.

2/27: Finalist for the Chancellor Scholarship at UNC. Interviewed this weekend, will keep everyone posted. FWIW, UNC is a beautiful school and even more beautiful community, they presented the school in a great light and it really makes me want to be there this fall.

3/3: Recipient of the Chancellors' Merit Award at UNC. Didn't get the full-ride, but still got 75% tuition at UNC. I realize that the selection seemed to be more numbers based than interview based because I know I killed the interview. Either way, I am grateful to get 75% with my numbers and UNC is a phenomenal school. I am very blessed! God is good.

3/7: Shit, in at Fordham PT today. My decision just got tough. Ugh.

3/11: In at Notre Dame Law School today! Definitely one of my top choices. However, I would like a little scholarship money to sweeten the deal.

Also, Fordham just gave me 20 grand over four years (b/c of Part-Time program).

This has been a productive day, probably because it's before spring break. Brooklyn awarded me the Richardson Scholarship and the Centennial Grant which totals 14 grand a year, which is renewable annually.

Oh, and ding'ed at NYU. Wah.

3/12: Got my admit packet from NDLS, they gave me a small scholly of 12 grand a year. I e-mailed them to try and match UNC. Crossing my fingers.

3/15: WL'ed at William & Mary today. Don't care in the least bit, withdrew.

3/23: Still waiting to hear back from NDLS for my scholarship negotiation. Either way, it is becoming my first choice. It's reputation nationally blows away every other school I've gotten into. I am really blessed to have the option of attending Notre Dame.

4/2: Just got back from NDLS and was blown away. Between the job placement, culture of the school and the aesthetic qualities the actual campus has to offer, I want to be there. It will be tough to stomach South Bend and it will be tough to be away from my family and girlfriend for 3 years, but sometimes in life you have to just man up and sacrifice for your future. So, I believe it's that time for me. Oh, and also they upped my scholarship. So, unless I catch a hail mary at the end of the cycle, it looks like Notre Dame it is!

4/30: I haven't updated this in a while, I still haven't heard anything from Cornell, but I withdrew from everywhere else and I put my deposit down at Notre Dame. I'm very excited for next year and blessed for this opportunity.

5/6: Brooklyn Law School sent me an e-mail raising my scholarship 10 K a year bringing it to about 30 K a year. A very generous offer, but I immediately declined.

Still no word from Cornell.

Thanks for the congrats about UNC! Do you think you'll be attending this cycle, or retaking and waiting to reapply? I'm sorry about UVA. They are an awesome school, and I'm not sure why they would ding you, rather than put you on the WL. Good luck this cycle! I'll keep checking back to see where you stand!

Hey there, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Not much in the way of and "amazing story" here. What's listed under extracurricular info is pretty spot on: not necessarily impressive or unimpressive. I thought my PS was pretty good and there was a common thread running throughout my app but to answer your question, yes, I definitely think the Hispanic status (URM or not) helped. Good luck on the rest of your cycle and congrats on racking up some pretty swanky acceptances thus far

haha I don't feel like being Cuban helped me at all this cycle (except for maybe the Michigan waitlist). That's okay with me though. Do you think it helped you?

p.s.

I'm not actually sure you're Cuban. guess I just assumed. I was just looking around on LSN to see how other non mx/pr hispanics have been doing this cycle. congrats on your acceptances btw

I think my my essays really put me over the top at UNC. I have alot of volunteer work, which I tied into a Why UNC essay about Public Service. I suggest writing an essay on public service, they love that at UNC. With that being said, even with my large scholarship at UNC, I am leaning toward Notre Dame, however UNC is a great school and great option for someone looking to secure employment in NC or the south atlantic.
