Additional info & updates

-> well, so far it looks like I'll be accepting St. Mary's offer. They have labor law and immigration law clinics, which I'm interested in, and their stats are about the same or better than those that have accepted me. Furthermore, the cost of living in San Antonio is very nice. It's really hard to decide against going to Cal West because SD is my hometown. Unfortunately however, CA is in the sh*tter and the cost of living in SD is oppressive. I'm going to withhold my decision until I hear from Florida International, which I understand to be a super long shot.

-Worked full-time throughout college
-Interned at a non-profit law firm
-Have spent the past 2 years in Mexico learning Spanish and teaching English
------
I'm applying to schools where I have at least a 50% chance at acceptance and in cities with reliable public transportation. I'm putting the most importance on those with immigration clinics, as that is the field I wish to specialize in.
My addendum relates my dramatic upward trend in grades with having been independent since 18 and working full-time.
Any suggestions are most welcome.

Good Luck! I we have simillar stats and some of the same schools, have you visited any of them?

no, i haven't visited any of these schools. i'm in mexico. the best idea i have of the schools and the cities they're in is through internet "research."

Same here... similar stats and schools. I'm on the east coast and hopefully will get to visit schools in Texas when I go down in dec. Good luck

I'm in Maryland...I wish I was in Mexico, its really cold up here. I'm going down to Texas for Christmas to visit my family. I'll tour a few schools I applied to while I'm down there

honesty isn't always comforting. thanks for the opinion. really, it's my long shot. I've numbered my choices based on their "fit" with me, not that it means a lot. FIU is the exception to my 50% rule. also, they don't have a part time program.

.. applied to schools in pa and ohio to be closer to my family.. they don't have immigration clinics and their immigration demographic is nothing like the other places i've applied.. but.. you know.

ok, sounds like a good idea.

St. Mary's is a nice scholl and San Antonio is a great city. We have similar numbers, but I am applying for the evening program. Good luck making decisions. I am going kamikazee with St. Mary's.

congrats

Hey how did you receive your notification from the Univ. of District of Columbia. I called them to check my status because the online status tracker has said my file is complete ever since November. Btw dont let anyone tell you how a school picks their students. I personally know people who got in top 1 tier schools who didnt have the "numbers" the school states as their median numbers.

fratboy: yeah, i'm pretty satisfied with my decision on going to SA. the more i look into it, the more interesting the city appears. the only thing that is starting to worry me is the overwhelming number of apartment horror stories on the apartment review forums. . Shavy: Yeah, I've withdrawn everywhere.. I think.. I hope you get in and spend some well needed dollars in my hometown, Americas Finest Ciity. . Gumby: Yeah, it's from a Clockwork Orange! "who do you have at home to tickle your fuzzy warbles?" . jregister: You know, actually, I've never seen a single one of my acceptance/rejection/waitlist letters. I'm in Mexico, and i have my mailing address set to my parents' house. they send me email to tell me what mail i've received. if by "how" you mean if by mail, phone, etc., i think that answers your question: all the schools notified me by mail. Also, soft factors certainly play a role in the schools' decisions, but i think it's a safe blanked generalization to make about all law schools that they rely heavily on those two special numbers. the way i look at it, those two magical numbers are the primary filter. your personal statement detailing how you won the nobel peace prize will never make their cognizance if you got a 140 and 2.0. However if you make it over the first hurdle, then soft factors are weighed. I think it's worth mentioning, too, that some schools are more concerned about your degree awarding school's gpa and not your overall gpa. i have the suspicion that st mary's is concerned more with the former because my overall gpa SUCKS, but i boned up hard when i transfered from the community college to state university and got a 3.6. that's just a guess. it makes sense though because their reply was much sooner than i expected. the moral of the story is that every school is different, but that's not to say that the two numbers aren't as important as people make them out to be.. they really are, but other things count, too.
