Additional info & updates

My GPA at Cal was a 3.27, not great, but still not sure how LSDAS managed to reduce it to 3.19. I thought they took out my study abroad grades, but after further investigation it appears not to be the case. Anyway, I realize I have a LOW GPA, but I'm ready to kick butt in law school now. How to communicate that to schools is the question.

I wrote my PS about the summer I spent in Paraguay, which includes me being assaulted and stabbed while there. So it ties in my language and cultural interests AND an event that I had to overcome and that led to some personal development. I didn't want to write the shock/sympathy essay but genuinely wanted to relate how the incident helped me become a more focused and motivated person. I had several reviewers and hope the final product struck the right tone. I have 3 LORs, two from superiors at my non-profit job (been here more then 3 years) and one from a professor in the Spanish dept. at Berkeley. Unfortunately my academic rec came last and may have arrived at serveral schools too late to be considered. It also will not be sent to Hastings as they have a 2 letter max. Bummer I didn't have a better understanding of the LOR service, or I would have made sure Hastings got one professional and one academic letter. I really hope this doesn't affect my chances. Also, I've found two typos in my PS since sending it. One is just a wrong word, I think its an "of" where there should be an "in". The other is using "affect" where it should be "effect". I hope they both aren't noticed.

I've received "complete" notifications via e-mail for USF, Hastings, Berkeley, NYU, Loyola. Georgetown status check shows complete. I've had no communication from UCLA. Why can't all these schools have status checks?

2/1 Manila envelope from USF - merit scholarship offer of 15K. Not my first choice, but I'm not turning it down yet!

2/11 Online status at Loyola went to decision.

2/17 Still waiting for letter from Loyola.

2/17 Loyola acceptance came today with a single page letter in a small envelope, no scholarship info.

3/3 Sent an e-mail to Hastings begging for acceptance, or rather expressing my continued interest in attending Hastings and explaining my low GPA.

3/4 Georgetown app went to decision today, will wait across the country for the letter! Not holding my breath, but am hopeful!

3/7 Called UCLA, Boalt, NYU and am still "under review" at all of them. So frustrating!

3/8 Sent e-mail to Boalt pleading for admission. Worth a try.
Got my GULC rejection today. Bummer.

3/10 UCLA ding while I was on vacation. Sucks.

3/15 2 weeks until my first seat deposit is due and freaking out!

3/17 Duh - I checked the dates on my letter and my seat deposit for USF isn't due until April 15th. I'm retatded, but that means I have almost a WHOLE MONTH to hear from my last 3 schools and make a decision. Woo hoo!

Rejected from NYU today. I knew it would happen but all this rejection is sucking really hard.

3/21 Still not at "decision" at Hastings yet, but I'm going to visit a class and do the tour tomorrow. I really, really, really hope I get in.

I expect Boalt will reject me sometime next week but I admit they've given me jsut the slightest little bit of hope. Of course, if accepted, I'd have the lowest index score of any accepted Boalt applicant on LSN. That would make me very proud.

3/22 Called Boalt and my letter is going out this week. I smell a rejection in the air. Damn it.

Visited Hastings today and am excited to go there. I hope I get in!

My status date at Hastings changed to 3/22 but my status satyed at complete!!! This is so frustrating.

3/24 Nuttin, this sucks! I'm visiting USF on the 5th, but I wish I knew about Hastings. :-(

3/28 Still no news - no change in status at Hastings. I'm going crazy here!

Called Boalt and they told me it was a rejection over the phone. Damn it. This process sucks and I feel like I wasted money applying to all these reaches. I thought at least one would come through. Now I'm jsut praying for Hastings. And I'm not even religious.

4/11 Still no word from Hastings. I'm getting my $350 ready for Friday's seat deposit at USF.

4/13 Still nuttin'.

4/14 Made a deposit at USF. Expect Hastings decision soon, since I've layed down money at other school!

4/18 Finally a decision from Hastings. If its an acceptance it'll be too late to get my $350 back from USF, and if not, then USF here I come!

4/19 Nothing from Hastings yet.

4/20 Waitlisted, bummer.

6/1 Nothing yet from Hastings, anyone have any news?

FINALLY, in at Hastings on 6/16!!!

School Choices

First, I wasn't as smart as I could have been about applying. I really thought my LSAT would make up for a low GPA. Also I didn't realize my GPA would be reduced by LSDAS report. Second, I only applied places I would consider going. I don't want to move to a rural location (Davis) or a state I don't want to live in (Texas). My top 5 are the schools I still haven't heard from and the other two are my safeties. If I don't get into one of my top 5 I might just not go, I haven't decided yet.

I'm in the same boat...
Thursday, September 01 2005 at 08:00 PM

hey, Im in the exact (almost) same boat as you except I got my ding from Boalt pretty early. I'm now just freaking waiting on Hastings and then I have to decide whether to go there or USF. Have you decided which you would choose and why?

Hastings decision
Saturday, August 20 2005 at 08:00 PM

When did your status change to "decision"? Mine changed on 4/2 and today it is 4/20 and still no decision letter. I called them and they keep telling me to wait. However, today, I told them it's ridiculous that I have not yet received a letter and I live only 20 minutes from the school and I know people who live farther away who have received their letters sooner! I hate waiting!

Waitlist at Hastings
Friday, July 29 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hey Ambs. Can you e-mail me? I'd like to get into contact with you because you seem to be in a very similiar situation to me. I also just got waitlisted at Hastings, and pretty much don't have any other options except for USF and Santa Clara where I've already gotten in. I'd like to ask you how you're planning on figuring out enrolling at USF if Hastings can take up till August.

PS typos

Okay, so I actually read your entire Additional Information today (instead of the usually skimming) and I'm completely embarassed to admitt that I too had two typos on my PS. I WISH mine were as minor as yours . . . I completely left out a word, meaning the sentence makes no sense and has to be read at least twice (bummer) AND I randomly added an "I" where it definately shouldn't be. I was so mortified when I found them - it's somewhat consoling to see I wasn't the only one. Misery loves company, right? Oh, and I've seen your comments on LSD - I'm glad you're excited about USF and I wish you the best of luck on the Hasting's waitlist!

sorority?
