Extra Curricular Information

It's official: Law school can wait, I'm going to save the world first. Teach for America, Chicago 2007 Corps.

-Recommendations- good (advisor read them for me and gave feedback- "way better than most I read.") but only two because the third was taking too long and making me nervous.

-Personal statement is about coming out and losing my parents' support for school. Well written, according to everyone who has read it. a little mushy though.

-Record- if adcomms pay any attention to transcripts, they'll see different major GPAs. Majors are Gender & Women's Studies (3.95ish), Spanish (3.6ish), and International Studies (3.9ish), finishing in 4 years.

-One semester in Spain

-Deans List, Phi Kappa Phi, honors classes each semester, 4 year $8,000 merit scholarship at a top state university.

-Extras- co-chair of a university committee, peer facilitator for freshmen workshops about supporting rape survivors, president of LGBT student group, rape crisis hotline volunteer, organizing a substantial anti-homophobia project, National Day of Silence campus coordinator, spring break volunteer work at domestic violence shelters, rugby team, cast member of Vagina Monologues, organizer for annual fundraiser for american cancer society, a few other smaller things.

-Work experience- straight from undergrad, lots of pink collar stuff- years of nannying, some clerical, some food service, a summer at a big law firm. part time work junior and senior year of college.

Additional info & updates

Good luck to everyone applying this cycle!

reports were sent 11/27 to UChicago, Duke, and GWU; 11/29 to NYU; 12/04 to Berkeley; 12/13 to Northeastern.
complete at Duke 12/07, which means all my stuff is definitely in to LSDAS. no more paranoia. now it's up to the schools...
e-mail from Duke 12/13 saying they've mailed a decision.
e-mail from Northeastern 12/13 saying they've received my application and requested a report.
12/16- acceptance package from Duke. I have a place to go next year!
12/27- phone call from Dean Richard at GWU saying my acceptance will be sent out next week. I have a choice!
1/13- Letter from GWU offering full tuition and first year housing. Holy shit. I have no words.
1/29- Acceptance from Northeastern, rejection from Berkeley. First rejection isn't as harsh as I was expecting.
1/31- finally submitted UCLA. any pysch majors wanting to analyze why it took me so long to apply to one of my top choices, go ahead...
3/1- On hold at Chicago. sending a transcript. update 3/20- sent transcript and letter stating my intent to defer wherever I was admitted to do TFA.
3/8- At least someone in California loves me. In at UCLA via friendly phone call on my way home from work. Won't know about the PILP program for a few more weeks; only 25 slots... So excited about this one! If GWU wasn't wooing me so well, UCLA would be my first choice right now.
3/25ish- Visited GWU, in love with the campus, the school, the MPP with Women's Studies.... beautiful place.
4/16- Notified GWU of intent to defer. I'm officially doing Teach for America in Chicago for two years, teaching high school Spanish.
4/23- rejection from Chicago and waitlist at NYU. I'm actually surprised about the waitlist- why did they wait so long to tell me I was waitlisted? Why not just reject me? Either way, these rejections make me glad I didn't waste the money on the Penn app.

Thanks! Your "softs" look much more interesting than mine, so I'll certainly remember that offer of dinner if we end up near each other. =) So what's your top choice of the moment? Why only one school in California? (I may be biased, but the Bay Area is a fabulous place to live!)

Holy shit is right.

Congrats on the great cycle so far. I was reading some of your stuff and was wondering if you knew anything about the queer community at GW. Good luck with the rest of it.

Yes, Please

I'm a Wildcat, not a Wildkit. I just realized my city was wrong, so I fixed it. I have no hometown, so I get easily confused on where I'm supposed to be. Well, if I'm ever a wise old 3L, I'll be happy to assist in anyway possible. Will you reapply even though you get the deferral? Good luck with TFA! I hear it is amazingly difficult and rewarding. Kudos to you!
