Additional info & updates

11/13 received small thin envelope from OU. enclosed was my first rejection letter. a bit bummed/shocked with this particular decision, but such is life.

11/19 received email from UT saying they would be holding my application for consideration with the general applicant pool (i had applied ED). a pleasant surprise, because i was expecting an automatic reject!! guess the waiting continues...

11/27 received an email from tech saying my application was complete (FINALLY, goodness!) said my application will be sent to the admissions committee this week. not gonna lie, kinda freaked me out a little. they could be looking at it right now for all i know! c'mon tech, lemme in!

12/11 still waiting... and waiting... and waiting some more. checking my mailbox compulsively about 3 times a day, even though i know the mailman only comes once. all i want for Christmas is an acceptance letter from somewhere!!!

on a different note, i'm looking to apply to a few more schools over winter break. i received some fee waivers as well as recommendations of more schools to apply to from other applicants, so i figured why not?

1/14/08 FINALLYYYY my first acceptance! from arkansas, and dang it feels good!

1/18/08 in at texas tech!! came in a small envelope

4/23 its official, i'll be in lubbock come fall. who else is joining me? :)

Hey thanks! As of right now, Baylor is my first choice, but I'll wait to see what SMU says. What's your #1?

I'm in the same boat. Best of luck to you!

School selection
Monday, June 18 2007 at 08:00 PM

Right now, it's up in the air. I'm in Houston and would absolutely love to stay in town...and if lightening strikes, I'll be a 1L at UH! But that's not to say that another school in Texas or elsewhere won't sweep me off my feet! So I have no idea, to answer your question. How about you?

Big XII David Koresh Bears (like my name) Green and/or Gold... Which one are you at? Which is your #1?

the other SMU?
Tuesday, November 20 2007 at 07:00 PM

Haha, I'm joking about that. I think OU rejected most if not all Texans. They do have a strict residency quota (85%) so don't take it to hard. My #1 is Texas/GMU. My realistic #1 is SMU. Followed by Seton Hall/Penn State/South Carolina/Denver/Houston in no particular order. Then it's off to the T3/T4...

Don't waste your time on Regent. Looking at your schools and guessing on your numbers (PM on TLS if you want) I would say take a shot at Baylor and George Mason (Baylor through its website, GMU is free). Washington and Lee is free through their website. It would be a reach but worth a shot.

Based on what you wrote on sailorbear's wall, it looks like we both go to the same school, at least for another 10 days. Bummer that OU was your first decision, but as sailorbear said, their residency quota is rediculous and Texans don't want to go there anyway. Good luck on your other applications.

yeah, I saw that too, I don't know what their deal is. It may just be that they have pushed their timetable back and are waiting til January for decisions.

I'd rather wait til January for an acceptance than get a denial now though. So let's hope that what it is!

Sunday, July 08 2007 at 08:00 PM

First, thanks for the congrats. On TTU, I did apply early, but not under any sort of EA or ED program, just a regular application on LSAC. As for the seat deposit, it seems like it's some sort of pseudo-yield protection. The only real reason I can come up with is that they figure that by making their first round or two of acceptances commit really early, they can get rid of most of the people that didn't really want to go there or that will be getting in somewhere "better" and are only using Tech as a safety. This should then allow them to get to their wait lists a lot quicker and hopefully pick up people that would have went to other, comparable schools. Really, it's not a bad strategy and I would probably use it if I were them and in their position as a law school. It's just a kind of shitty thing to do to people that you know full well will still have other applications out there. Anyway, thanks again and good luck on the rest of your applications.

How did Pepperdine notify you that you were complete? I applied in October and I'm STILL waiting!

Texas Tech
Sunday, July 08 2007 at 08:00 PM

Honestly, I'll probably withdraw from Texas Tech if I haven't heard from all of my other schools before their deadline and I'll probably withdraw before that. I'd really rather not have to ask for my seat deposit back if I don't go there. Nothing about TT really stands out to me besides that they're cheap, have a good bar passage rate, and are reasonably close (less than a day's drive) to where I live right now. All of these are features also shared by Arkansas, which is where I'd rather go and they've given me more cash. If TT can't match Arkansas whenever I call to haggle with them, I'll probably withdraw. And even then, they'd probably have to beat Arkansas to look really attractive to me. It's nothing against Tech, I like them enough, but I have some ties to Arkansas and I'm more of a Razorback fan than a Red Raider fan. Plus, Arkansas may not be ballin' out of control, but at least they're THE university in their state. Tech has a lot more competition to deal with. So don't worry if you get wait listed, I think a slot may open soon... ;)

Barring some serious scholarship money or an unexpected acceptance from Florida, I think my cycle is pretty much over. Hopefully some positive decisions begin rolling your way pretty soon.

A suggestion
Sunday, October 21 2007 at 08:00 PM

Here's a suggestion.. If you want to boost your ego, and feel immediate gratification, apply at St. Mary's in San Antonio.. I've already been accepted.. if you got over a 150 on your LSAT, you would only be rejected if you tell them in your personal statement: if granted admission I will immediately go to your law building and burn it to the ground.. Besides it's in San Antonio, 200 miles from Houston.. Just don't get your hopes up about passing the bar if you attend St. Mary's, appearently to them it's not a requirement to practice law.

St Mary's
Sunday, October 21 2007 at 08:00 PM

St Mary's is at the bottom of the schools I wish to attend, but I don't have the best numbers, and don't know what my chancers are at getting accepted to better schools. However, I promise that if you have an LSAT of over 150 you'll get accepted and it would only be a boost to your self esteem.. Though St. Mary's is located in one of the worst parts of the entire city, but there is a police substation located there, so I don't think safety is too much of an issue.. As more me being sane, nothing could be further from the truth, I'm quite mad.. This waiting for returns is robbed me of my sanity.

Thanks!

Yes I got in...just forgot to actually update that part. Hah. Anyway, yeah I was notified through snail mail with the scholarship info included. Well thanks again and good luck with your cycle!

It is always nice to get that first one out of the way. No matter what happens from here on out, you can be sure you are going somewhere.

Tulane
Saturday, October 20 2007 at 08:00 PM

I'm fairly confident that is where I will be in the fall. I'm still waiting on decisions/scholarship info from a few schools, but with my GPA I'm not expecting much, if anything, from the schools that could change my mind.

Congrats

Waitlisted at Tech
Monday, October 22 2007 at 08:00 PM

I think I'll be waitlisted because of my index (2.7 on first LSAT, 2.8 on retry) Tech is kind of a wildcard. It's getting more competitive every year.

hey, thank you for the luck with tech! i really hope that there is still a chance i could get in...yes it's my #1 choice.. judging from what you've posted on others profiles, i go to school in the same town as you. :) best of your luck as your cycle continues, is tech one of your top choices?

good ole' cowtown
Sunday, December 02 2007 at 07:00 PM

well, actually we live in the same town. i graduated in dec from texas woman's in denton. thats cool about tech's gpa standards..where did you hear that? i hope that i get in, but i'm trying not to be incredibly neurotic and get my hopes up. if you don't mind me asking, when does tech require your deposit by? i'm just trying to judge when the optimal time to write my loci would be. thanks and again best of luck!

Well I did my undergrad at Tech and really I think I might be done with Lubbock. It is a backup school. I have been wanting to head to the pacific northwest because of how scenic/beautiful it is. If I go to a law school in Texas I probably won't ever leave so this is my chance. Are you planning on Tech?

hey there
Sunday, December 02 2007 at 07:00 PM

hi there, how's it going? just checking in.

tech
Sunday, February 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

Lubbock isn't all that bad. Sure there really are only one of most things, but to get *anywhere* in town takes at most 15 minutes.. which really spoils you if you have to go back to a big city. One good regular movie theater (+the drive in). A small mall that you can get turned around in. The downside is that there really isn't much to do that isn't TTU related in town (outside of partying/drinking). People complain about having to drive the Strip to buy beer, but again it takes at most 15 minutes to get there. I'm used to Dallas where everything is at least 15 minutes away. If you do end up at Tech, do NOT live anywhere east of University Ave. I would also advise against any apartments that are primarily undergrad. I was at Ashton Pointe, which is very quiet, but it has gotton pretty expensive ~$750/month (I paid $640).

Nope, nothing. Got an email late November saying that I was in review and that I'd hear back in two weeks. Is it just me or are Texas schools slow as molasses this cycle?

UT deferral
Monday, June 18 2007 at 08:00 PM

The email said we'd hear by mid-April. Hopefully that means sooner than later :-/

Sunday, December 02 2007 at 07:00 PM

wow, a deferral from SMU is pretty exciting...but i understand what you mean about the whole private school scene...how have things been going lately? yep, i send my LOCI to tech a few weeks ago...and magically/randomly/surprisingly i got a huge package from OU this friday offering me admission to the early admission program that starts in the summer. i'm pretty psyched, considering OU was a total reach, i had not expectation at all. best of luck for the rest of your cycle! hope you stay dry this weekend...it's icky out.

Yeah
Saturday, May 26 2007 at 08:00 PM

Lubbock is definitely not the most amazing place, but it does grow on you, and the people are nice. But yeah, I've decided that I'm going to Tech, and I'm also considering a joint degree, but the JD/MPA. I've heard a lot of good things about the joint degrees, and Rawls (the business school) has a good reputation in general. If you decide to come here, I can tell you the best places to live and where to stay away from. Good luck!

Saturday, May 26 2007 at 08:00 PM

Looking forward to it! I'll spill all the secrets of Lubbock when we meet, so you know the best places to live/eat/etc. if you come here. I'm not sure where you're from, but I'm from Dallas and it was a bit of an adjustment, but really it's a great little city that grows on you. Anyway, I'm not bringing a guest so I probably won't know anybody there, so it'd be nice to know at least one : )

Lubbock stuff
Saturday, May 26 2007 at 08:00 PM

Well, if you're looking for an apartment, there are a ton. I can try to help from my experience, though. There's a whole section of apartments right across University from campus, which includes places like University Trials, University Pointe, University Fountains and U Lofts, all of which are furnished. These are all extremely nice, but more expensive than others. I stay in The Gateway, which is also furnished and relatively quiet and cheap, but further from campus. Other places near me include University Courtyard and The Grove, which is still being built. Send me a message on facebook with a price range and/or area if you want, because I've had to look all over Lubbock for places, so I think I have a pretty good grasp on the market. Talk to you soon! P.S. Sorry for the long message.

No, I had no idea. It was a complete shock that I got in after receiving the rejection. Either way, it's pretty exciting. I think they have moved to #1, I am visiting next week so that'll confirm or deny.
