Returned to college for a second degree in Electrical Engineering and Math. GPA now a 2.98 with a 3.5 in my EE major - still not good but mathematically there's not alot you can do with 200 hours. GPA goes down quickly, but up slowly. Hopefully, they take the upward trend into account....not sure it will help. I am currently working in IP as a Patent Agent. Hopefully a helpful soft factor.
By the way...I'm aware that Vanderbilt is a LONGSHOT...all they can say is "no", so why not.
Some have wondered why I haven't applied to more law schools and the answer is quite simple...I'm not a 21 year-old new graduate. I have a husband, step-son and a mortgage and my husband will be the sole provider once I go to school. I also have no interest in being too far away from home. I can appreciate the comments concerning applying to more schools and would take it into consideration given different circumstances. Worse case scenario I take the LSAT study course and try again next year! :)
11/08 - Apps. are in. Let's see where this goes. Good luck all.
11/24/08 - I'm starting to see some results on LSN for some of the schools that I applied for...although most of those who are getting replies have nearly a 4.0 and an amazing LSAT score. I have a feeling I will be a "wait until the last minute" applicant. It would be nice to hear before the beginning of the year! :)
12/10/2008 - A status check on the Northern Kentucky U website says a notification letter has been mailed. So essentially I waited for the email to tell me to wait for the mail...not helpful. Although Chase is my last pick, it would be nice to get in somewhere early and change the question "Will it happend?" to "Where will it happen?"
Chase (Northern KY) does have an IP program, so that is one positive. Oddly enough, the schools that are known for their IP programs aren't always the ones known for their law school...which is handy, given my scores. :D
12/12/2008 - I recieved a letter from NKU saying they were going to "defer" looking at my application until February. (I assume that is the same thing as "waitlisted") Ouch. Essentially, I got online confirmation that I was going to be notified followed by a letter notifying me that I would be notified at a later date. I think I would have preferred just waiting. I don't take it as a good sign when your last chance school defers your application. Silver lining: Most law school applicants in this area, and beyond, add NKU to their picks as a last resort. No offense NKU - I'll go there in a minute if I'm allowed to...I'm not in any position to be a law school snob. However, many of them get in somewhere else and withdraw...this could be the result of that....or it could be wishful thinking.
The waiting game continues.
12/17/2008 - In my head, I realize that expecting an end to my cycle before Christmas is absurd...but the child in me is getting very antsy and a little cranky.
Received a letter yesterday from U of L telling me that they look forward to reviewing my application and they hope that I will consider applying.....maybe this letter has been lost in the mail for a month? I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the envelope from the U of L Admissions Office...not cool...bad dog U of L.
12/22/2008 - Was educated on some law school admissions lingo today. My application is "deferred" for later review at NKU which is not the same as waitlisted. Due to my numbers they are waiting to see how many "good numbers" they can get before slumming :) Hey...ya gotta laugh or cry.
The waitlist only applies to those still up for consideration in the event the class is full and an accepted applicant withdraws. I'm probably the only person on this website unaware of this distinction. I am also now "deferred" for a February 1st re-review with UK - not being summarily rejected is encouraging! Still waiting on Vandy (not holding my breath) and UofL (my first pick).
12/30/2008 - I wish I could go into hibernation until February. The waiting is becoming more and more painful by the day. But, getting on here and rambling helps. Although, it would be nice if UK and U of L had status checkers.
Working full-time is really getting in the way of my application obsession. However, I think if I didn't work I would sit in the post office parking lot with my laptop... so it is probably a good thing.
1/5/2009 - My New Year's resolution is to realize that schools were closed over the holidays like everyone else and that expecting notification in the next few days is probably unrealistic. Why this knowledge will not prevent me from racing to the mailbox like a lunatic is beyond me.
Positive Note - *It's nice to finally be in the same year as my potential 1L class. Makes it a little more real. Happy New Year!
1/6/2009 - Thought I would add my soft factors for those in my numbers boat. I have nothing so far that can verfity that they are helpful...but in the event I get in, maybe it will help someone else. Call it a social experiment for those with less that perfect scores.
1995 - BA - Psychology, Sociology and Criminology
worked with Juvenile Justice to include juvenile sex offenders and those with drug addictions. From there I worked for the Department of Justice as a Criminal Intellingence Analyst before deciding to go back to school.
2007 - BS - Electrical Engineering and Math. Passed the patent bar last year and have been writing patents and driving myself crazy about my chances for a law degree.
1/8/2009 - I'm really hoping that insanity will not hinder my performance in law school. I emailed U of L for a status update - and I am now seeing a new box on the Chase status website for fees (It's empty...but I don't recall seeing it before) Perhaps I never scrolled down...curious.
1/9/2009 - No news...just wanted to meet my obsession quota for the day.
Have KY schools failed to reopen after the holidays? I have seen absolutely NO signs of life on this site for my schools.
1/13/2009 - YAWN....I'm getting bored.
1/20/2009 - It took me a minute to log on today...I forgot my password! I think I'm going to wait untile February to check my mail again.....aghhhh!
1/22/2009 - I"M GOING TO LAW SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!
In at U of L!! Large white envelope and a personal note from the chair of the admissions committee....I can now get a good night's sleep!
Vandy shows that a decision has been mailed. Not very hopeful of my chances... but getting an acceptance first will take some of the sting out!!!
I plan to withdraw from NKU, not because I don't like it, but because I got into a much closer school.
1/27/2009 - Rejected from Vandy....shocking ;)
2/4/2009 - sent an email inquiring about my UK app. status...it's up for review TOMORROW. Now I wish I didn't know...kind of strange to know that people will be discussing my worth tomorrow.
3/11/2009 - after the last update on UK I redeferred for review tomorrow 3/12/2009. I received an acceptance from NKU and I plan to withdraw since I was accepted at my first choice U of L. I still want to see if UK will be an acceptance or rejection to hopefully be able to give others in my "score zone" hope. I would be lying to say the acceptances, even from the schools I don't plan to attend, aren't a boost of encouragment. No worries to thoses applying to those schools, I will not drag my feet withdrawing my application so others can get a shot. I won't hold a spot just to massage my ego....assuming I get in.
3/13/2009 - Got in at UK...didn't see that coming. I guess I need to to some soul searching on the school that is right for me. UK is ranked higher...but I feel more comfortable with U of L. I need to determine which is best for IP law...I know that more IP firms exist in Louisville over Lexington...that might be the difference. Any suggestions?????
Thx! Good luck to you! I know how stressful this can be! But you're right all they can say is NO so it's always worth it to try! I suggest applying to a few more schools. :)
