Additional info & updates

*Scholarships are times 3, because it looks cooler.

Not sure if I've applied to enough T1 schools. Or if it's worth it for someone who wants to be a public defender.

12/11/10 - Acceptance letters from John Marshall and Drake, both with half tuition. I love Drake for some reason I can't quite put my finger on.

12/14/10- Hostra status checker updated to accepted, my first one from a ranked school. Much depends on whether or not I'm offered a scholarship. Anyone have any insights on that?

12/17/10 - Rejected at UIUC, and In Review at Nebraska finally. UIUC was a longshot but it still stings. And now my highest-ranked remaining school is 56. I wonder if I should add one or two more in the 40-range.

12/20/10 - I added applications to South Texas and Valparaiso, to add options in Texas and Indiana should I need to go to those states. I can only go to schools in areas where my wife can also transfer.

12/22/10 - In review at Southwestern. Only interesting in that this is the first I've heard anything from ANY California school, including lowly La Verne. They're slow to respond out here.

12/23/10 - Accepted at U of New Hampshire via email from the dean. No word on a scholarship. I need to research the Daniel Webster scholars program.

12/27/10 - Scholarship letters from New Hampshire and Hofstra. 5k per year from Hofstra is disappointing.

1/4/11 - Rejected at Chicago-Kent via online status check, as the state of Illinois continues it's hate-on for me. Edit - a full day. Deferred at Nebraska, in review at Valparaiso and La Verne. And accepted at Southwestern via online status check! Woot.

1/5/11 - "Decision Rendered" at McGeorge. Letter on the way. No change in the status checker with respect to tuition deposits or transcript receipts. Good? Bad? Am I overthinking it? Probably. But it's a ranked school and my ego needs an acceptance here.

1/6/11 - acceptance packet from Southwestern does NOT include scholarship award info. Apparently they have a separate interview and review process for admitted students to receive awards. Invitations to be sent out "soon".

1/8/11 - Accepted at McGeorge, scholarship plus books! Nice personalized note from the dean about the federal defender program.

1/19/11 - Accepted at Cal Western. It came in a grease-stained, water damaged envelope with just one document. I thought for certain that I had been rejected so hard that someone had wiped their ass with my rejection letter before sending it to me. But, nope. Accepted. Scholarship info to follow "soon".

1/21/11 - Accepted at La Verne. Nice scholarship there.
Edit - busy day. Accepted at Western via phone call. Yay. Waitlisted at Denver. Damn.

1/25/11 - accepted at nyls "with scholarship" via online status check.

1/28/11 - Accepted at Valparaiso via online status check. Too cool.

2/1/11 - NO money at Valparaiso. Terribly disappointed.

2/2/11 - phone call from Gonzaga asking if I'd have time to meet with Dean Critchlow while he's in town. Meeting set for next Friday.

2/5/11 - status at Gonzaga updated to "decision made." So... was saying "yes" to the meeting the test? He wouldn't bother meeting someone they'd rejected, would he?

2/11/11 - in at Gonzaga, met with dean at a coffee shop today. Nice scholarship. Also in at Albany via online status check.

2/14/11 - scholarship info from Albany arrived. Also as of now, in review at UCI, san Diego, and loyola for 3 months! And UNLV for two months.

2/22/11- accepted at South Texas. The news came on the same day that my wife was rejected by Texas a&m, so I won't be attending.

2/23/11- accepted off the waitlist at Nebraska via telephone call. Nice way to start the day.

3/2/11 - withdrew from Gonzaga because there's no way to make it work. Withdrew from Southwestern because $190k is just too much money to pay a T3 school. I wish they had offered a scholarship. No scholarship offer from UNL, but they're cheaper than most schools anyway, even for non residents.

3/4/11 - accepted at chapman via status check. I have been growing increasingly irritated with them, but it didn't stop me from having a schoolgirl squee when I saw the decision. Now I hate them even more!

3/6/11 - withdrew from South Texas and John Marshall. Neither one is possible, but I'm kinda sad about Texas.

3/7/11 - Campbell threw an extra $1000 per year my way, which is nice. They also take their prospective students out to a Carolina Hurricanes game, which is awesome. Climbing the ranks, Campbell.

3/9/11- decision rendered at Loyola. Letter is on its way...

3/12/11- waitlisted at loyola. I thought it would bother me, but I never expected to get in there. Being placed on their waitlist actually feels like a victory. I am an empowered loser!

3/15/11- accepted at Indy via email. Loser pOwer engage!

3/16/11- rejected at UNLV. Unlike loyola, which should have bothered me but didn't, this one shouldn't bother me but does. I literally COULDN'T attend this school, but I still got annoyed when they said no. Ehhh. Fuck em.

3/23/11- waitlisted at Brooklyn. Not too shabby, but waaaay too little too late for me to keep them on my radar. Withdrawn...

3/25/11 - rejected at UC Irvine. A brief letter containing a vague reference to doing a year of law school somewhere else and then trying again. Basically, get your shit together and then we'll talk. I consoled myself by telling myself that they're not even a law school. Also....
.
.
Withdrew from a crapton of schools. With just one left to hear from, and that one not a real option for me due to the cost, I'm down to those 7 schools. I submitted my 1st seat deposit to Nebraska today.

4/4/11- waitlisted at san Diego, the last holdout. I've withdrawn from everywhere but Nebraska and Elon, which gave me a full ride. In one week I'll make a decision.

4/12/11- well, decision's on hold for a bit. IU Indy threw a wrench into the machine with a last-minute $99k scholarship. I'm speechless, but I had already started loving Nebraska. I sent deposit in to Indy to hold my spot (and my money!) while I work through this...

4/22/11- done! It's Nebraska. Indy just doesn't work. Too much of a commute, and the cost difference doesn't justify it. Went out and bought a Husker hat.

Holy crap, I'm moving to Nebraska...?!

Congrats on McGeorge. Don't worry about the missing info on the status checker. Mine was the same. Everything including scholarship info is in the acceptance packet. Good luck on the rest.

Whittier Question
Sunday, November 28 2010 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the congrats on UNLV. With respect to Whitier, I applied to schools based on three residential options that I have. One of these is living with some family in Newport. I don't want to commute to LA so Chapman, Irvine and Whittier were the natural alternatives.

Congrats!

Congrats on Southwestern! Did you apply to the SCALE program? Also, if you don't mind me asking, are you receiving any scholarship funds? Thanks!

Thanks for the update. It looks like i'll probably end up in business school instead. I definitely don't want to pay sticker at Southwestern or any school for that matter. lol Good luck with the rest of your cycle!!

UNLV
Tuesday, January 04 2011 at 07:00 PM

Sorry to hear about UNLV. We have similar numbers and I'm still waiting for a decision. However, you have a great deal of other great schools to choose from. Good luck on the rest of your cycle!

Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words. This may be a little cheesy, if not cliche, but I try to live my life by the quote Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars. Hopefully it does play out in my favor. Have you decided/narrowed your list down to where you plan on matriculating?

Thanks!

Have you decided where you are headed?

Tuesday, January 04 2011 at 07:00 PM

Depends on an acceptance/rejection at UNLV...at this point UNLV is my number one choice out of the schools I have left (assuming a rejection from WUSTL/Iowa).

@ Julez, your profile is inaccessible, at least to me. The answer to your question is in my info.

Accidentally set my profile to private. You should be able to view it now if you wish. Good luck as a Husker!

INDY
Tuesday, November 30 2010 at 07:00 PM

Re IU-Indy, do you ask for more or tell them about other offers before getting the 99K offer? Thanks. Ryan
