---------------------------------------

[ a thread from Maya Angelou]

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Additional info & updates

*7/17/07 Lawschoolnumbers.com has been bugging out. Accepted at Pace Law. Debating between Pace and Syracuse, what do you think is better?

*5/2/07 Rejected CUNY. How did I get rejected from a 4 tier school and accepted from 3 tier? I'm so confused.

*5/2/07 I called Seton Hall law re my application status. They told me a decision has been made and mailed but cannot reveal the decision over the phone. The tone of the voice sounded like I got rejected b/c she used the word "dear." My feelings are correct. Rejected.

* 4/30/07 Small thin envelope: Wait listed at St. John's University. I hope i get in!

* 4/25/07 Villanova: called admissions and was told that I have been placed on the Wait list. Very very surprised and excited!

[Albany or Syracuse? Please leave your comments.]

*4/24/07 I called Syracuse to checkup on my application. They congratulated me on being accepted and told me that I will be receiving a letter by Friday with the official information.

*4/21/07 Dinged at #1 choice: Rutgers Newark.

*4/19/07 UMaryland: Small white envelope. Rejected. Sigh ... I have to continue to trust in God's providence.

*4/9/07 Boston College: Small white envelope. dinged.

*4/9/07 Pittsburgh: Small white envelope. Dinged at University of Pittsburgh.

*4/7/07 Hofstra: Small white envelope. Wait listed. Decided to remain under consideration until beginning of orientation. I'm not sure if I truly want to go here but I need all the options I can get. It seems like my scores are too low to get anywhere. I'm starting to get discouraged beyond control and beyond the ability to hide it.

*4/07/07 Albany: Big envelope. Accepted. Thank you Lord.

* 3/31/07 UCONN: Dinged. Thin white envelope.

* 3/31/07 Pace: Thin white envelope - wait listed. I was somewhat surprised that I was waitlisted. I'm starting to think that maybe I won't get in any schools this cycle.

* 3/29/07 Notre Dame: Thin white envelope - rejection letter. I figured I had no chance of getting in but now I know for sure.

* 3/27/07 Penn State: Email notifying me that I have been placed on the wait list. However, they have guaranteed me a spot in the Fall of 2008 with an $8,000 scholarship if i defer my application. What should i do? Please leave your suggestions as they are greatly appreciated.

* 3/20/07 Rutgers Camden: Thin white envelope. Waitlisted. If you have been accepted to Rutgers Camden and are not intending on enrolling there, please withdraw your application for the less fortunate.. Camden is one of my top choices. Thank you so much.

* 3/6/07 New York Law School: Thin white envelope with rejection letter. It stung a lot because I thought i had a good chance of going there and it was my first response from any law schools. Looks like I might not get my JD after all.

I do not have a GPA. My school required alot of writing and researching and we had to provide work that was of a B level or higher to pass a class. We had a written evaluation but no alphanumerical equiv. Hofstra looks at your whole file and what you have to offer outside of numbers. If you haven't already I recommend submitting a diversity statement. It worked for me. Best of luck!!!

Hey, I mentioned how I know they have many outstanding applicants, but that I believe I would contribute greatly to the law school community. Also explained how I feel very strongly that said school would be a perfect fit for me. I hope this helps, I dont remember word for word but I did try to convey the idea that I am a good candidate for their school

Congrats on your acceptance and waitlists. For Newark, as a recall, I only applied for the Full-time program. I'm 31 and they are supposedly kind to "older" students. I'm waitlisted at Penn State too, but I didn't get the 2008 part of the deal. Personally, I would go somewhere else and if I still wanted Penn State I would transfer. But then again, I'm 31 and don't want to put this off any longer. Next year, what we know for sure, is that we'll be a year older. If we complete a year of law school or not, is yet to be determined. Go with your heart, my Law School Warrior Friend.

Hey, yes Jones is a Christian-based university. I attended the open house and was completely blown away. Basically, they said that they all believe and that they would talk about God and Jesus in class, so be ready for it. One of the professors holds a weekly bible study! Some of the other professors quoted bible verses to show that their clinical programs go along with what Jesus taught. Amazing! I was waiting for the swat or F.B.I to swoop in...I've attended public schools all of my life and have never heard teachers talk openly about God! This is one reason that I chose this school. I was really impressed by their faith. They offer a law and christianity class, which I hear is really good. Also, they expressed that they like to foster idealism and the fact that we can actually make a difference in the world, etc., whereas most schools stamp that out of you...leaving you cynical and pessimistic. Also, they mentioned that they would related the law to biblical ideals, etc. from time to time in class too. If you are serious about law and about Christianity, this is the place to be. I visited Cumberland, which is also Christian, but did not get this vibe from them. To me, Jones has been unique. Also, it does place well in the bottom half of the state. Cumberland has the upper half pretty well. UA places everywhere. I have an uncle who attended Jones. He is a highly competent and respected attorney in his area. My wife and I will be returning to work with him after school. He has two other partners--one from Cumberland and one from Alabama--but I would not take either of them over my uncle. Not to say that he is better, just that they are relatively on par. Thus, I believe that it is a good school. Otherwise, I would not be attending. I got into some very good schools, but I am attending Jones because I do not believe that they are any better (maybe only reputation a little). Also, Jones just got accredited, and are really boosting their programs and reputation. They just added 4 (I think) new professors. They recently began 2 new clinics and just got a new clinical director as well as advocacy director (they finished 8th out of 178 teams in one of the tournaments this year!). Also, the building is very nice and quite new and up-to-date. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about it. Also, it is cheaper than any other private school to which I applied. These are some of the things that led me to commit myself to Jones.

Also, Jones accepts applications until June 1 I believe, so you have enough time to apply!

This waitlist business is killing me. What are you shooting for? Who do you want a positive phone call from the most? Im hoping for Fordham? We both applied late in the cycle and i noticed we both have yet to hear back from Cardozo. Best of Luck!

Syracuse

I probably should have applied to Syracuse. By the time that I realized I had a good chance of getting in there, I was already in at NYLS and Albany, so I said 'fuck it,'
