Additional info & updates

02/01 - Notified by mail of acceptance to Loyola-New Orleans and $15000 annual renewable merit scholarship.

02/06 - E-mail from LSU saying bulk of application decisions won't be made until between April and June! wtf. I should be an auto-accept at LSU. I hope that was just a mass e-mail and that I can get a decision from them by the end of March. We'll see.

02/17 - Notified by e-mail of acceptance to Tulane! I was a bit surprised actually, considering my LSAT number is near their low end. Maybe they want to boost their Midwestern numbers. Decisions of merit aid to come in mail soon.

02/20 - Big envelope from Tulane with no mention of merit $, so assuming I get 0. :-( This means I'll be considered for need-based $, but who knows how much of that they're giving out? Hopefully I can get a piece of that -- otherwise it would probably be fiscally irresponsible for me to attend Tulane.

03/02 - Waiting isn't so fun -- and honestly, based on my numbers, I'm only holding out real hope for SLU and LSU. Based on SLU's admits so far, I think I should get in there and get some merit $. Let's hope so, because if that's the case, that'd probably be where I'll end up going unless Tulane comes up with a decent need-based package.

03/02 - Accepted at LSU! Two small white envelopes, one with acceptance notice and the other with deposit deadline of April 1st. No mention of $ at all...do they give merit scholarships at LSU upon admission?

03/06 - Waiting on Iowa, Illinois, and SLU . . . . . and waiting . . . . . my files have long been complete with all of them, so I don't know what's holding them back, although I can at least dream that it's because they are struggling over how much more scholarship money to offer me. Yeah....right. :-|

03/09 - I finally received the big white envelope of love from SLU today. Or so I thought. Yes, I was accepted. But with no mention of scholarship money, I am stunned. Based on what others have reported being offered, I was expecting $8-15K per year. It's like a big fuck you. Nevertheless, it's now an option.

03/09 - I e-mailed Illinois and Iowa admissions to ask for status updates. Got a reply back from Illinois 9 minutes later saying that my file is in committee and being reviewed now and that I may hear something in 1-2 weeks. No word back from Iowa. If I miraculously got accepted to either Iowa or Illinois, it would be hard for me to turn down, especially Illinois with in-state tuition. Iowa wouldn't be bad either at full price, since that's what it looks like I'm going to be stuck with anyway with my other schools (besides Loyola New Orleans).

03/10 - E-mail reply from Iowa: my file has been placed on hold, and I'll be updated on its status on or before April 1.

03/22 - Withdrawing my apps from LSU (by mail) and Loyola-New Orleans (by e-mail)

03/26 - Received letter of rejection from UIUC.

03/26 - Received letter with option to be waitlisted at Iowa. I'll be pulling my name off that. I'd have gone there if accepted, but the waitlist would probably be a long shot.

03/27 - Received letter from Tulane with a notice of $2,500 annual need-based scholarship. It may be small considering cost of attendance is $52,000, but it is definitely appreciated. ;-)

03/30 - First committment deposit sent to Tulane, withdrawing apps from SLU and requesting removal from Iowa waitlist.

Thanks. Congratulations to you too. Seems like even this year was quite a tough year to get into Tulane. Are you still thinking of going to Iowa?

not yet, hoping for something though! Congrats on Tulane, it is my first choice, although it seems my chances for getting in are getting slimmer by the day...do you think you did anything that put you over the edge there? Congrats again, i'm sure you are going to have some great choices to pick from!

Nothing mentioned in my acceptance letter or anything they've sent me since then... I'm a Louisiana resident and have great numbers for them so I'm definitely expecting something. Are you thinking about going to their Admitted Students Day on 3/17?

Fin Aid
Saturday, September 10 2005 at 08:00 PM

You have received great Fin aid from a couple of your schools, I see how that much money can persuade anyone. I hope to get some $$ from Tulane. Good luck with the rest of your apps!

I got a packet from Tulane where they'd left the scholarship info out, and it arrived under seperate cover. You might double check with them, or let them know you have an offer from Loyola and ask if they'll match it. Can't hurt, and I understand negotiation on scholarship is common. By April they'll know how many of the first round of accepted applicants are coming, those who withdraw might free up some money.

No word yet on merit based money. The acceptance email said that they'd send that info w/the formal acceptance packet in the mail. I still haven't gotten that yet. I'm thinking that they received my financial aid forms a few weeks ago and decided that I'd be better off w/need based aid and that's the reason for the hold up (or at least I hope that's the case). I noticed that you're hoping for need based aid too. I think they're going to take a while getting back to us w/need based grants. Hope you get a big one and congrats on all your acceptances! p.s. Are you visiting for admitted students' day?

yeah, Roger Williams does have a pretty good maritime law program (or so all their brochures say.) The campus/area also happens to be gorgeous. After 4 years of undergrad in New England, I'd kind of like to go to school in NY - I've missed home, hah. I love your theory on your last three schools - maybe that's what Fordham and Brooklyn are doing about me, too. ;) good luck!

Congrats on Tulane

Hopefully you get money from Tulane. I know how you feel--- admission is nice, but not when you just can't afford to go. Good luck.

Thanks

Completion date...
Monday, February 20 2006 at 07:00 PM

How did you know when your application was complete at SLU? Did they send you a notice? I applied mid-Feb. but my report wasn't sent until Feb. 28. Could you give me an idea of how long it took? Thanks and maybe I'll see you at SLU next year:)

Tulane v. SLU
Saturday, January 21 2006 at 07:00 PM

Well only you know which school is going to make you happy. Rankings really do matter, despite what people in lower ranked schools like to say. If you plan on working in Missouri, the SLU makes sense, but it does not have the national reputation you'd need to land a good job without connections somewhere else. If admiralty/ maritme law is really what you'd want to do, there is nothing to think about. If you're not passionate about it, you're going to find it very boring. In any case, good luck and I hope you make the right decision for your needs.

Tulane & SLU...
Saturday, October 22 2005 at 08:00 PM

Well, I'd have to agree with what egordon said. I think it really depends on where you want to practice. I'm interested in the southeast (preferably Atl) as opposed to the midwest where I believe SLU grads would have better opportunities. I was willing to reconsider where I wanted to practice, but after I visited St. Louis, I pretty much confirmed that I'd stay in the south. I like St. Louis, but I don't love it. Also, the law school at SLU is kind of a disappointment. It's surrounded by all these gorgeous buildings, but its looks fall far short of what you'd expect. I also wandered into SLU's library. It reminded me of my small town library back home. Tulane has better facilities (great library and reading room) and reptuation. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, I'm leaving you w/my email. Feel free to leave a message. Finally, congrats and I hope to see you at Tulane!

I wish you luck and I hope your final decision is the right decision. In the end, you're the one who has to live with your choice:-) If we do end-up being classmates, be sure to say "hello."

Congrats

on Tulane. There is a lot to explore in that part of Louisiana. Baton Rouge is an hour away and has really grown into a very nice city.

Baton Rouge

is a nice place to visit. If you have time on your visit, try to go there because it is really beautiful. Loyola is very free hearted with money. In high school, I was promised a scholarship if I would apply to the school, but I did not and ended up in the Army. It is also a nice place. Best wishes on your decision!!
