Extra Curricular Information

Two published philosophy journal articles and a book in the works (books stalled out but I'm still pushing it, and it was on my resumes. that's the kind of update you don't bother sending schools right?)

Lots of Community Service and work experience. No extra-curiculars,can't even spell extra-curicular

Florida was just for practice. Took name off waitlist for BYU so I could move back to Seattle next year and go to school there instead.

UW is my first pick. I sent in Gates Public Service Scholarship application (which luckily isn't based on academics since I won't be in the top of their recruiting pool) and an addendum on my history of poor performance on aptitude tests and other reasons my LSAT underpredicts my academic potential as invited on their admissions page.

Additional info & updates

11/05/07 email from U-W saying file is complete.

11/29/07 email from SU saying they're having trouble with LSDAS getting them their applications, but I will be considered with priority applications. LSDAS says they got everything fixed and sent on the 26th of Nov.

12/15/07 sent application to UNLV because my Dad said he would pay the $50. I don't think I really want to go there, but I'll wait to see how things play out. It is pretty inexpensive and well thought of for how new it is.

12/20/07 email from seattle saying my file was complete on 12/4, which sucks since I sent it sept. 24th, stupid LSDAS. Status checker says "File Complete - Decision Pending"

01/02/08 Absolute heart attack today when I saw a smaller than letter sized envelope from SU in the mail. It was a holiday card, sent 12/19/07. Why don't you people warn me about stuff like that? Tryin' to kill me...

01/07/08 Letter from UNLV dated 01/02 saying file is complete

01/11/08 Email from Temple saying file is complete

01/14/08 Acceptance from UNLV dated 01-10-08 in a ridiculously large envelope for five pieces of paper. L&C would be apauled. Anyway, scholarship 7K renewable if in the top third, and for some reason given in-state tuition, I guess because I graduated from a Nevada high school almost ten years ago.
I'm more excited than I thought I would be even though I have almost no intention of going to UNLV.

01/29/08 Exactly eight weeks since SU went complete (even though they said they would move me up because they had problems getting my file from LSDAS) and they say 6-8 weeks on the website, so status checker best be changin' today.

1/30/08 Status checker for SU changed to "decision mailed" today. Good to know threats still work. It says it was mailed 1-25-08, so I should get it two days ago.

2/4/8 Big packet from Seattle 10K per year conditional president's scholarship. Of course SU tuition minus 10K is still slightly more than UW in-state, but UW holding my application from October to February does not bode well according to their normal patterns from previous LSN years.

On that note, my brother who works for UNLV just sent me a newspaper article wherein they admit that they will be doubling tuition for 09-10 which means even if they double my scholarship, I'm still not getting the deal I thought I was. Washington's my best option by far, so I'm just praying for a waitlist at this point.

02-16-08 In Vegas for the weekend so I took the UNLV tour. It was cool; they let me drive the golf cart.

02-19-08 Got a confirmation from U-W finaid department that they had recieved my application. Is this just because I put their number on my FAFSA?

03-06-08 Email from temple which I'm sure was supposed to come after my acceptance letter, but my mail is getting forwarded and has been taking upwards of two weeks to arrive.
**Later: Big envelope sent 2-25, really nice folder. I'm definantly gonna use that.

03-11-08 Calls for the Gates Scholarship have been switched from the 4th to the 21st on the UW calendar
**Update: No call. Still holding out for UW. They're still the best.

03-25-08 UW at 176 days and counting

03-26-08 Wishing I'd gotten the waitlist email instead of the one I got a few hours later. Kinda excited to finally check that attending box though. If I can still get in on Summer start at SU looks like I start school in two months!!!

06-10-08 Just got an email from UW saying they may have several spots open for the Fall and to contact them if I'm still interested. You'd think after making me wait six months they would have had the sense to put me at the bottom of the waitlist anyway, but aparently they think they're a little cooler than they really are.
I'm thinking not at this point. I'm pretty well set up at SU

You're a lock at Seattle. Have you considered retaking LSAT? Games are easiest to improve on. Good luck!

thanks, I've accepted my games handicap and wouldn't be disapointed to go to seattle

Thanks for the encouragement, its much nicer to hear some congratulatory responses rather than some rude rants. But thanks and good luck with Seattle and Washington, I'll keep checking for updates

No I am passing on the Gates scholarship--- it requested additional LORs and essays and I dont think I am what they are looking for. I am just praying to get admitted as a regular student!! Are you applying for it?

Thanks

I moved to Portland a few years ago and LOVE the Northwest (originally from the South). Not exactly sure where I'll end up, but having a very hard time letting go...though I suppose I can always return. Shoot. The older I get, the harder it is. Guess you like it here, too. Best of luck!

I don't suppose your enthusiasm for me regarding Michigan would have anything to do with your pending app at UW, eh? ;)

Hey, hey. Hoping to see someone with similar numbers crack UW. I'm going to scope out your page every day for a decision since you applied much earlier than me. Best wishes!

I have WA state residency so I applied in case I decide I can't afford to pay full tuition at a different school. It looks like you won't have a problem getting in, though. I'm jealous you'll get to stay in Seattle - it's one of the best cities in the country!

Vegas, baby!

Congrats on Vegas! Even though you have little intention of going there, still nice to feel wanted, no?

on UNLV! And here's hoping for some more good news soon!

email

Thanks for the congratulations. I'm glad they liked the grad degree, I'm pretty excited about the acceptance. I do know why I got the email instead of a letter. The first email said something like your application is great, we really want to admit you, but we need item X to make it official. Not the exact wording, but you get the idea. I sent them item X, and then I was officially admitted when I checked to make sure it had been received. So I counted the initial email as the acceptance, even though it was technically unofficial at the time. I have not yet received a letter in the mail. Good luck to you. I see UW is your top choice, so hopefully well be classmates in the fall!

Good luck- hope you get it soon- will be watching to see. UW is a great school, and I LOVE Seattle. But the Darrow kind of clinched it for me. Sigh. Why can't UM come to the Northwest? The weather is so much better....

Every day I stalk your page to see if you've received your UW decision...I don't think the fact that they're holding your file so long is necessarily bad news. They've said no to a lot of people with better numbers than us and who applied sooner/later, etc. Best of luck!

Number, School and Degree Twins
Monday, July 16 2007 at 08:00 PM

I too stalk your page in reference to UW. And our numbers are very similar... More imporantly, we also went to the same school and graduated with the same degree. Our soft factors our different and I'm not from WA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I feel your pain re: Washington. I sent my app. in early Oct and went complete the same day you did. I think we're the last ones left scratching our heads. It makes me wonder why we're so (un?) lucky -- I'm pretty much your opposite, high LSAT, low GPA. UW is my first choice, but at this point I really just want it to be over with more than anything so I can move on with my life one way or the other. Anyhow, I just wanted you to know there's someone else out there who feels your pain and/or confusion. Good luck!

UW
Thursday, January 24 2008 at 07:00 PM

Y'know, I'm with you re: your two theories. I'm leaning (hoping) toward the secondary review pile, but if the waitlist is the case, that would be really interesting. Looks like most everyone who stayed on the waitlist last year got offered a spot, whereas hardly anyone got in off the list the previous two years. Given my numbers, I would be shocked if they offered me a spot, given my numbers, but my soft factors have made for a pretty head-scratching cycle thusfar...aaaand that's the problem with them holding out some kind of hope. I feel like Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber..."what are my odds? A hundred to one?" "...more like a million to one." "...so you're saying I've got a chance!!!"

Thanks for your comment

Okay, your UW decision is driving me crazy too. I wish I didn't have internet access at work. I really hope I see you there next year!

WTF on BYU? you've got good numbers, and did your undergrad there? wow...

BYU
Friday, February 22 2008 at 07:00 PM

yeah if i end up at BYU it will be because of their rating and how cheap they are. I'm not all about that moral superiority bull$#!^. it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

*sigh*
Thursday, January 24 2008 at 07:00 PM

Well, at least now I can stop going crazy...Hopefully you'll fare better than I did!

UWTF?
Thursday, January 24 2008 at 07:00 PM

I just have to throw in my two cents and state the obvious: you got a really raw deal from UW. They shouldn't have needed to hold out for SIX MONTHS to come to a decision like that. Talk about feeling strung along. Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I've been rooting for you, and it looks like Seattle is lucky to have you!

congrats on your acceptances!
Wednesday, January 16 2008 at 07:00 PM

I got the same sort of email deal (rejection) from UW today after about five months of waiting, but Seattle U is a great school and you got money...sweet!!!

SU
Tuesday, March 18 2008 at 08:00 PM

I was going back and forth about it the summer start, but I decided to go ahead and do it. I'll still be working all summer, but I think once full-time classes start I'll be happy about having one less class. What about you?

Re: SU
Wednesday, December 19 2007 at 07:00 PM

Wish I could do summer start. I'm going to be out of the country for almost a month though in July, so it's not an option for me. You?

Re: UW
Monday, January 28 2008 at 07:00 PM

I don't know. I lived in Seattle for two years and loved it, but the scholarship and in-state tuition is going to be hard to pass up at Wisconsin.
