I assume you are a fellow NUer... just curious why you didn't apply there because I feel like you could certainly get in. I'd love to go there, but it is a big reach for me with my LSAT...

I am leaning towards UVa. I know Chicago is ranked higher, but I think quality of life at Uva is better, and I value that more. Will I see you in Charlottesville next year?

where are you leaning? do you still think Duke $ might win you over? also, are you planning to withdraw from waitlists/deferred schools?

Sorry about the delayed response - not sure if this info will still be relevant -- but: it sounds like you got the same call as all of us other Penn WL->admits. Penn is notoriously finicky with their yield (% of accepted people who end up attending the school), so I'm guessing the whole 'verbal commitment' thing is a way for them to fudge their numbers, i.e. if we say 'we can't give a verbal commitment' they can say that they never officially accepted us, thereby preserving their yield. Seems a bit shady (or bitchy) to me, but, eh, what can we do? Best of luck!

Is that $44k strictly need-based financial aid, or is their any merit $ mixed in? Penn is giving me a really hard time in terms of coming up with merit $ - they have yet to give me a solid figure. Anyway, to be honest, if you are just comparing Penn & UVA, I would say that, with the 44k from Penn, you really can't go wrong with that decision: you are getting more $ from what is widely regarded as a better school. (Especially if you enjoy the interdisciplinary approach) However, you should definitely visit the campus of both schools. If you absolutely hate Penn's environ, you wouldn't be hurting yourself in the least to fall back on UVA. Visits (IMHO) are hugely important in this process. GL!

Definitely go with UVA

These are my reasons for second thoughts: 1. I think I like Charlottesville more than Philly. I have been around big cities my whole life and would like to see what a college town is like before I end up in NYC. 2. QOL seems to be better at UVa. I think students who want to enjoy life while in law school self-select into UVa. 3. The school is bigger. Even though I generally would like a smaller school (point Penn), with a larger class size there are more clinics and journals from which to choose. Why I like Penn: 1. I think they place slightly better into the NYC market. Even though UVa sends more grads there, Penn grads seem to be more concentrated in better firms. 2. Small class size 3. Closer to home (trivial I know but I have been far away the past 4 years and would like to be close to fam/friends) 4. It's not public, so it's in complete control of itself where as Virginia has to deal with rules from the legislature (like the 40% requirement) 5. It's easy to get around Philly Moral of the story, I'm contacting some lawyers I know who work at firms where I would one day like to work. I'm going to ask them for their impressions about the schools and see if Penn actually does place better in NYC (this is the key arg. in Penn's favor).

This is in response to your post on my page, not your own (nicely informative) post just above: 1. Actually (sadly) it's quite the opposite - I'm growing less and less enchanted with Penn. I feel like they are somewhat jerking me around. I was fairly clear to them that their ability to offer me merit $ would be an important part of my decision. It's been ... like 10 days since they first called. I've talked maybe 3 or 4 times to them. And, as it stands, they are still very noncomittal in terms of whether they can offer merit $. Penn has always been VERY high on my 'interested in attending your school' list, but how could I pass up a 45k UVA, 36k Chicago, or even 25k Columbia (all merit) for a $0.00 Penn? I know they want me to attend: they are really encouraging me to visit. But I'm wondering if I should bother. Because even if I fall more in love with the school, it's not going to justify passing up a T6 with merit $.

(I know I sound pissed above, and it's because I am, because if Penn could even just cough up something, I would probably be signing on the dotted line. They wouldn't even have to match. Just something.) 2. From what I've read/seen/heard, Penn basically comes out ahead of UVA in most categories related to placement, how deep firms will dig into the % class, reputation, OCI breadth, etc. My other impression is the difference between the two isn't THAT huge ... which is the case for most closely ranked T14s. I think ultimately it's up to the individual student to shape his/her experience. If I was in your place and I felt 100% more comfortable/inlove with UVA, I wouldn't hesitate to go there over Penn. However, if all else is equal in terms of your opinion of the two schools, I think Penn does come out ahead. Good luck with your choice!
