Why Northeastern?
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

If you want to be in Boston, look at BU, BC, and to a lesser extend Haaarvard. I know you are Canadian so you might not be aware, but the reputation of BU and BC kills that of Northeastern.. and I bet they both have better LRAP's too.

congrats on georgetown, lucky7. to answer the question you posed, i'm interested in northeastern because of its public-interest-oriented curriculum and programs, less than its overall reputation. a few people have recommended BU but it seems to have virtually no public-interest programs other than LRAP. BC is still in the running. i think my chances at harvard are slim, and i'm much less likely to get a scholarship there than at other places i'm applying.

I definitly understand wanted to graduate with as little debt as possible - I too am financing my legal education. Though, I guess I\\\'m lucky to be an American in that respect. You are an auto-admit at Northeastern and I\\\'m SURE you will get a hefty scholarship. BTW, I\\\'m glad I give you hope! lol Best of luck!

I was around for the democratizing ed conference, but was not attending per se. So I don't think I would have met you, but it is possible. Did you consider American and its public interest scholars program?

why not harvard
Saturday, November 05 2005 at 07:00 PM

my chances of admission at harvard are low, and the gamble is not worth the application fee.

American

I think your reasons for not applying make sense, though I might have chosen differently in your shoes. I originally was only applying to 4 places - chosen largely for location. I added one for a fee wavier and one for the heck of it, but I chose to apply to American because of its public interest scholarship. Anyway, I hope something great comes through for you. Not sure where you stand on this issue but you might want to look into Baylor (well really any school's) and its policy/actions on sexuality before going. In the US I think that type of policy is a fairly good proxy for the overall politics of a school. So no matter where you stand on that particular issue, it's good to look at that policy. But Baylor in particular has taken some actions that I think are important to know about before attending. Feel free to email me to ask about it.

here's another reason not to apply to harvard: one of the world's premier jackasses, alan dershowitz, not only teaches there but occupies a prestigious chair. and another of the world's premier jackasses, larry summers, is president of the university. there's something really sketchy about a university where this sort of person rises to the top.

one down...

feb. 22: one of the two jackasses named as reasons for not going to harvard has been eliminated.
