Extra Curricular Information

I've been working as a clerk at a large law firm in Houston since my graduation in May. I've also been involved in a few community service projects since then as well. I worked part-time (around 25 hours a week) throughout undergrad to finance my education which is partially responsibile for my low GPA. I transferred from Indiana University to the University of Kansas and switched majors from Music Education to Communications in the winter of 2002.

I received CRS fee waivers from Indiana, Illinois. Iowa and SMU (I've listed fee waivers only from schools that I am applying to).

My sister earned her JD at Iowa and my father earned his at Loyola-Chicago.

I had 3 letters of recommendation submitted on my behalf: one from a senior partner that I currently work for and assisted throughout a 3-week trial, another from a professor at the IU School of Music and another from a Communications professor at KU.

Additional info & updates

Here's how it broke down y'all:

2/15 -- Got my rejection from Texas. No surprise there. Still, just because you're expecting someone to punch you in the face doesn't make it hurt any less.

2/21 -- Got an email from Houston, they told me my formal acceptance was in the mail. At least I'm batting .500 now!

2/27 -- Waiting sucks.

3/1 -- Received my formal acceptance from Houston in the mail. Cool!

3/3 -- Got a call from Maggie at SMU, I'm in! Someone's partying this weekend. That someone is going to be me.

3/9 -- Threw an addendum Iowa's way and I must say, I couldn't be any more impressed with their admissions staff. Very helpful, prompt, and friendly.

3/14 -- Nothing in almost 2 weeks! I should have applied in November, I would probably already know where I'm going by now. Oh well, live and learn.

3/23 -- Got a letter from SMU today offering me a $7,500 renewable Dean's Scholarship. I'm not above being bought! ;)

4/1 -- Just got back into town from a business trip to find that both Colorado and Illinois waitlisted me. A nice way of saying no! I'll probably get my Vandy rejection any day now (although I'm wondering what's taking them so long?) IU emailed me and told me I wouldn't know until April 7. Iowa told me I wouldn't know until mid-April. Too bad SMU's deposit is due... right now!

4/7 -- True to their word, Indiana let me know something by April 7th. The letter basically said that had I applied earlier I would have been in. Oh well, I guess all hope is not lost, but 3 WL in a row is pretty much letting me know that this cycle is done for me.

4/25 -- Got both my Vandy rejection and my Iowa waitlist today. It's a mix of disappointment and relief. Wish I could have pulled a miracle and got into one of those schools, but at least I know where I stand now. Looks like it's going to come down to UH or SMU!

5/18 -- Well, I'm heading to U of H! Thanks to everyone that wished me luck along the way.

To any 2006-2007 splitters looking at my profile: The key takeaway from my experience is obvious: 1) Don't slack your way through UG if you want to get in to your top choice school (may be too late for that), and 2) Apply as soon as schools will let you and maybe you won't get stuck on as many waitlists as I did.

Good luck to everyone!

Looking bad @ UT

Looking at the graph of recent accepts/rejects at UT, I think I'm probably going to be on the outside looking in. I figured it was a longshot with my low GPA, there's only so much you can explain away. On the other hand, I still think that Vanderbilt is a possibility. They seem to have a little wider spread and they haven't rejected a bunch of people around my numbers as of yet.

good luck

Awesome school. Residency is definitely a factor, but it's selective no matter how you cut it. I will be pulling for you, buddy. And good luck with the rest of your apps as well.

thanks:)

I agree, waiting is getting old quickly. I think people balk at my/our GPA's. If you get a Vandy WL, will you wait it out? Congrats on Houston. Very legit school.

I didn't get anything... did you? Remember, fee waiver to USC counts and your UH acceptance packet counts.

Thanks for the well wishes, and I hope all of your schools are only taking thier time because they are trying to decide to give you either a tremendous amount of money, or an embaressing large amount of money. Best Wishes!

for the note on UIUC. It's a bummer...but I keep telling myself not to dwell! Any news on your end?

Waiting stinks!

I'm rooting for you! I hope you hear back from all your schools soon!

What's up herb? Thanks for the congrats. I am still waiting for a few of the pendings, but am expecting to be rejected by the ones I actually care about(BC, Minn, UPenn, Vandy). I can't understand your IU waitlist with that LSAT. Congrats on SMU though, thats a helluva school and with that money its a good deal. Anyhow, good luck with everything and hopefully things work out for the both of us.

Barring a financial aid disaster (i.e. lots of unsubsidized loans) it looks like I'll be at UH next fall. Looks like you're (still) waiting on a few schools, so what are you going to do about UH's May 1 deadline? Good luck. TB

if you really want SMU, i hope they raise your scholarship. on the other hand, it'd be kind of cool to have someone to carry on the Sunflower Showdown with at UH. keep me posted. TB
