So feel free to comment/question and I hope that everyone has a successful application year!

6/1/10 - I'm leaving some of the schools up to give people a sense of how competitive law school admissions is & how unpredictable it truly is. There are several schools that I really expected to have been admitted to and in the end was not even waitlisted.
Otherwise, I have started a blog and will be blogging my way through this law school adventure! Feel free to follow along and share stories and suggestions @ :

http://theprogressivelawstudent.blogspot.com/

-5/23/10 - I suppose Touro must have really been considering my app lol.. I will enthusiastically be attending Cooley-Ann Arbor in January (possibly May given moving in winter may not be so fun). I've met with alumni of Cooley and everyone has good things to say so don't let yourself get caught up in the rankings. Get caught up in the fact that you're going to be a lawyer someday instead!

- 4/30/10- So rejected at famu and nova.. honestly thats really shitty for whatever my opinion counts for these days. I'll be awaiting Touro's rejection letter in the near future, and I will happily take my scholarship & admission to Cooley- Ann Arbor and be going there in January. And Thank You Cooley for being up front about admissions, as 75% of the other schools are clearly misleading. Best of Luck to you all!

-4/19/10- Accepted at Cooley- Ann Arbor! I'm going to do this and start in january so that I can save up money to get started with housing in michigan. Also, I'm planning a public service law career and Cooley is a public service focused school so this works. Also 25% scholarship @Cooley too! Still considering Widener for a little bit, but I don't think I could start there in January.

-4/9/10- No @ JFK U in cal ?! really people? your not even accredited... I'm glad widener sees the positive side of things.

- 4/3/10- 7 schools left, waitlisted at Widener so far! Cooley is continuing the bs about a dismissed misdemeanor that I will more than likely be giving documentation on from here til I die since I've already sent back documentation 3 times now. So... I'm waiting to hear back from: Nova, Cooley, Southern, FAMU, Western New England, Touro, and JFK in Berkeley, CA.

I'm hopeful about most of the remaining schools and completely open to anything available at Widener.

- 4/2/10- Complete @ FAMU, and WAITLISTED at Widener!!! I'm totally excited about this and will be fully open to ft/pt and either campus. Widener is great & I'd be very glad to go there.

-3/29/10- Decision rendered at Ave Maria & Valpo letter in the mail so we'll find out soon.

- 3/22/10- Widener finally shows my file as complete (although its been complete for over a month, yay for processing). Otherwise just still waiting.. I'd take a waitlist by now lol

- 3/13/10- "Denied" at detroit mercy.. yet they refuse to tell you over the phone or email or anything besides the mail. Yet everyone who gets accepted gets notified over the phone. ... Cowards!

-3/12/10- rejected at Jones!! F'ing really??? IF anyone knows somewhere I CAN get in by all means say so ..thanks :) ..im open to non aba school with federal funding.

-3/10/10- Seriously shitty day...Denied at St Thomas (miami) & Oklahoma city.... wow really lame.

- 2/23/2010- Valpo, Western New England, and Nova are all submitted- all part time. I've already received emails from memphis, st thomas, and ok city u. confirming my app and with the exception of memphis saying it should only take 2-3 weeks to make a decision. My Cooley application should be being reviewed this week.

- 2/16/2010 - submitted apps to oklahoma city, memphis, and st thomas-miami, also to UMASS dartmouth/southern new england and to JFK U. in berkeley, CA for non-aba schools.

- 2/11/2010 - Denied at Hamline pt.. disappointed again, really disappointed that Hamline would not review my updated transcript- I was denied before fall semester grades were updated. I've applied to Southern New England School of law in Mass (a non aba school), and I'm also applying to San Joaquin College of Law (another non aba school) outside Fresno, CA. More lower tier FL schools to come as well.

- 1/26/2010 - Denied admission to barry, this was my favorite law school option and would have been really close to home but oh well moving on. For now, Im focusing on getting admitted to Cooley- Ann Arbor over the next week to have something for sure. After that, then on to Famu & a few other more safety schools. Also, I'm applying to Southern New England School of Law in the Cape Cod area of Mass its only regionally accredited but you can still practice in about half the states after some experience. So moving on with some hope!

- 1/16/2010 - I now have a complete law school list, and plan on completing all of my apps by february 1st. My goal is to get into a law school, I'm open to moving and just hoping I can get in someplace- although preferably in Florida. Thankfully there are 11 law schools in the state.

*** 12/30/09 - I have applied to Barry, Hamline, and Cooley Law thus far, and received my december 09 lsat ... a reasonable 149 which I hope will get me in somewhere! I just checked today and my cooley file is complete and should be reviewed soon, I really want to get admitted here very soon so I can have somewhere for sure.

I'm putting you on my watchlist. I identify as a lesbian and I would also be interested in finding out how much weight is put on that in the admissions process...so if you find anything out let me know and I shall do the same! Similarly, I'm from Mississippi and am hoping to escape to a more progressive area but am faced with the dilemma of spending $100,000 more as a consequence (yikes!!) Anyways, good luck!

hi I just noticed your comment thanks for the well wishes! I actually just received my first(and maybe only) acceptance today from western new england. Its not necessarily the school I want to attend but its encouraging nonetheless. You're gpa is actually much higher than mine so I'm sure you'll be getting a group of acceptances. yes I've visited hofsta and touro before. good luck to you!

You know I did one year of undergrad at FAM and if I had the option to leave south Fl I would definitely consider them...good luck this Dec.

FAMU
Tuesday, May 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

So, about a week ago I went to the FAMU Law School open house. I'm very interested in the school because of how affordable it is, as well as being only 100 miles from home. I was quite impressed with the school, and it seems like it will continue to improve. Hope to hear from other people considering FAMU!

Hey

My name is Andrew and I'm also LGBT @ USF SP working on getting into law school this year too! I'm dying to know who you are LOL Good Luck! =P

me again

I took my LSAT down at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. How about you?

did you...
Wednesday, September 23 2009 at 08:00 PM

Hey! Me again! Did you end up writing a diversity statement for any of the schools you are planning on applying to?

Barry vs. St. thomas
Tuesday, November 24 2009 at 07:00 PM

Hey! Originally I preferred St. Thomas to Barry. But after researching Barry its starting to grow on me. Plus, Barry is offering more money...not much, but a little more. So its kind of a tough decision.

Monday, September 28 2009 at 08:00 PM

I visited Barry as well I thought it was nice minus the parking lot, I had to park in the grass along with about 50 other cars because every space was filled. I know a clerk in the courthouse that went to Thomas Cooley and loved it so I applied there. My top choice is William and Mary, its a GREAT school in Virginia. My second choice is Baltimore, which is one of the most popular schools in the MD/DC/VA area. Have you ever visited Florida Coastal? If so what do you think? Good Luck with your cycle!

Cooley
Monday, December 21 2009 at 07:00 PM

Cooley Pros: easy to get in, cheap, above average faculty for tier 3/4, fairly big alumni, big library, cheap cost of living compared to other states. Cons: students are highly competitive, close to 40% of student body flunks out/drops, school has a terrible reputation amongst many people (from their absurd law school ranking pub), it gets cold as hell that far north. I'm only going to cooley if I can't get into any schools in La, Tx, Ar, Ms, Al or Ok. Cooley is aba approved and is a decent option for law if you don't mind living in the northeast. You should definetly apply there for a safety school.... Good luck on your cycle

Monday, September 28 2009 at 08:00 PM

Every law school is going to be extremely competitive as long as your dedicated I wouldn't worry about that to much. It took about a month to hear back from Cooley via snail mail. I was looking up apartments there and found MANY nice looking places for 500 a month, which is a huge plus. When evaluating my schools I also considered where I'd like to live and practice as a lawyer, school rankings change every year. I know an attorney who went to Catholic when it was just a tiny building in DC, now it has a big campus and is a top 100.

Monday, June 08 2009 at 08:00 PM

You asked about Cooley... I have a good friend who is presently enrolled and attending the Grand Rapids Campus. She thinks the professors are helpful but the climate can be challenging. I am definitely off to Michigan if something closer to SC doesnt come to fruition. Good Luck to You!!!

Cooley
Tuesday, November 03 2009 at 07:00 PM

Good luck on your applications! I heard back from Cooley in about a week.

Monday, June 08 2009 at 08:00 PM

I have looked at Charleston and a very good friend of mine graduated from that law school. Given that I am already accepted to Thomas Cooley I only applied to the 3 schools that I really want to go to and Charleston isn't one of them. You on the other hand should take a look at Florida Coastal School of law; given your lsat I think you have a really good chance! You should check it out.

Thomas Cooley
Monday, June 08 2009 at 08:00 PM

The turnaround for this school is about 4-6 weeks. I may see you there!

Cooley or Coastal
Monday, June 08 2009 at 08:00 PM

4-6 weeks for Cooley~ Not really sure about Coastal

Thanks
Sunday, January 25 2009 at 07:00 PM

Thanks good luck on your cycle, great things to come in 2010!

Southern New England
Monday, December 21 2009 at 07:00 PM

I saw you applied to Southern New England a non-aba school. Def don't go there. It is also now the UMass Dartmouth School of Law. A friend of mine went there and got dissmissed and now has to sit out 2 yrs because he went to a non aba school. Apparently, their first official act as the new school was to make a public announcement stating that they would only be offering a little more than half of the current students the chance to return. His roommate said that a lot of students are opting to voluntarily withdrawl from the school so as not to be placed in the same situation that he is in. I just thought I would share that with you.

Done for this cycle
Sunday, January 25 2009 at 07:00 PM

No I'm afraid I am all done for this cycle. I am under reconsideration at FIU and still waiting to hear fr Ave Maria but outside of them STU Summer Conditional is where I am pointing to. Good luck on your cycle.

Sunday, February 14 2010 at 07:00 PM

You could try Texas Southern. They have provisional ABA accredidation.

LGBT
Friday, April 02 2010 at 08:00 PM

You should check out Michigan State because I think they have a fairly large LGBT population.

Congrats on Cooley
Sunday, January 25 2009 at 07:00 PM

Sorry about STU but congrats on Cooley...I have two friends who went there and both are now practicing attorneys.

Cooley Acceptance
Thursday, April 08 2010 at 08:00 PM

Congrats!!! I also got accepted for fall admissions PT. I visited the Aurburn Hills campus a few days ago and was shockingly impressed. I keep hearing really negative comments about the school but also some refreshingly positive comments from practicing attorneys who went to Cooley. What are your thoughts on the school? Do you think you will attend?

Cooley question
Thursday, September 24 2009 at 08:00 PM

What made you decide on Cooley? I've recently met a friend who works at the tpa courthouse that is from Cooley and he is awesome in the courtroom and has great things to say about it. I got accepted for their parttime for Fall. I'm still debating. What swayed your decision?? We're both from TPA! Maybe they like us Florida folks!
