Additional info & updates

Out of school several years.
Very good work experience since that time.

Chiashu stats (2005, except Cornell and Columbia unavailable, so used 2004):
Columbia 66
Cornell 70
Duke 88
Emory 99
Georgetown 87 (though this is full-time)
Harvard 49
Northwestern 77
Notre Dame 95
Michigan 62
Texas 84
UCLA 85
Georgia 98
Virginia 90
Vanderbilt 95
Washington and Lee 96
William and Mary 95

12/24: Yes, I know I went overboard with the apps! I'm done now, I promise.
1/5: Ok, added a couple more because of fee waivers. Now REALLY done!
1/13: Accepted at UGA according to online status checker. Haven't received mail yet.
1/16: Got an email from Duke saying my decision letter is on its way! In at Emory via snail mail!
1/18: In at Duke, JD/LLM in Intl and Comp Law!
1/19: In at Washington and Lee! I think my undergrad is finally going to send Columbia my dean's cert. I had to track it down on the phone, and I'm pretty sure they were lying to me when they said my request had just arrived yesterday, taking four weeks to get to them in the mail from two states away. I think it was sitting in a pile somewhere.
1/20: Both Virginia and Michigan status checkers changed to Decision overnight.
1/22: In at Virginia! Also received the letters from Georgia and W&L.
1/24: It's far too quiet here while I wait for my Michigan decision, but on the bright side, my undergrad has finally sent my dean's cert to Columbia. Thank goodness!
1/25: My first scholarship offer, $18,000 a year from Washington and Lee! Still no word from Michigan.
1/29: In at Michigan, for fall! Still haven't received packet, but found out by getting an email followup to the packet. Afternoon update: Received Michigan packet.
2/2: Received scholarship offer from UGA for $3K a year.
2/7: In at Georgetown part-time, with a nice little personal handwritten note at the bottom! Probably won't go, as I'd rather quit my job and go somewhere with a lower cost of living, full-time. This is my fall-back plan in case we have trouble selling our townhouse and I have to keep working. But it's a great school, and I'd be proud to go there.
2/9: In at Notre Dame by email, with $20,000 per year! And the biggest news for me is the Duke scholarship, which is extremely tempting. $48K over six semesters (no GPA requirement), plus $3K for this summer and $1200 for the summer institute in Geneva/Hong Kong (requirements of the JD/LLM).
2/13: In at UCLA by phone!
2/15: In at William and Mary by snail mail.
2/19: Vanderbilt status checker says my decision has been mailed. On a very annoying note, it appears that my Columbia dean's cert saga is not over. :( It took me a month to get my undergrad to send it (supposedly the mail took a month to go from me two states away to them), and now a month after that, Columbia still hasn't received it.
2/20: Accepted at Northwestern by email! I thought this one might be a ding, since I didn't do the interview (fee waiver came after deadline for off-campus interviews had passed).
2/23: Accepted at Vanderbilt by snail mail!
3/5: $10,000 per year scholarships at both Michigan and Vanderbilt, by snail mail. A two scholarship day is a good day!
3/8: The missing Dean's Cert at Columbia must have been found!
3/13: I think I'm in at Texas, because I got an email inviting me to the Admitted Students' Weekend. So maybe the letter is in the mail.
3/14: Ok, it seems I'm definitely in at Texas, from a second email I got giving me the link to the site for admits.
3/16: So much for a perfect cycle; rejected at Harvard. Got my Texas acceptance letter.
3/21: Received scholarship information from Emory by email.
3/29: Deferred at Columbia. Not surprising considering the Dean's Cert fiasco, but it seems pointless to defer someone so late in the game.
3/31: Scholarship offer from Virginia! It's not huge, but on top of in-state tuition, it makes Virginia a very reasonable option, in terms of cost.
4/30: Waitlisted at Columbia. Whatever. I had already lost interest. But I am annoyed at the whole Dean's Cert fiasco still, because I don't feel I got a fair shot, and I know a lot of other people who had similar issues with them.
5/1: Going to Michigan! I loved it the most, though Duke was a close second (and I loved the JD/LLM program), and Virginia was my cheapest option of the top schools. We're moving in just a few weeks, because our house sold super quickly.

No such luck, unfortunately. But thanks! I'm really happy for you that you got in there. With any luck, I'll meet you at the first ASW.

Congrats on the acceptance! With your LSAT, I predict money will definitely be on its way (as well as several more acceptances undoubtedly). Best of luck to you during the rest of the cycle.

lackingcapacity, thanks! Best wishes to you too... I'll be keeping an eye out to see if you end up going with the JD/LLM program. eakeykit, I posted an answer in your profile. Basically: studied by myself, took lots and lots of practice tests so that I would feel comfortable on test day.

thanks

Thanks for the good thoughts re: CLS. And congrats on your cycle so far! Are you leaning towards anywhere in particular yet?

Hey

Yeah, visited NYU at the beginning of the month -- going to Columbia at the end of the month. At this point I'm really leaning towards staying in the city, so it'll probably be one of those two. What about you? I'm sure all the scholarship offers have been muddying the waters a bit.

I can't believe they deferred you when there are only five weeks left anyway. They're such nutballs. Out of curiousity, why didn't you apply to Penn?

COL

I'm totally with you on COL. It's part of why I can't imagine going to NYU. My fiance and I have both been out of school for five years, so things like a garage, w/d, room for our dog, are all big considerations. Fortunately Philadelphia is actually more affordable than where we are now, but still has good job opportunities for my SO. I do envy your husband's ability to telecommute -- Michigan and Virginia both seem like great places.

yes, i graduate in a week. i was offered the deferral because i told them i was thinking about taking a year off to teach in costa rica - so, if i defer, that is what i will do. decisions, decisions!
