Extra Curricular Information

Worked part-time all through college.

This process is demoralizing. I have average numbers and I'll go to an average, overpriced school where I will do averagely.

I wish I had this guy's numbers, although anyone who refers to himself as "triumph2006" has got to be a prick: http://lawschoolnumbers.com/display.php?user=triumph2006

Additional info & updates

*The scholarship amounts are per year and renewable.

Did M.A. in a foreign country.

Santa Clara, Berkeley, Davis, and UCLA are taking FOREVER! I applied to everything around Christmas time and heard back quickly from Cal Western, Hastings and San Diego, which was friggin' fantastic! I have not ruled out any schools yet and the decision will be based on $$, even if it means going to a lower ranked school.

Boalt Hall is breaking my heart by putting me off until later this month! Can anyone tell me if this is a good or bad thing?

3/6/06 Received acceptance from Loyola. Their beautifully organized folder is the nicest so far. Too bad it was folded in half to fit in my mailbox :-(

3/7/06 I called Santa Clara to ask about my application and the sweet woman on the phone said that the review might not be completed until the end of April. WHUH?!?!? What have I done to offend NorCal (UCB, SC, UCD)?

3/9/06 I wish my family would have told me about the fee waivers earlier.

3/12/06 Growing bitter towards Santa Clara. My numbers are on the high side for that school and I haven't heard a peep from them.

3/14/06 Hmmm...that full scholarship from Cal-Western is looking mighty fine right about now. No debt, no worries, no job? Last night I dreamt all night about receiving law school letters in the mail. I don't think they were good letters.

The Davis status-checker is a tease. It's only updated once every 3 or 4 days so I am constantly checking it. Finally comes that exciting moment when I see that there has been an update and alas! Nothing new in regard to my file.

In the time since I submitted my applications, I have read the entire Jane Austen collection. Sad.

Catholic U. has not offered 1cent of financial aid. Maybe because I'm a Jew? The Jesuits at USD don't seem to mind.

3/15/06 Woohoo! I'm not the last one on Berkeley's deferred list anymore!

3/16/06 DAVISSSSSS!!!!!! via online status check. No mention of $$$.

EARTH TO SANTA CLARA...I WILL ATTEND IF YOU LET ME IN AND GIVE ME SOME DOUGH

3/16/06 Ignore what I said about Catholic. They have offered an $18,000 scholarship. Said that the letter was posted over a week ago. I wonder what else has been lost in the mail. I love Catholics!

3/17/06 Why Davis is on my bad side: not only did it take a century for them to come up with an answer, I also cannot get into the "admitted students" site. I don't think they actually want me there.

3/20/06 Just 2 more days until my fate is decided by Berkeley. The tension is killing!

3/21/06 "No, no, no, no, don't funk with my heart...."

3/22/06 So far, it looks like only one person has made it off of the deferral list: http://lawschoolnumbers.com/display.php?user=mangogirl12

3/23/06 All I have to say in response to adam598's information posted below is, "Those bitches!" Do you enjoy inflicting pain, Boalt, do you? Put away those bongs and get a move-on!

3/24/06 Called Boalt and got my ding. I'll be sending my kids to Stanford, thank you very much. Suddenly, I'm not so interested in going to law school.

3/25/06 Am pretty sure I will withdraw from CalWestern. I don't mind that it is tier 4, but I do mind the GPA requirements on my scholarship in light of the attrition rate and curve. Too much risk is involved. If Santa Clara doesn't pony up some cash, then the choice will come down to San Diego and George Mason. I prefer GMU, but it is a continent away from my family (I haven't seen them in 2 yrs as it is) and I'm not so wild about the East coast. Decisions, decisions....

Random question: why do people set up accounts on LSN and input their personal information, but not list a single school?

4/3/06 Oops, I just noticed that McGeorge required notification of intent to enroll by April 1st or the scholarship would be lost. Drat, although I bet they are forcing many people to turn them down because of this early deadline.

4/4/06 cool, 1,000 people have viewed my page :-)

4/6/06 In at Santa Clara. Is it irrational to prefer Santa Clara over San Diego?

4/8/06 I was looking at the information that Davis sent and it includes an ethnic breakdown of the university. It had about 10 different categories for Asians, 3 for Hispanics, only one for "caucasians" and one for African-American/Black (so whether you are from Somalia or Oakland, it makes no difference). I find it interesting that Davis cares so much in making sure we understand that there is an ethnic difference between Chicanos, Latinos and Hispanics, but doesn't blink twice about forcing Arabs, Jews and every other slightly lighter-skinned group into the "caucasian/white" or the forgetable "other" category. I check "decline to state" whenever possible.

4/9/06 Boalt was too cheap to splurge on the $0.84 it takes to send a rejection letter overseas and sent it to my parents' house instead. Does my family really need to know that I didn't get in somewhere? NO!

4/12/06 Experiencing serious anxiety over returning to America (this is NOT an anti-America rant). For 2 years I've felt completely safe and never worried about my personal safety. The idea of going back to a place where shootings, rapes, murders and assaults of all types are daily news even in smaller towns, is making me very nervous. I've been a little too close to a few shootings and there was a serial rapist in my neighborhood, and I never realized before just how much looking over my shoulder was a part of life.

4/15/06 Dooood, I just got a letter from Santa Clara saying that my scholarship is not renewable unless I place in the top 10-15% of the class. WTF? Every other school that has offered money has only required to place in the top 25%. I can't project how well I will do in law school because I've never been there. It is a riskier choice than CalWestern (which gave me a deposit extension, btw). Bummer, I really would have liked to attend SCU.

4/17/06 Another deadline missed: Hastings. Oh, well. Every Hastings student I ever encountered looked haggard and cross. I'm still debating between USD and GMU and SCU (if SCU comes up with more $).

4/18/06 I got an email from SCU saying they will not increase the scholarship. I guess I'm back to the USD/GMU conundrum.

4/19/06 Waitlisted!

4/23/06 Received letter from Hastings dated April 3rd (!) offering $.

4/28/06 (sigh), I feel so poor. Santa Clara, thy name is STINGY.

5/7/06 I had some weird dealings with Santa Clara 2 days ago. I received an increased scholarship award letter which was enough to tip my choice in their favor and I wanted to send in a deposit. The problem is, I had let the deposit deadline pass because I had been told by them that the scholarship would NOT be increased. So I called them and emailed them and they told me they could not reserve a seat for me, but they would place me on a preferred waitlist. Oy. My fingers are crossed!

5/8/06 Well, I've decided that family togetherness and sunshine are over-rated and so I will go to GMU unless Santa Clara lets me off the hook. USD makes more sense, but I just get a good feeling from GMU....what can I say?

5/15/06 Santa Clara rubs salt in the wound by sending my yet another letter telling me of the new finaid award.

Also, received a book about the historical George Mason and a book light from GMU. It's a nice touch.

5/27/06 I'm sending in the deposit to GMU tomorrow. Unless UCLA or SCU let me off the waitlist, I will be on the East coast for the first time in my life. I'm very worried about the costs of the first year before I attain residency. If anybody knows of a decent one bedroom apartment for rent in or around the Arlington area, please let me know. Thanks.

5/29/06 Well, that didn't take long. This morning I totally flipped out thinking I had made the wrong decision or that maybe law school itself was the wrong choice. Perhaps I'm too old to begin another 3 years of schooling (27). I think my boyfriend is more excited about me going to law school than I am.

5/31/06 Dear Mr. David Waldham, please take note of the "A" next to George Mason. I'm going to DC, baby!

6/6/06 Readmitted to Santa Clara with the same crappy scholarship. Rude email from them. What should I do? California beckons...

6/12/06 Following their consistent pattern of behavior, Santa Clara has not responded to my queries and I am stuck moving to the nasty, smelly and cold East coast.

6/19/06 I'm getting married!

7/5/06 Starting to hate DC. Finding housing is impossible from afar. CNN said the weather there today was 96 degrees with chance of thunderstorms. eeew! I am a total moron for leaving California.

7/20/06 Life is pretty interesting here in Israel right now. I feel terrible leaving at this time. All of my prior concerns suddenly seem very petty. Let's hope Israel takes care of this business once and for all. I'm outta here. Yalla Bye!

I applied to schools based on location, knowing that I either want to stay in Texas or move to San Diego. Congrats on the scholarship to USD, I'm still waiting to hear.

Waitlist vs. Defer
Friday, March 03 2006 at 07:00 PM

Hi, Berkeley has both "waitlisted" and "deferred" applicants. Does anybody know what the difference is?

good to know
Friday, March 03 2006 at 07:00 PM

Hey, thanks for the explanation :-)

deferral
Tuesday, September 27 2005 at 08:00 PM

good luck on ucb. they don't defer too many people so it's probably not a delayed rejection a la penn. and that usd money looks sweeet!

Why they did that to ya'll I have no idea. Oh I am a tribes member so I don't know if you were a bit put off by my previous posting of love for jew-fros. I guess I have a half a jew fro even tho I am all the way jewish..lol...better not say that too loud or else the AA haters may use it as another reason I got in to school. Take care and best of luck to you my sista!

Ma Pitom?! I'm down with the jew fro. I have to be because mine is OUT OF CONTROL! i'll have to learn to tame it for OCI. Perhaps we'll meet at SC or Hastings and we can compare fros. Congrats on Hastings!

Cal West
Saturday, December 10 2005 at 07:00 PM

hey, I'm feeling the same indecision about Cal West myself. I'm in SPain so can't visit and my Mom hasn't sent me a copy of the scholarship offer yet, so I wasn't even aware of the conditions. I am still waiting to hear back from the majority of the schools I applied to. It's pretty much driving me insane. I've talked to a few Cal Western people though and they all really like it. Most are interested in criminal or IP aw. I'm so enticed by the thought of no debt. However, I don't love the idea of extr pressure to be in the top twenty-five. But then again, I like to think of myslef as a can do person and may be the extra incentive will actually help. I'm okay with the transfer thing. Once at a school I want to stay and make the most of what that particular school has to offer. Let me know how your decision making goes !San Diego would be a grand place to end up!

lol Sorry for the revitalized agony I induced...don't reckon I'll be able to sleep tonight either now...perhaps a good thing as I have a 15 page paper due tomorrow...what country you in...down under...? GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Think positive, love!! We've still got a shot at Berkeley!! We just need to persevere for a few more days!! x x

Saturday, December 10 2005 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the congrats! i am rooting for you with boalt. didn't someone once say good things come to those who wait! (obviously a person who had never experienced the pure agony of applying to law school) good luck!

Hastings...?

Ach! You're not going to UOP anyway...are you not considering Hastings...? Better ranked than USD...I visited the campus, and it's under construction now and while we'd be 1Ls, but looks nice otherwise...? x x

Hastings Chipsss
Wednesday, March 08 2006 at 07:00 PM

lol Yeah, I suppose that may be true about Hastings students having chips on their shoulders...must see that in every big city with multiple law schools tho...location and safety were alright...its right off the Bay Bridge by the Civic Center...plenty of weirdos wandering around, but thats SF for ya...

USD
Thursday, February 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

Yea, USD would be great. San Diego must be the finest city in the country. Are you going to visit? It is so freakin hard to choose where to go. I'm not really a rankings whore, so my decision comes down to where I want to live and cost of attendance. I have a huge social network in Atlanta and my family is here, but I would also like to go somewhere else for a while. Problem is USD is more of a regional school, so what would happen after law school is unknown...

ucla...2 weeks...?
Wednesday, March 08 2006 at 07:00 PM

no, is that what they told you...? i called them and they just said that I'd receive the official packet in a couple of days...the woman seemed super annoyed and got me off the phone right quick...

UCLA
Friday, March 03 2006 at 07:00 PM

if you are getting an official packet, then why do you have ucla "waitlisted"? if i have to wait 2 weeks this will probably end up as another disappointment a la boalt.

glad
Sunday, March 12 2006 at 07:00 PM

to know that the chronicaling of my daily agonies it at least a good read! ;-) I too have wondered why someone would go to the lenghts of inputting their personal info and not list any school. Also, I am glad to hear of your new found enthusiasm toward Catholics. I will write to you again soon. Good luck with your decision process ...it seems you have some nice choices.

well...i called and she told me i had been placed on the waitlist, and that i would receive my 'official packet' in a few days...she didnt say anything about two weeks...dunno if thats good or bad...:/

hey :)
Monday, March 13 2006 at 07:00 PM

yea, ill probably see ya there. You should have branched out a little more with the schools, you definitely could have pulled some top 20s with either gwu or possibly georgetown in the DC area. Im still praying I get off a waitlist of two. I think you will get into UCLA and then i doubt ill see ya, lol. i put my email and my screen name is this name if you ever wanna bs about gmu. I like the name, I use to have a jewfro back in the day.

thanks ray
Friday, March 03 2006 at 07:00 PM

you're right, davis makes the most sense. unfortunately, they haven't offered any scholarships. i'm still waiting...

Great numbers

Most of my friends are in Arlington now and craigslist seems to have a monopoly on housing ads and roomate connections. It's what I'll be using. Just look under the DC-craigslist

DC Housing
Tuesday, January 31 2006 at 07:00 PM

Aww!! Don't be so harsh with DC! Some advice to finding affordable housing is to get an apartment in the suburbs of MD or VA and commute. Check out Alexandria, Silver Spring, Bethesda, etc. Also, try to find a roommate! But the weather here is a little harsh right now...you'll get used to it though.
