Additional info & updates

Interested in public interest/social justice work. So I applied for public interest scholarships at two schools.

Decision date is date on letter or email or phone call (if I have those...)

Scholarships/Financial Aid:
Michigan - Full Darrow Scholarship (tuition + stipend!!)
UNC - Chancellor's Scholarship ($12,500/year)
GULC - Invite for Dean's Scholarship (up to full tuition)
American - Did not receive public interest scholarship so I withdrew

Right now I think Michigan is winning the race, but other schools are still in the running. I just want to have as little debt as possible so I can actually do public interest straight out of school.

UNC is being slow on determining my residency status... it's a complicated story so I understand. Update - I wrote them asking to be considered non-resident and was accepted with a Chancellor's Scholarship the next day. Wow, fast!

Visited Ann Arbor and loved it. I'm attending there barring some major reason to change my decision coming from Stanford... Which is possible, albeit unlikely.

So I got waitlisted at Stanford, which is nicer than rejection I think... especially since I'll withdraw as soon as possible from there as well. Michigan will be fun and worth it even if I could get into Stanford - free law school!

Came in the mail, regular mail. It's a big ol' envelope with a blue accordian folder inside. Presents from law schools are fun!

I worked at a camp in North Carolina near Asheville. Are you familiar with the area?

i know i should know this

but what does the H mean before each school name? ...you probably don't need my good luck wishes with your impressive record, numbers and WE , but you have them anyway!

little Hs
Thursday, August 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

It means that I hid my rankings of schools though I can still see them. Not too useful but I think the H is pretty funny so I keep it.

Thanks

Thanks for the wishes, its nice to say "I'm going to law school next year" as opposed to "I'm applying to law schools" Good luck on Stanford, I imagine we'll hear about the same time!!!

Congrats!

Thanks so much! I hope Michigan will get back to me soon, maybe we'll be classmates!

darrow...
Tuesday, September 20 2005 at 08:00 PM

heya.... not sure yet if i'll take the darrow - location is the main issue. i love U of M and ann arbor, but i'd prefer to be close to home (NYC) and to my long-term boyfriend (Boston and then DC) so my choice is complicated. :( But U of M is definitely in the running and the Darrow is really hard to turn down, so we'll see. will keep you posted!

congrats!

It's too bad Stanford's our only possible overlap, as we seem to have (some) similar interests. Best of luck with your decisions!

Withdrawing
Thursday, August 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

I do plan to make some decisions soon in terms of weeding out schools by withdrawing. It's a bit complicated with family considerations so I need to think a bit still, but I'll make sure to update when I do withdraw.

congrats!

wow, congratulations on the scholarship. i'm glad for my own sake that i'm not competing against you. you wouldn't happen to be someone i met when i was in madison for the democratizing education conference, would you?

Hey - congrats on your great acceptances, and especially the Darrow! For me it wasn't a difficult decision at all. I haven't visited yet (I'm going to the Preview thing on May 9-11; are you?), but the vast array of photos I've browsed leave me confident in the beauty of the campus and Ann Arbor. That has also been confirmed by every person I've talked to about the school. In fact, I've yet to hear anything but positive comments from people with experience at UM, and by now I can't even begin to count all the people I've talked to. I've also never really been one to care that much about rankings or whatever; I was adament about choosing the school that seems to offer the best quality of life, and, again, I'm totally confident that MLS does. Add the Darrow money (and prestige) to that and it's icing on an already sweet cake. I was already feeling pretty set on MLS even before Sarah called with the Darrow offer. If you wanna chat about this feel free to drop me a line - my AIM is ctmontecristo83. Good luck with your decision! GO BLUE!

i considered american. a friend of mine goes there and was encouraging me to apply. but i've already applied for 3 public interest scholarships and 11 law schools, and i've got a bit of application fatigue. they didn't offer a fee waiver, either.

congrats

congrats on the Darrow, I'd never heard of it before seeing your profile. email me if you'd like to compare notes--we're in the same town and have fairly similar apps.

The longer it goes w/o a decision, the more I'm worrying!

Congrats

On UNC finally figuring it out! Thanks for the congrats, I'm very happy so far, I wish Columbia and Chicago would let me know soon. I just fear that Stanford isn't going to happen, they just accepted someone who went complete 1-27, I just can't figure them out. Anyways, good luck!!!!

withdrawing
Thursday, August 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

I plan to once I've made some decisions. However, until it's time to go to waitlists, withdrawing doesn't help people.

I applied for that scholarship too- how did you find out you didn't get it? Thanks!

WCL Scholarship
Thursday, August 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

I got an email and a letter in the mail at my permanent address. I figure that they probably don't wait to tell people until they've done all the applications but rather inform along the way. Good luck!

Thanks

And congrats on your acceptances! Best of luck in LS :)

This week?
Monday, November 07 2005 at 07:00 PM

I really feel like Stanford should be getting to us like this week. Seriously, they know we have decisions to make soon!

UNC Chancellor's
Thursday, August 25 2005 at 08:00 PM

I did not go to the weekend because of work. There isn't really a way to get someone to cover my five classes. Anyway, I hear it was pretty amazing. Are you thinking it's the place for you? I'm visiting Michigan soon but don't think I'll make it to UNC. It's not looking like a good option since I couldn't claim residency.

Stanford
Monday, November 07 2005 at 07:00 PM

Hollered at me today, fingers crossed for you!!!!!

decision
Monday, November 07 2005 at 07:00 PM

Sorry about Stanford, I probably would've taken the Darrow anyway! As for a decision, I'm close. Yale is not getting back to me, but I find it hard to believe they are going to admit me after essentially deffering me this long. If they come through, I'll go there. If they don't, I'm probably 82% sure I'm going to attend Harvard. I visited and it was pretty neat.

Thanks!

Thanks for the insight on LSD and congrats on all your acceptances! Good luck at U Mich!
