***********************
Got recs from two professors, boss at firm.
Had to write an addendum explaining jump from 2.3 GPA in first two years of college to 3.7 GPA last two years of college. Sent to every school as either optional essay or addendum.
Wrote a strong PS.
Wrote Why NU?, Why Penn? and Michigan's career path.
Sent everyone my resume.

All scholarship info is annual.

I have decided to post my chaishu results, simply for a lack of better things to do. They are the numbers under choice. And it may help some who are thinking about applying to reach schools. In my opinion, do it.

***********************

Thoughts on my cycle:
The only thing I may have done differently is retaking the LSAT in September 2006. I didn't because I knew my score was very good, yet it was 5 points below my average practice test. Still, taking the LSAT sucks, so probably not.

My biggest obstacle in the whole process was trying to explain why I had three Fs on my transcript. I believe I did this with reasonable success. I would not look at my GPA as a bunch of Bs because that would be misleading to other applicants.

I'm done with LSN now. If you have any questions for me, you can find me on LSD.

Additional info & updates

12-28-06: Call from Loyola Chicago, left a voicemail, acceptance with $11,000 recurring scholarship.

01-29-07: Large white envelope from Illinois in the mail. $20,000 recurring scholarship as long as I have good academic standing.

01-30-07: Email from NU. After 20 clicks, I found out I was put on hold. I haven't finished the vast array of financial aid materials, and now I have to write more letters and get more recs.

02-08-07: Email from Michigan. " Because you went to great lengths to apply early in our season, we understand that you may feel some disappointment at not having received your answer yet. We appreciate the anxiety that the law school admissions procedure can cause, and are therefore writing to update you on the status of your file... Please be assured that receiving this email does not mean you will not get an answer until then! It simply indicates that we recognize you have been waiting patiently, and we appreciate that."

What a nice school and a well written email. Cheers!

02-13-07 GW let me in via email! That feels superb.

02-15-07 GULC made a decision. I'm not at home, but fortunately my roommates are there to let me know the news.

02-20-07 Rejected by GULC. I feel like I should care, but I do not. I think I've gone through the five stages of law school applications: excited, nervous, OCD/manic, depressed, and elated. Thankfully, I was elated (UIUC/GW) before depressed, so I don't think I have to go through that one.

02-21-07 The Vanderbilt status checker shows I went complete yesterday. I'm not sure how I feel about my chances there. Meh.

02-22-07 Sent NU a letter of continuing interest. I tried to emphasize succinctly my career goals, and show how NU made it the school of choice. Also mentioned further letter of recommendation is coming.

02-23-07 Sent Michigan a similar letter of continuing interest.

02-24-07 Vanderbilt letter in the mail today. Waitlisted. Oh well. Popped letters in the mail to Vandy and LUC asking my applications to be withdrawn. Good luck to everyone who is waiting on them!

02-28-07 Sent out additional letters of recommendation to NU & Michigan. Recommender is the head of marketing department, who my boss reports to.

03-02-07 Waitlisted at Michigan. In the words of a good friend of mine, le sigh. I will wait for them.

Several hours later... I confirmed that the managing partner at my firm is writing me a recommendation. And then Penn waitlists me. Well, looks like it is all about waiting right now. Maybe this rec will sway someone. Hopeful.

Long day. LORs from the managing partner went to Michigan and NU.

03-05-07 Chicago rejection! Huzzah! Only one school left to hear from and then I will have the general lay of the land.

03-08-07 Solidified plans to visit Michigan, GW (for the ASW) and WashU over the coming weeks. Thankfully, I have personal reasons to go to each city, so worse comes to worse, I have fun.

03-14-07 Went to the GW reception. Fellow admitted students were interesting, school representatives were awesome, and alumni were friendly & approachable. I got a very good vibe from everything about it, but that could've been the vodka. Definitely leaning toward GW.

03-18-07 Just got back from Ann Arbor. Loved it! I shouldn't get my hopes up, but it was well worth the trip.

03-26-07 I just withdrew from UIUC via email. I feel like I just threw $60k out the window. Ugh.

04-01-07 I'm in DC for the GW ASW. The school was very welcoming. I can easily see myself here for three years. The students were very engaging, and there are so many things about the school that intrigue me.

04-05-07 After a lot of deliberation, I decided to write Northwestern a letter that states, if admitted, I will enroll there. In a perfect world, they will let me know before I have to put a seat deposit down at GW.

04-06-07 I toured WashU today. I got a really good impression of the school. Unfortunately, when I sat down with the admissions person afterward and told her that I hadn't received my decision yet, she said all the decisions have been made. Based upon data so far, there have been two acceptances since March 30. As I haven't received an email yet today (and all of their acceptances, and I believe all of their waitlists, have been sent via email), I am guessing a rejection will be in my mail next week. It stings quite a bit.

04-10-07 Waitlisted via email at WashU. Not staying on it, even though I love the school.

04-13-07 Sent a seat deposit into GW today.

05-16-07 Rejected by Northwestern today. I've been so excited about GW for so long, I've decided to go there. While Penn and Michigan have always been at the top of my list, I think I will have just as good an experience at GW (albeit for different reasons). Therefore, I also chose to withdraw from both waitlists. Good luck to everyone else.

Good luck on your apps. That's awesome you were deferred at NU. That's my first choice, but I didn't get my app in until late and don't have as good of an LSAT score. Anyway, I just noticed we applied to some of the same schools.

Thanks man, my phone call with Dean Richard was a little awkward but she is a very nice lady, and I would be happy to go to GW if it comes down to that. In other news, I live in Skokie when I'm not at school...skevanston pride baby

GW - congrats!

thanks! and the same to you. I would love to go to mich - do you have a set first choice?

thanks
Sunday, March 19 2006 at 07:00 PM

congrats to you on GW too. looks like we both hit the jackpot today. i'm leaning towards GW because of better placement in the markets that I'm considering (NYC, DC, LA) U of I is pretty unlikely because i'm not aiming for chicago. WUSTL is probably going to be out unless they come through with an amazing scholarship offer (which i highly doubt.) what about you, where do you stand?

Re:
Saturday, October 21 2006 at 08:00 PM

I would go to either NU or Chicago in a heartbeat (at least I think) if I get in (hardy har), Otherwise, DC and LA are my top locales.

Penn is a great place - i've friends there and have visited. very friendly and collegiate atmosphere, beatiful campus, and while i don't think philly is a 'real' city (i'm a new yorker), it has a lot to offer. hope everything works out!

Thanks, I'm ecstatic about Tulane and will be attending. Congratulations on your acceptances so far and all the best in making your decision.

Thanks Dude

Yeah, heh, looks like you had something akin to a legit addendum yourself? Congrats on getting into your school thus far! GW and U of I are excellent, excellent schools. Wow nice email from Michigan to boot. I didn't get a courtesy "because you've waited so long" email. pssshh. :)

I guess we're both waiting for the same good news from Vanderbilt. Good luck.

Tuesday, November 21 2006 at 07:00 PM

I just saw that two people got waitlisted at Vandy today with numbers similar to mine...once again, I just had to check to make the rest of my day more stressful. I'll try to take your advice but it'll be hard.

Best of luck on the rest of your cycle. Thank you for taking my survey! My thesis is about how cultural variables affect the legitimacy of international law, comparing and contrasting the US and Costa Rica, as well as talking about Costa Rica as an anomoly [sic] in Latin America. :) So, I totally agree and think that you need at least one rejection. Let's you know you really did reach as high as you possibly could! Right now I'm just wishing the rest of my schools would answer already! A "no" would be better than this waiting!

thank you

Hm, guess the "good as it sounds" is referring to the 'lil play by play I gave ? Yeah I was thrilled. Guess it came through like that that too. :) Congrats on UIUC I don't think I've had a chance to say that. Also, any news on U of M?

mich visit
Saturday, October 21 2006 at 08:00 PM

sorry it took so long to get back to you...you can email me with questions. i plan on writing a "continued letter of interest" about my visit one of these days, i need to get my thoughts in order.

Friday, September 29 2006 at 08:00 PM

Apparently you've gotten a taste of the G'town craziness as well. Waitlisted at UPenn and Mich but rejected at GULC? Umm. Whatever. Do you have a first choice among the places you're still considering?

dc
Friday, September 29 2006 at 08:00 PM

I used to work in downtown DC, very near GW -- it's a great location (actually a nicer location than GULC!). I don't know much about Penn; Michigan is a great school, though obviously, being in Ann Arbor would be very different than living in DC. I'm not complaining about my situation - it's hard to make choices, but I feel lucky to have such good ones. If, say, I'd been waitlisted at YLS, it would have been very difficult to decide how long to hold out. I'm pretty much choosing among Stanford, Harvard and Yale right now. I have to visit all three programs, then I'll make a decision. I'm not a total prestige whore -- I'd be seriously considering Michigan if they'd offered me a full scholarship, but they didn't. I'm still waiting to hear from UVA and Chi about money, but it's doubtful they'd offer enough to compete with SLS/HLS/YLS, which all have very good LRAP programs.

I am a senior at NU right now--good luck with the waitlists!

NU
Thursday, December 21 2006 at 07:00 PM

Thank you for your congrats! The first acceptance does always feel good! I just noticed that despite are different GPAs and LSATs, we have the exact same ChiaShu percentage for NU... a whopping 16% chance. Anyway, i think it's great how you've been sending them extra stuff. I am wondering, do you think there is anything I can do at this point to help my chances given that I have not yet heard anything? Is there any way to send a letter of continued interest or extra rec letter without even having been put on a waitlist? I am guessing I am jumping the gun a bit, I just really want to go there and will do whatever is needed to try to show them that... Let me know if you have any suggestions. THANKS!

You're going up to DC this weekend? Perhaps I will see you there.

Thank you!
Thursday, December 21 2006 at 07:00 PM

I was excited about MN, but then I came home to a nice rejection from ND... so that bummed me out a bit. I am crossing my fingers for good things from GW, WashU, and BC (and NU, of course, but that is gonna take a lot more than just crossing my fingers). PS Have you heard anything about writing a letter of continued interest BEFORE hearing from a school? Someone told me I should send one to NU, and I'm curious about what others think of that suggestion.

The money is merit based. I was offered $20000/yr shortly after being accepted. Received an email increasing to $30000 3/28.

thanks
Friday, September 01 2006 at 08:00 PM

for the well wishes! i'm glad you like my lsn page. congrats to you as well! GW is a great school--and you know, I think if you should some serious interest, you have a good chance at a wl-->accept at Mich!

Thanks

I hope that the LSAT can trump a bad gpa! Congrats on your acceptances

Re: Illinois?
Saturday, October 21 2006 at 08:00 PM

Trust me, I'm as astounded as can be. Even if I am YPable, my connections to the university and the state should have given them SOME kind of assurance that it was in serious consideration - but screw em, their loss. Right now I'm leaning toward Cornell, but who knows where I'll actually end up. NU officially put me on hold yesterday, so I'm hopin and prayin for that to come through. How about you, are you all decided on GW if NU doesn't pull through?

UCLA or GWU?
Saturday, July 15 2006 at 08:00 PM

Neither, actually! I'm doing Teach for America and deferring GW. Maybe I'll find you when you're a wise old 3L and I'm a newbie? I actually grew up in Evanston but am down in Chambana... you're a Wildkit, I assume?

re: Northwestern
Saturday, October 21 2006 at 08:00 PM

To be honest, I have no idea what to think of the hold. I'm happy that I've made it at least that far in light of my lack of work experience, and I'm very much hoping I get in so that I can stay close to my family and friends, and have an easier time getting a job in Chicago

you made a decision!
Saturday, October 21 2006 at 08:00 PM

congrats - your cycle's done! i admire your confidence and wonderful attitude - good luck at GW, i know you'll love it.
