Extra Curricular Information

Over ten years of work experience, ranging from digging ditches to Operations/Project Management & Network design and administration.

Ex military (US ARMY)

Traveled abroad for three years before college figuring out what to do with my life.

Right in the middle of that cliched "Bleach blond hair & piercings w/ tattoos - punk who doesn't care" transition into upstanding member of society thing...

It's kinda scary...

I quit drinking, smoking, and "other things" and now I'm ready to become President of the United States!!! (No really, I mean it)

Planning to take an arabic class this spring, that should be interesting.

Additional info & updates

Berkeley is a pipe dream.

Hastings is a long-shot.

BYU would be a very hard decision to make if I was accepted, really tough honor code.

Probably looking between Santa Clara, San Francisco, and McGeorge as top "realistic" schools

I'll keep you all posted about anything new.

10/18 - Just sent in my app to Hastings. For some reason I am so nervous about this one. Probably because it's my number 1 choice among the schools that I am likely to get into.

10/19 - Took a nap today. Thought about not thinking about law school apps. Forgot to scan my DD Form 214 (stupid military brand/paper you have to keep forever if you served); University of Utah is the only school that wants to see it.

10/20 - I was working today and I realized how happy that I am that I am in a position to quit my job in a few months and devote everything to school. I've been in school full-time and have worked full-time forever it seems like. To put all of that "split" effort into one area will be great!

Is it just me or do the days drag after you have sent in your apps? I feel like I did the Hastings app a week ago!

10/24 - Email from UC Davis, my app is complete. At least I had something to do today, even if it was only to type in the "complete" date for UCD.

I HATE WAITING!! Especially considering I am going to get my share of bad news...

10/27 - Letter in the mail from McGeorge says my file is complete. They start reviewing apps beginning in December... Thank you for your patience!!! ARGGHHH!!!!

11/02 - Got an email from UC Hastings stating that they had received my application. It just took two weeks. They gave me a id to check status online. I wonder if it will be recognized as complete in time for the ED option. I hope so. More Waiting...

11/11 - Got a postcard from Golden Gate; application complete. Four to six weeks until decision is made there. Soooo.... looks like mid to late December all around....

11/15 - Got an email yesterday from Tulane... App. complete. They will start reviewing apps in early January.

11/21 - Checked online status website for UC Hastings. My file is now complete, Ready to review; should be a few more weeks there.

12/11 - "And a great sadness filled the land..." I got the not so unexpected (but greatly dreaded) rejection letter from UC Hastings.

12/15 - Accepted at McGeorge!!! With Honors - Free First year books, will receive additional consideration for additional scholarships...

I am going to law school...

sweet.

12/16 - Admittance letter from USF. No scholarship info though. I'll have to check out the school in person to decide.

12/21 - Got the acceptance letter from Santa Clara today... It's great to have choices now. For some reason, I didn't think that I would have more than one or two schools to choose from and now I have three already...

Santa Clara is a great school, especially for IP, which is what I want to get into (I already have an IT back ground, so I think that would come in handy for like cyber law or somethin', I dunno). They have an open house on the 18th of January, so I'm going to check them out! Sweet!

12/24 - Acceptance in the mail today from Seton Hall. Plain envelope. Very plain... they want a big deposit too. Meh... who wants to live in New Jersey anyway... ha ha ha

12/26 - You know there's a communication/infrastructure problem when a school (Loyola New Orleans) sends you junk mail begging you to apply three months after they have requested your report from the LSDAS... that's some funny shit!!

12/27 - Got a postcard from Loyola New Orleans - they have recieved my app and will soon request my report!!! That's funny... they did it like three months ago.

Oh well... Blame Katrina and George Bush...

1/4 - Nothing new to report... but I wanted to see if anyone out there (if anyone actually reads this - ha ha ha) who got admitted via Early App to SCU and was going to go to the reception wanted to kick it... if so you can email me at j_a_braxton@hotmail.com.

1/12 - Email from admin person @ Tulane congratulating me and letting me know that info will be sent via snail mail before the end of the month.

1/24 - Letter from Loyola New Orleans, admitted w/ scholarship @ entrance 15,000 renewable if GPA stays above 2.9. More things to think about...

2/7 - Letter from McGeorge... Dean's Scholorship - $10K per year. Sweet... Going to go up on the 10th of March and check the place out... see what's shakin'...

2/8 - Acceptance letter from Golden Gate; Accepted into the Honors Lawyer Program there and given faculty scholorship for $15,000 a year... Going to check out the school soon.

2/28 - The big N-O at UC Davis; I am 0 for 2 at the UCs, and fully expecting 0 for 3. I am going up to see Pacific next week. I think it has come down to the scholorship money at McGeorge and SCU for their strength in IP. I'm going to have to decide soon, the deposit for both is due on April 1.

3/9 - Eh... I'm sure going to Berkeley would have sucked.

3/26 - Paid my deposit to Santa Clara yesterday. Asked them to reconsider me for scholorship money, but regardless, I'm going to SCU next year! I love the area, and the school, and all the faculty I've had a chance to meet!
Later Bitches!!!

4/11 - UPDATE: Santa Clara reconsidered me for scholorship and is giving me $8K a year. Sweet.

BYU Honor Code
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

BYU honor code = No coffee, No tea No Caffeine... No alcohol (not a big drinker, but I likes me some wine) No facial hair (not that I grow it, I just like having the option) No co-habitating You have to remain chaste - Me and my girl would have to get married. Really it's just the life style issues associated with a religious school... I am not especially religious, so that is why it would make for a hard decision. BYU is a GREAT school though, and so there is the dilemma. If I did choose to attend, then I would follow it no problem.

you actually have a life - nice.

That's awesome that you traveled and have had some great life experiences. I'm sure it'll help on the applications too! Good luck - keep us posted.

I'm applying to BYU because my girlfriends family is mormon, and her father owns an apartment complex within five minutes walking distance, so housing, etc. would be taken care. If I got accepted there, I would think of it as an interesting option on the perverbial table. BYU has a lot of bang for the buck!

Congratulations on SCU. I am still waiting and it is driving me insane! Thanks for doing such a good job keeping us up to date with your progress. Any details on the SCU envelope?

SCU Envelope...
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Just a regular sized standard (5 x 9?) envelope... Plainest packaging by far... Not that that's a big deal, after all it did say congrats... blah...blah...blah... There was a flier for some public interest scholarships (why would you want to go to SCU for public interest? - maybe that's just me). Hope you hear soon! Good luck!

Yay for us!

It definitely feels good to know I have a place to go next year. I'll be at the early admit reception. You? Good luck deciding on those other schools. :)

Congrats! I am waiting to hear back (fingers crossed).

Hey
Saturday, December 10 2005 at 07:00 PM

Hey man, thought I'd drop by and see what other acceptances you've gotten. Did you ever go to the early admit reception at SCU? I just received a letter from UOP today offering me a Dean's Scholarship too! I got some hard choices to make. Are you leaning towards any particular school?

Legal Scholars Day

Sweet. goin on the 10th too. Hoping to hear on a scholarship one of these days..

San Deigo?
Saturday, December 10 2005 at 07:00 PM

Right now I'm leaning towards attending a school in SD. Right now I'm interested in the IP arena with a focus on biotechnology and SD is one of the largest biotech hubs in the country. However, one of the reasons why I applied to Santa Clara was because of their strong IP program. But I hear it's more focused on the needs of Silicon Valley, i.e computer stuff and what not. So with my bio background, I don't know if Santa Clara would be the best choice for me. I was really impressed with Cal Western when I visited a little while back but I'm concerned that their tier 4 ranking may limit me in the long run in so far as trying to land a job later on. So basically, now I'm trying to decide btwn a school that is a better fit for me and has offered me a scholarship (Cal Western) and a school with a better name and rank (USD). As of now those are my two top choices. But I'm not ruling anyone out yet. I'll be making a 7 hr drive up to UOP on March 3rd. Maybe I'll see ya there! Take care!

NorCal Schools
Sunday, December 04 2005 at 07:00 PM

Congrats, you got into a lot of schools I applied to :) I see that you got into all of the 3 big schools up North (USF, UoP, SCU). I've only gotten into Pacific so far, but I have no idea how I'm going to decide if any of the others accept me.

UoP Legal Scholar Day?

Did you go on the 3rd by chance? If so, what did you think?

USF vs SCU
Friday, September 16 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hi, congrats on all your acceptances! I'm just wondering how you decided between USF and SCU. Is it because of the IP program? I am leaning towards USF because of location, but it is a tough choice...

scholarship money
