Extra Curricular Information

not really extracurricular, but...

masters in Sport Administration from a small jesuit school

some snazzy internships, most of which labor relations based. one was somewhat legally inclined (contract administration) with a professional sports team.

virtually no extracurricular's during undergrad. I did work about 20 hours a week all the way through. during grad school i did some volunteer work at a immigration center, mostly doing Spanish translation.

i know at least 2 of my 3 rec's were gleaming... the 3rd i'm sure was strong but may have alluded to several weaknesses.

Additional info & updates

All completions were through e-mail with the exception of Texas, which was through their online status check.

GMU acceptance came via a phone call - they said I should be receiving my packet in a couple of days.

Wash&Lee acceptance came in a regular size envelope. Almost gave me a heart attack.

Temple acceptance came in a large envelope.

UIUC acceptance came via e-mail, stating that my acceptance packet would be mailed out within the week.

UIUC packet came 02/02/06, with a nice little $10,000/yr bonus.

Wake Forest came in a big green and white envelope.

Notre Dame came via e-mail that included a $10,000/yr scholarship. I should receive the packet in a couple days. WAS NOT expecting that one with my grades. phew!

Deferral from Minn in a regular letter sized envelope. Kind of disappointed, but I'm still pretty pumped from the ND acceptance.

Rejected from Gtown in a letter sized envelope. Honestly, I'm not sure why I applied there - I wasn't that into it and I figured I wouldn't get in.

Rejected from GW in a little envelope. I think I've peaked.

Another reject in a little envelope, this time from UT. I think I'm just going to start throwing out anything with a little plastic window before I even open it.

Yay! A scholarship from Wash&Lee. They are back in the running.

Thin envelope from Far Above Cayuga's Waters. No love from the alma mater.

Deferral from Wisco. No offense, but wtf??

Waitlisted at UGA. Woof.

FINALLY rejected from Duke. What took them so long?

Got a call today (5/2) from Minn, asking "what my intentions were" for the upcoming year. I said, "uhh.. I don't know... what are yours?" The woman laughed. She asked if I would still be interested in Minnesota. I asked if she wanted to give me $10,000 a year. She laughed again, not as genuinely this time. Shortly after, she e-mailed me info about how to formally withdraw my application. So long, Twin Cities.

99% looking for a roommate at ND.

Those dates are accurate... They emailed me on the 9th and the letter was dated the 15th. Quick I thought.

Thanks! Yeah, the dates are accurate, I was pretty surprised at the turn around time as well. Their admissions department seems to be on the ball!! Good luck to you!

horror stories?
Friday, September 09 2005 at 08:00 PM

What horror stories have you heard? Why would law schools use LSN against anyone? Just curious.

Howdy

Howdy and congrats on W&L. You're not exactly my number match but your app/complete/decision dates seem to be lining up with mine - I heard from GMU this Monday and I'm crossing my fingers over W&L to reply soon because I'm definitely pulling some hairs over the possibility of being stuck at GMU. Just curious, what's your top choice amongst all those schools? Best of luck.

GMU and Miscellany
Friday, July 29 2005 at 08:00 PM

Well, my top choices are prolly UVA and Duke (being an alumni of the former I hope helps a little)... although I get a feeling that even with my numbers, I have something of a snowball's chance in hell and I've given them a hefty $70 donation... It's weird. I was excited about GMU when I got accepted even though it was what I considered to be a 'quasi-safety' (between 65-85th percentile but not an absolute guarantee). On paper it looks great but I can't shake off the feeling that it's a second tier (or worse, still a third tier) school masquerading as a first tier one through clever faculty hirings and number manipulation. As a resident of Northern Virginia, it's hard to reassure something even associated with the third-tier commuter undergrad school as being good.

Wow

we are applying to a lot of the same schools. I hope you get what you want, good luck!!

GMU cont. and W&L
Friday, July 29 2005 at 08:00 PM

Well, it's unfortunate that GMU has such a negative reputation. It is a forerunner of innovation and it's definitely a good school to go to if you want a job in the DC area if you only got into GMU, but I simply don't think that its reputation is strong enough compared to many other schools, even those in comparable rankings. In fact, another ranking suggested that GMU in fact had a top notch top-30 faculty compared to even higher-ranked schools like W&M... but it's a bit too young for me and it just has an ugly local reputation that's going to take the school quite a long time to shake off.. Right now, simply because of costs alone (being in-state and all) and familiarity (I apped to W&M for undergrads too), William and Mary is my top choice, W&L a close second. W&L is supposed to be a great program, but it's less of a DC/N. Va school and more of a Va/South school from what I heard. Out in Lexington (i.e. middle of nowhere southwestern Va), it supposedly gets somewhat lost when recruiters go down to the Commonwealth. W&L has a better program and faculty than W&M in my opinion, but W&M is to my knowledge better recognized in the region (I'm sure quite a few people have asked 'where the hell is Lexington, VA') and for me, it's a huge bargain compared to trudging into a private law school. We'll see in February though, since I reckon most of my decisions will be in (crossing my fingers on UVA) and the financial aid/scholarships will be awarded then, although I'm not expecting much. Congrats on your two new acceptances, and best of luck getting into Cornell.

UVA Residency

No... not a resident of VA

ND and such.
Friday, July 29 2005 at 08:00 PM

Sorry to hear about Gtown and GWU. But you got some awesome acceptances including ND with a $10k/year scholarship! Congrats! U of Minnesota? I've never heard of 'em. Was that a safety for you? For me, W&M still is my top choice, since they're giving me money and it's not that far off from W&L in USNEWS rankings (22nd and 27th) although there's a few variables I need to work out. Best of luck on the rest of the apps and I'll be rooting for ya for Cornell.

Good Luck

Congrats on Notre Dame. We have identical scores so good luck with the rest of your schools.

hey i'll be at ND as well this fall, e mail me if you want

Howdy again.
Friday, July 29 2005 at 08:00 PM

Sorry about Cornell. But you're getting some awesome deals on W&L and ND. Do you think you'll be headed south or do you think you're going off to the Midwest? UVA's killing me, but I think a part of me has made peace with going to W&M. W&L apparently 'ran out of money' so I figure paying $20k a year for LS @ W&M has to be a good thing. :) Good luck with the rest of your apps. I'm surprised you haven't heard from W&M. You have the numbers for 'em I think, although I think they do put a little bit more emphasis on GPA.

UT Question

When you checked your status for UT online, did it say it was complete or was being processed? Thanks!

Miss Maguire...Are you heading to ND? When will you be heading to South Bend?

Is done for me. I'm still going to accept my spot on the waitlist but I'm not holding my breath.

I e-mailed them after I visited in February and said that I really loved the trip, but I had some higher offers from other schools. They said they would re-evaluate the situation and notify me by April 1. I e-mailed them on April 3 and they said they had sent me a letter on March 31 letting me know they had increased my scholarship by 5k.

wtf Wisconsin?
Thursday, March 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

I had worse numbers than you, and got into Wisco, but some people that got in over you.......WTF!

There was a girl there from Cornell waiting to hear about Cornell's law school. I thought it might have been you.

No decision yet

I'm still waiting on USC and UC Hastings. I think I'll be making my final decision in late May. Congrats on Notre Dame!
