Extra Curricular Information

Numbers slightly fudged...will update with accurate figures after cycle.

*A note: I decided at the start that I will not pay sticker for law school when I don't have to. Way too debt-averse, public interest leanings (but want to keep my options open, so I can't just rely on a good LRAP), etc. As a result, Michigan, Northwestern, Cornell and GTown were off the table unless enough people with scholly offers withdraw so they can offer me some. And even then, I'd probably have only seriously consider Northwestern of this group (for several reasons, personal and professional).

Additional info & updates

Cycle over--here I come, Austin!

4-22-10: Out at Harvard. Not so shocking;).

4-16-10: Stanford waitlist WHAA?!?! Ok, I'll stay on this one on the impossible chance that a miracle happens here, but I'm still looking ahead to Austin!

4-15-10: Headed to Austin--SUPER EXCITED! Hook 'em!

4-7-10: Withdrew from USC. Never filled out the scholarship app.

4-7-10: Texas' Scholly Matching Program worked!

4-6-10: Hey guys. It's been awhile:). Visited GW, GTown, WashU, and Texas. Last on the list is Vandy this weekend. Didn't like GW or GTown like I expected to. Liked WashU much more than I expected. Texas in all its longhorn/Tex-Mex/weather perfection may have won me over. Looks like it all comes down to this Nashville visit. Can't wait to have a decision made!

3-26-10: A scholarship alternate at Gtown and no $ first round at Northwestern. Boo.

3-12-10: Full ride at UNC. This was really tough. Ended up withdrawing.

3-5-10: In at Northwestern! Oh man, this is going to be tough...

3-1-10: Vandy scholly via snail mail!

2-25-10: Holy cow, Wash U! I may need to add you to the visit list.

2-19-10: Waitlisted at Berkeley.

2-5-10: Cricket, cricket...waiting on scholly info from most, admissions info from a few...

1-13-10: Held at Harvard--exciting! Ha, though I'm sure it's coming, to not be in the auto-reject file feels pretty good:).

1-11-10: In at GW with a nice scholarship. Sent to faculty committee at Berkeley.

12-27-09: In at USC.

12-21-09: In at UNC. Withdrew from Duke:).

12-17-09: Invited to interview or priority track ED at Duke. What to do...

12-16-09: First ding: UVa.

12-10-09: In at Cornell!

12-9-09: In at WUSTL via email!

12-3-09: Duke and UVa--what's up with the haterade? Still no word...doesn't look good...

12-2-09: Michigan update: Under "admissions communication" it says "offer package sent" AHHH, in at Michigan!

12-2-09: Just tried logging into the Michigan admitted students website and it let me...fingers crossed I'm not a glitch in the system!

11-18-09: After finally finding enough free moments, the final app is submitted! (it was Northwestern, of all places...one of my top choices...it was just a great move to save this one until at least three weeks after the others...)

11-17-09: In at UCLA!

11-10-09: In at Vandy! Their admissions office and every student I've ever met from there makes me think this would be a really great place to spend three years.

11-4-09: In at Georgetown!! SO EXCITED!

11-2-09: Decision rendered at Gtown. Eep!

10-29-09: First decision - in at Texas! Such a relief that I'm going to law school:).

10-28-09: Under review at Berkeley, Duke and Gtown. A tiny voice on my shoulder is wondering if I did anything horribly wrong on my apps and won't get in anywhere. Probably won't go away until an acceptance comes in:/.

10-20-09: Over halfway done with the apps...just keep swimming, just keep swimming

10-7-09: Two down, eight bajillion to go.

8-21-09: Transcripts are in, two of four recommendations are in, personal statement is started but nowhere near finished. Hoping to get everything finished and in by early October!

You should get into a t-14 no problem with those stats.

I'm having an awesome time. It's an incredible country. I have been in Brisbane for a little over a month now, and not a single day has passed without intense sunshine. I'll be rooting for you as the process unfolds. Should be fun.

You too! Our stats are eerily similar. In fact, my LSAC GPA turned a 3.83 into a 3.85, and it seems like yours did the reverse! Isn't a 169 such an uneasy score? 1 point below the median at so many schools... Good luck with HLS, I'm still debating whether to throw a hail mary app there.

Congrats on UNC - I believe you are the first of the cycle!

Plans?

We are having very similar cycles, even with the scholarships, so I was wondering what you think you might do? Are you going to Michigan's ASW?

I just heard from Vanderbilt this morning, and I'm pretty excited. If they offered a scholarship comparable to the one from UT, it would be very hard to pass up. What about you? You continue to have an impressive cycle. Are any schools starting to distance themselves from the pack?

Friday, October 16 2009 at 08:00 PM

Well it was Michigan. But this money from WashU is gonna throw a monkey wrench into this! What about you?

Congrats!

Great cycle! Do you know which admitted student days you're going to? Just curious too - why did you drop Duke? I'm currently looking at them so I'm always interested to see why people reject it :)

Northwestern

WAY TO GO! You are going to have some tough decisions on your hands!

Game Over for Me!
Sunday, October 18 2009 at 08:00 PM

You guessed it--Vanderbilt it is! I read your message as I was withdrawing all of my other applications. You have a lot of good options and only one waitlist, so unless you're dead-set on Berkeley, Harvard, or Stanford, hopefully you'll have an ounce of certainty in the next few weeks. With the acceptance at Northwestern, is there still any chance of you ending up at Vandy next fall? GOOD LUCK!

just saw your comment

Good luck to you, too, on the scholarship front! Waiting for $ news is making me very nervous, since $ will likely be the deciding factor, and my top choice has yet to release $ decisions. I had no idea there'd still be this much uncertainty in March! Hope things work out for you, too.

Visits
Sunday, October 18 2009 at 08:00 PM

I would definitely recommend visiting as many schools as possible. I visited most of the schools on my list, and it really helped me separate schools that looked very similar on paper. I completely understand not wanting to pay full price for law school, and I think you will end up with lots of great options at less than sticker price.

Oh, and

I won't be able to make it to either ASD as I'll be in Australia until July. Bummer.

Are you sure that UMich isn't giving you any money? They seem to do it pretty formulaically based on numbers. And if they're not, based on what people told me at the ASW, they would offer money if you told them your other offers.

Just curious....why do you prefer UNC over Duke Law?
