Additional info & updates

Received a letter from UKy informing me that I have been granted a January 19th interview for the Bert Combs award

12-11-06 - received an email from Baylor informing me that I was accepted and also that I was being awarded the Dean's Academic Excellence Scholarship - half tuition

12-14-06 - received an email from Duke letting me know that all of my application had been received. I know b/c of my LSAT Duke is a wayyyy long shot. But what the heck, the chance to study there would be awesome.

12-18-06 - Received two letters from UK. The first was an 8 by 11 with my acceptence letter in it. The second was a standard envelope that said I would be awarded a "three-year academic merit Provost's Fellowship." Basically what this does is reduce my tuition to in-state fees. Which is nothing to complain about

01-22-07 - While waiting in the Louisville airport returning from my visit and interview at UK my wife called to read me a letter from Minnesota. Deferred. Which actually isn't too bad...I just hope that their final decisiondoesn't get dragged out til July.
As for my visit to Kentucky...it went great. I think the interview went fine...more of a get-to-know-you type discussion. I enjoyed the classroom experience and the student body and faculity that I met. I guess it won't be until march before they let me know one way or the other about Bert Combs

01-24-07 - Came home from class today to find a letter from the University of Wisconsin...accepted. This is big news for me because it is my first tier-one acceptence and I school that I feel I could really excel at. No word on any amount of extra money, which of course could be the difference maker. Overall though, I'm very excited.

01-25-07 - Opened up my email today to see that I have been accepted to...Indiana University - Bloomington. More information to come in the mail.

02-13-07 - In a UConn. Letter. Normal Size.

02-28-07 - It is funny, this morning I was telling my wife that I thought I might have heard about all of my schools by the end of February. We both decided that it was probably wishful thinking, and then...after leaving one of my history classes I was talking to a couple of my peers about our respective papers when my phone viberated. I didn't recognize the number so I answered it...it was from Minnesota...I'm in!! Ever since I decided to go to law school Minnesota was the school that I told everyone I wanted to go to. Now I'm in.

03-10-07 - First rejection, probably won't be the last. In truth I'm not that troubled. I'm in at Minnesota

03-17-07 - Today I received a letter from UK informing me that I will not be getting the bert combs. Their decision only makes mine easier, I'll be withdrawning my acceptence tonight. It was fun to visit the campus, but it's just too far from family and friends for my wife and I. For those who are going to be in Lexington this fall. Good luck and enjoy the Kentucky outdoors.

03-24-07 - It's been a while since I have heard from anyone and so just to get a letter today was great. I have been put on the waitlist at Washington and Lee. The letter was very nice and came in a standard envelope. This is ok news because the U of M is looking better everyday. Today they sent me a key chain and a mug.

03-30-07 - Only one school left to hear from. Today I was waitlisted at William and Mary. Not a really big surprise. After receiving the letter I gave them a call because I was still interested. Even though my chances are slim I will be visiting the campus in April. Might as well see what it is that I might miss out on. In other news I had dinner with some representatives from the University of Minnesota last night. It was awesome. I will be really surprised if I don't end up at Minnesota.

04-09-07 - Rejected at Duke. This was my very long shot. Even before the letter came I was trying to decide if I would attend if accepted. It was up in the air and so needless to say I am not hurt.

04-11,12,13-07 - Visited Minnesota and loved it. Paid the deposit and put money down on an apartment. Having my wife excited about the U of M was the most important thing to me. I think this trip made the difference for her. The school is awesome.

04-13-07 - Attended the U of Wisc. ASW. Really felt like the school was not the place for me. Beautiful campus and building but it just didn't fit...for me.

04-16-07 - Visited William and Mary. Beautiful campus, great tour, nice interview with Dean Wilcox. Still, I'm planning on sending a withdrawl.

04-18-07 - Visit UCONN. Beautiful campus. Still very interested in their LLM in Insurance law, but didn't feel it was the right place for me. Will be sending a withdrawl when I get home.

04-19-07 - Not related to law school at all but I thought I would mention that my wife and I and our friend attended the Yankee's game in New York and saw A-Rod blast a homer to win the game in the bottom of the 9th.

04-23-07 - Asked to have my name removed from the waitlist at Washington and Lee. No point in having them continue to deliberate over my application if I have no intention on attending.

04-23-07 - Withdrew from William and Mary's waitlist. Not only did I need to make a decision sooner then they were making theirs, but I know that Minnesota is a better fit for me.

04-23-07 - Withdrew from Connecticut, my last school left to withdraw from. I liked Connecticut but it is too much of a regional school. Plus Hartford, at least the Hartford around the school, is kind of a dump. Not the type of place I want my family to be while I'm at school. I am still really interested in their LLM in Insurance law so we might end up there in the future. For now, Minnesota is clearly the place for me.

08-07-07 - Wow it has been a while since I've updated anything on here. I was cleaning out my old email account and found an email from lawschoolnumbers reminding me to update before the school year starts. I'm excited to announce that I will be attending the U of M. I have been living here in Minnesota with my wife for the past 3 months and we are loving it, (of course school hasn't started). Of the student body that I have met Minnesota seems second to none. I'm excited for school to begin.

I got the acceptance package in the mail last week. Congrats on Baylor!

That is some great news! It's good to know that law school can be cheap. Is UConn still number one?

LSAT

Did you hear about the LSAT takers in the midwest. There was a ton of closed test sites so they took it on another test and took the Feb exam. They got one great break if they took the Feb test as a practice test before they took it as there actual test.

That testing messup doesn't seem to be very fair. Hopefully it doesn't affect us. UConn is still up there, but to be honest I don't have a number one. Maybe I should think about that...but ultimately I feel that if I keep myself detached I won't get hurt. I sissy like that

Did you receive information for the Bert Combs interview before you received your acceptance letter?

Interview
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

Drop me a line at my e-mail address and I'll give you my phone number. When are you coming in Thursday? If you are going to be in town for a couple days, I could give you a quick tour of the area. Hit me up.

off topic
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I really didn't check the clock, but I'm assuming it took the "standard" 30 minutes or so. We did get a little off topic, but I tried to keep it focused to the best of my ability. My interview was with Dean Bakert and Prof. Aussen (spelling). And yes, they let me know I had been accepted at the end of the interview (when I got home I found the letter in the box). I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Nothing yet

Congrats Tom! I sent in my app a long time ago, but just got an e-mail today saying I was complete. As soon as I hear something I'm planning on going up there to check the place out, and I will surely give you a call to let you know how it is. Keep up the good work man!

Not sure
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I don't know exactly what happened. I tried to log on last night and I could not get on. It said something about a problem with the server.....I'm not exactly sure. Then when I got on today, everything was gone. I changed my password just in case someone was on my account, but other than that I don't know what could have happened.

Hey, I am thinking about Kentucky as well. Actually three of the schools you got into: Bloomington, Wisconsin, and Kentucky are in my top 6 right now if I get into them. I was accepted to Kentucky and planning to visit as well. Any suggestions? On my ap it said they would identify me by march for scholarships. Do you know if that is for scholarships you are automatically considered for when applying? Anyways, good luck with the rest of your aps and congrats on your acceptances!

Indiana
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

Hey buddy. Just got in at Indiana. I think I'm going to check it out in a couple weeks and will let you know how it is.

Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

A surprise? Like a stripper in a cake surprise or five buck in your birthday card surprise? Hmm.......now I'm anxious , haha.

Indiana
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

So now that I've got this package, I got a car sticker. What did you get? If you say a scholarship, I'm flying to Idaho to kick some mormon...........just kidding. But really, I got a sticker, info on the city/school, and a nice letter. I guess a lot of people got scholarships, and I wasn't one of them. Ouch.

Sticker
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

Yes, I was definitely happy to get the sticker. You know you can send your fafsa to more than 6 schools. If you need to know how to perform such a magic trick, just give me a ring and I'll divulge the secret. As for the UK scholarships, I think the interviews are wrapping up over the next week. I believe Dean Bakert said the notifications would be in early March (don't quote me on that). Deferred means that the committee needs more time to review your file and then they will get back to you with a decision (accept, reject, or waitlist). A waitlist, on the other hand, means that the committe has reviewed your file and they will get back with you if they can't seem to fill their seats with the initial applications they have already sent (it should most often be viewed as a rejection). So you got deferred at Minnesota? I think I got WListed. When I get home I'm going to double check to make sure. So who is in your "top 6"? Not Indiana? I've heard great things about them. Right now I'm trying to sweet talk Lori into considering the move....... Keep me updated. So who is in your "top 6"?

The second "So who is in your "top 6"?" was a typo.

UMN
Thursday, November 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

All I can say is congrats on MN and I am SOOO Jealous. Did you do anything special after the deferal to get in? Were you expecting to get in at MN? CONGRATULATIONS! Thanks!

Awesome
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

Yeah Tom!!!!!!! Congrats on Minnesota. Great school. Besides Duke, that is your #1 right? I am very happy for you. They really have a great program. I'm pretty optimistic about getting accepted, but I don't know if Lori would jump on board to moving there. I guess we'll just have to see. GREAT JOB !

Fellowship
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I don't know if it will take me out of the running or not, but I seriously doubt they would award the Combs/Ashland to someone who just got a fellowship with a 12K stipend. They told me they are going to reevaluate my scholarship after the Combs/Ashland is awarded. So if the fellowship takes me out of the running, then at least I've got a backup. I'm really trying to incur as little debt as possible and if I can do that at UK, then I'll be there in a heartbeat. I really like the city, and love the fact I wouldn't have to sell my house. Enough about me.......what's up with Minn! Congrats man! Did you send a letter of continued interest to them? That is a GREAT school that everyone seems to really enjoy. How is your "top 6" looking?

UTK
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I think I will be able to land a scholarship but I'm not sure how much. They have not been moving too fast in the scholarship dept., but their seat deposit isn't due until June so that may be the reason. I'm not sure how residency works in TN, but if I can land in-state tuition after the first year and don't get any money then it will cost about 23K more (not including moving expenses). Without in-state then it would be more like 54K more expensive. I'm still up in the air with the decision.

UK
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

Yea, my W probably won't be far behind. I was pretty let down about the Combs/Ashland deal. I figured we had a pretty good shot, but I'm sure they are going to try and give it to the "top" candidate, someone who really blows away their numbers. What's really ironic is that person probably won't end up attending either (due to better offers elsewhere). I'm driving down today to look at UTK's campus and I have an interview with Vandy tomorrow. I'll keep you updated.

W&M
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I got a letter from them today. It was dated and postmarked March 26th. If they sent yours out in the same batch, you should be hearing pretty soon. Good luck and thanks for the congrats on UT. PS. I noticed you got the ole' WL from W&L also. Dissapointed? If I hadn't already decided on UT, I probably would have cared a little more.

Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

Haha, we really are following suit, but really.....who cares, you are in a MN. That school is AWESOME. You will really be happy that you were able to attend (if you end up going). Too bad we won't be ending up in the same place. I bet we would really have a lot of fun.

Not sure if you ever come on here anymor
Monday, July 23 2007 at 08:00 PM

but I was wondering if MN offered you any money.
