Additional info & updates

I got my first acceptance today (12/8) to Creighton. Pretty pumped about that, even if it's not my first choice. My sister goes to school there and it's in my home state (if you consider Omaha part of Nebraska). My first choice is Texas, but you can see my numbers don't stack up very well there. Would like to move south (Houston, SMU), but staying in Kansas (KU) or going home (Nebraska or Creighton) would be ok. Pretty flexible.

12/20: Phone call from KU to offer acceptance. Admissions packet to follow.

1/9: Waitlisted at Wisconsin. Single-page letter in regular envelope.

1/12: Accepted by Nebraska. Good way to forget about the nightmare I had one night that I had been rejected there. Also offered $11,000, which will make expenses almost disappear because of my residency status.

1/26: Iowa has informed me I am in the "hold decision" category. Apparently this is like being waitlisted, but I don't have to wait for the first round of deposits to pass before I get a final decision. Small white envelope.

2/4: Deferred at SMU. Better than a ding I guess.

2/15: Welcome to Houston! Email from the admissions office, with a mailed packet to follow soon. Very pumped about this one.

3/24: KU doubles my scholarship offer to $10,000 per year. This eliminates Creighton and Nebraska and makes it a two-way battle between KU and Houston.

3/29: Houston comes back with a $3,000 scholarship AND resident tuition! My head is truly spinning now, and I'll have to make the toughest decision of my life between these two schools.

Despite the resident tuition and scholarship, it's still a little bit less expensive to go to KU (UH has really high resident tuition). We shall see...

4/25: I'm going to Houston. See y'all there.

Texas is my top choice (I finally added some additional info above). I doubt I'll be accepted but it's worth a shot. Where are you applying?

did they mention any money?

Did you get a password from Houston for their online status checker? Their website says it takes about two weeks to receive one after submitting an application.

have alot of soft factors? Texas may be a little more difficult just because of their in-state acceptance requirements. But there's nothing wrong with SMU or Houston. Did you get your apps submitted in time for EA's at these schools? (if they have EA, that is!) I went ahead and signed in so you could link to my lsn account. All my schools are listed there. Best of luck with the rest of your apps - and congrats on your acceptances so far! Jess

Thanks. I didn't expect to receive a decision from them until the new year. Congrats on your acceptance to KU, by the way. I'm hoping to get a phone call from them.

I didn't receive a complete notification. The first thing that I received from them was the acceptance packet.

Answer to K-Hater

I am from Aurora, a small town near Grand Island. No, I don't really feel like a traitor. I have loved every (well, almost every) minute of my time at K-State. This has been a great place to go to school. May spend the next three years in Lincoln, as you can tell by my latest acceptance. TB

when did send in your app.? And did they offer you 11K/year?

Congrats on Nebraska

Did you have any stellar soft factors, or was the UNL admit based on your (awesome) numbers? My numbers aren't great, but I think my soft factors are pretty good. Would be nice as heck to get 11k from them!! Whew, just thinking about it makes me flustery!

did I see a golf mention?

you played HS golf? My husband is the consumate golf freak. He only played one year of HS golf, mostly b/c he didn't like the coach much. We're from Eastern NE though. And no, I don't go to Creighton now. My UG is Bellevue, not so much prestige, but easy on the brokebutt nontrad paying her own way. ;) Congrats again.

Schools? I hope you hear on UT and SMU soon. Of course, It'd be nice to have you at UNL or Creighton too.

Nice to see a journalism major who actually has a good GPA. Good luck on your apps from a former Kansan.

I lived in Topeka for a couple years in the late 1980s. I still have a lot of family there. Yeah, I'd like to go to my undergrad institution but, um, yeah...I didn't go to class much my first couple years. I got a good job out of my newspaper experience though.

Good luck, fellow Kansan

I guess I will let the fact that you're a Wildcat slide and wish you good luck on the rest of your apps. We have a lot of apps in common so I might be seeing you around campus!

They sent me a regular size envelope with a letter dated 2/15. From what I have heard, the rejections and the acceptances come in the same envelope and generally on the same date (they must do it in waves). Pretty excited about Houston though (congrats to you too!). Not a bad school and I've loved living here for the past year. Let me know if you have any questions before you visit, my gf is actually a 1L there.

Where you there yesterday? there was a guy from Aurora that I wondered if was you. Hope you enjoyed your Houston visit!

So that was you!
Saturday, January 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I sw you there, with your purple-ish shirt. You have dark hair and a little bit of sideburn action going right? I took the tour with the guy who sat behind you during the student panel (the one with the gazillion questions) he drove me nuts. I was starving! I didn't take my folks (they live across country in DC) but I dragged my husband along. The best part of the day was Professor Work's mock class and finding out that grad students are still allowed to get student ticket rates. Whoo! So I hope you enjoy either KU or Houston. I'd go to Houston first, but then, I'm a Texas gal. Enjoy the heat and the golf down there!

KU Scholarship
Thursday, January 05 2006 at 07:00 PM

How did you get KU to double your scholarship? I've been offered $5,000 there and it's one of my top choices, but I get the impression that it's pretty tough to get residency for the second and third year, and I'm an out-of-stater ($$$).

do you if SMU is done sending out acceptances? I still have not heard since a deferral and it's fucking april

UH
Thursday, January 26 2006 at 07:00 PM

Way to go on that scholly from UH. They don't give out a lot of those. I'm still trying to decide between UH and SMU, going up to SMU next weekend. I guess we'll see what happens while I'm there!

Enjoy Houston!
Saturday, January 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I hope it's every bit as exciting to you as my choice to go with UNL has been for me. And especially enjoy all the great golf in the area!

SMU/UH
Thursday, January 26 2006 at 07:00 PM

Well, my trip to Dallas was a lot of fun and SMU is a very pretty campus. Still, it comes down to where I want to practice (Houston) and which is the more affordable option (UH). Which means that SMU has until June 1 to offer me more money, or I am UH bound!
