Extra Curricular Information

Now that this whole acceptance thing is chuggin', I might as well fill in the details. I am ashamed of my adherence to the paranoia trend, and seek to rectify that by listing the following information. Henceforth thusly betwixt.

Undergrad EC's and honors:
Habitat for Humanity
University Union Committee member
Campus radio station DJ, Ops staff member, Local Music Staff Member, Local Music Director
Golden Key
National Society of Collegiate Scholars
Presidential Scholar 3 semesters
Dean's List 4 semesters
Study Abroad in Costa Rica (ecological field research)
Worked FT every summer in on campus lab doing research on poultry nutrition projects

Masters stuff:
Studied contaminant degradation in soil and impact on soil microbes
Worked PT at EPA on phytoremediation research project
Vice President/Cofounder of Agronomy Graduate Student Association

Since graduation:
Worked as technician in private environmental testing lab
Worked as technician in state petroleum regulatory lab
Volunteer with FAST

So, as you can probably tell, I'm a science kid turned law kid. And, as is probably quite obvious, I'm looking into a career in environmental law. I heart the public sector.

Additional info & updates

**Scholarship units are dollars/yr (Is that IUPAC approved?)

10/25 all applications have been transmitted via LSDAS. Baylor, Duke, and L&C have all so far requestd reports. I'm still waiting on ONE recommendation to clear, hopefully within the next day or so.

10/28 Received a letter from Baylor thanking me for applying. I know it's no guarantee of anything, but it's still exciting to know the process has begun.

10/30 2nd letter of recommendation received and processed. Now it's all out of my hands! Still waiting on UGA, Vermont, and Maryland to request my report.

11/3 Vermont has requested my report, but they told me over the phone that apps won't be reviewed until December. Notified of complete file at Baylor.

11/6 UGA has requested my report. I received a letter 2 days ago from L&C with my status login info. Anyone have any clues about Maryland's timeline? They're the only ones I have yet to hear from.

11/9 I listed my "complete" status at FSU as today. It may have been complete earlier, but I didn't check the online status until today. Received email from UOregon about file completion. Listed complete on L&C website.

11/13 Acceptance letter from FSU!! WOOHOO!! Came in a small, moderately puffy envelope. Let's hear it for quick turn-around! I also received a follow-up phone call from the Dir. of Admissions on the 14th. Personal touches like that matter a lot.

12/8 Acceptance notification from Vermont!! My email spam filter complicated things a bit, but I was able to get things straight. YAY! Received the HUGE envelope a couple of days later.

12/13 Status checker for UGA indicates that I've been waitlisted. UGA, you were my home for undergrad. UGA, you were my home for a Masters degree. Alas, it appears another will gain my favor for my law degree.

12/15 Offered $15,000/yr from Vermont, contingent upon maintaining 2.5 GPA. Very exciting!

12/18 Acceptance letter from Maryland. The thin envelope would have had me fooled if it weren't for the "Congratulations!" on the outside. They promise more literature in coming days.

12/21 Acceptance folder from Pace! The enclosed letter mentioned the Env. Center Merit Scholarship offer. I hadn't heard anything from them, and really didn't expect to before Christmas!

1/5 Received letter with Goldstein Envrionmental Merit Scholarship offer from FSU. Hand-signed congratulations from Nancy Benavides! Very nice.

1/26 Acceptance email from Baylor! This was quite a surprise! I was honestly expecting a deferrment, at best. Literature to follow in the mail.

2/9 Acceptance folder from L&C! I'm so excited! Now I have a legitimate excuse to head out to the West Coast in the next month or two.

2/23 Rejection letter from Duke. I sorta figured it was a matter of time, but I just had to apply. That's what reaches are all about, right?

2/26 Acceptance envelope from Oregon! AND a $6,000/yr scholarship offer!

4/7 Sending in my seat deposit to FSU today and sending in all of my withdrawals. It's been fun, but I'm really most excited about being in Tallahassee in the Fall! Let me know if I'll see you there!

Well, as far as I'm concerned, this concludes my application cycle.
Best of luck everyone, and feel free to post any questions or comments!

top choice?

It's actually hard for me to choose! If money isn't a factor, I guess Lewis & Clark tops my list. Duke would be pretty awesome, too. Almost all of the schools I'm applying to have fantastic environmental law programs, so that's why I have a hard time picking.

Pace

You have a great chance for Pace. I know they're not top 100, but their environmental program is really good. I took my LSAT there. The campus is beautiful - multiple buildings - and very welcoming. They're very close to NYC too, FYI.

Good to hear

Thanks for the encouraging words. It's nice to hear some positive testimony about Pace. Of course everything in the viewbook and on their website looks right up my alley, but I appreciate the first-hand view of a "civlian" more. I would love to visit all the schools on my list, but alas, resources are limited and I thought the app fees were a higher priority!

thanks for the comment

I think the law profession gets a bad rep. Yeah, it's full of assholes who are just out there to leech off of society, but it's also full of people who want to do their part to make the world a better place. I like to think I'll be in the latter category :) Incidentally, environmental law in one of my main interests as well. I'm afriad I'm just a naive college student, but I do think I can make a difference. I'm so excited whenever I get a complete notification that I just have to come here and post it immediately! Silly, I know, but you can be assured I'll be constantly updating this thing. And good luck with your own apps! Baylor's is the only campus I've visited, of that list, but it sure is beautiful. Except for being Texans, they're all really cool there. ;)

Hey, Thanks for the message. I was thinking about either patent or possibly environmental. Advice, Waco sucks. I wouldn't go to Baylor unless they offered it to you for really cheap. I say that because I used to live about 2 hours from Waco and my friends that went there always came to Austin to do stuff.

Congrats

Sweet, congrats on the acceptance! That is awesome :)

oh yes :)

I was in class when my phone went off... when I recognized the number, I ran out into the hall, barefoot, and tripped over a chair on the way out, fumbling madly with my phone to flip it open, and I bet I answered it seriously out of breath. Haha, I must have been a pretty funny sight! Thank you for the comment! :) And good luck on your pending apps as well!

For environmental law...

you might consider Utah. They have a respectable program, particular with respect to land use mgmt. If you could stomach Salt Lake City, it may be worth your while to check it out....

UGA
Tuesday, November 14 2006 at 07:00 PM

I think you and I are in the same boat as far as UGA goes. I work in a law firm in Charlotte and a lawyer I know is family friends with a Dean over there. Basically right now they are only accepting their "top 5-10%" applicants. It doesn't necessarily mean we're waitlisted in the traditional sense, more like deferred to the next round of applicants. Stay positive, there is a good chance that you will get in!

FSU

I just got into FSU! They called me (super super nice) at work. Thanks for the encouragement and here's to getting those GA acceptances = )

Woo-Hoo!

Look at all those acceptances - you definitely did something right. :) Congratulations! Way to go with both LC and Oregon.

FSU Money

I was wondering how you were notified about your money to FSU and when you found about it. Also had you filled out your financial aid information prior to finding out?
