Thanks for the comforting words. Im feeling so nervous all the time...I really hope youre right. Kudos for sending in all those revisions!! That IS tough. You must have had a goooooood weekend after all that :). You guessed right, I am from ktownare you?
You have strong numbers and I'm positive you'll get into Loyola. I was lucky with the amount of money I got from them, seriously. There are a bunch of other applicants on LSN with MUCH better numbers than me who got didn't get any. I have no clue why, but maybe you'll get lucky like me!! :) My top choice is UC Irvine. If I don't get in, I'm reconsidering law school. I know it sounds crazy, but it's the truth. :T
thanks and congrats to you too and on your awesome Baylor scholarship. i noticed we applied to many places the same day, so we'll probably be getting letters around the same time. hopefully Loyola both lets us in, it's also one of my top choices!
We have almost the exact same numbers and the same offer from Pepperdine. I got into George Mason but denied at Hastings. Hastings pissed me off because a few guys with lower numbers were accepted over me. SF is a pain to live in though, so I doubt I would have gone even if accepted. But with the money offered from Pepperdine I don't know if I will be able to refuse them. They are basically offering to pay for you and I to have our own really nice apartments for free! Sounds pretty good, and stress free. It is down to UC Davis (if they accept me) or Pepperdine or George Mason for me probably. My logic is all of these schools are basically decent schools where you can start out making about 100K or more if you earn honors. So for me, probably the best financial package and coolest, cheapest town to live in will decide it. Prefer Cali, but DC area would be pretty tight for law school. If Pepperdine can up the ante a bit more, I won't refuse them no matter who else accepts me. Peace.
hey congrats on your acceptances and $$$ so far... that's fantastic. goodness I'd kill for your pepperdine acceptance... actually I would kill to hear back from a soCal school or any school. the waiting game stinks. :(
thanks for the nice words about Pepperdine. I sadly got waitlisted today... maybe you can send some more good will down the line about me hopefully getting off the waitlist (which is not very likely) but still... :? Have a good Valentines day.
What would you do if Loyola didn't offer you any money, but you got into Davis and Hastings? Would the fact that Davis and Hastings are both significantly cheaper than Loyola make you consider those schools? Funny to think that our lives are going to be like this for the next 5 years. Lots of anxiety, waiting, and last minute decisions. :P
Congrats on Temple and the big Pepperdine scholly! We are applying to many of the same schools... I wish I had your GPA! Here's hoping you get Hastings and Davis!
thank you. you're a doll. i'm guessing right now Baylor is your top choice... ;) gahh... i finished my loci but I just can't seem to get it right so i'm just sitting on it for a day or so and i'll come back to it later. i still hate the waiting game. i need to get another acceptance soon cause it's totally disheartneing to have so many r's and w's. ;( good luck with everything else. is loyola really your top choice? or now that you have other highly ranked acceptances with good $... you've changed it up?
I would do more research about starting salaries for attorneys that graduate from Loyola and Pepperdine. I am finding that they are starting out just as high as Davis and Hastings. Loyola 3 year JD LLM tax students can start at 140 with just good grades. The 10-20 school ranking advantage doesn't seem to translate to any more money. You still need top 25% grades at either school to break 100K. Top 5 students grades isn't necessary. With those grades you start at 160K even at Loyola or Pepperdine, maybe even Santa Clara. Most firms see the rankings for all these school as adequate if your grades are well above average. Avg private practice attorneys from Pepperdine is reported to be 114K, and reportedly 25% or so of the graduates took those jobs, so no small sample size. Just saying, even if accepted to Davis, Hastings, Pepperdine, and Loyola, your school won't land you six figures, your grades will. So why not take the best financial package? Easy to say I would choose the highest ranked school I got into until it really comes down to it. Hell, GMU accepted me and they are ranked as high as any Cali school mentioned here and the starting salary is 125k average for them, but moving is pretty stressful. I also found out that I would have to pay nonresident tuition for all 3 years unless I married a Virginia resident! But don't think a 50-80th ranked school with above average grades can't make 100k, they can. Let me know your decision when you get down to it.
Hey Joon, Thank you for the congratulations... I am going to Temple ASD. The school seems like a wonderful value even without a scholarship! Yes, I am a Hastings LEOP applicant, and I would be very honored to get into that program. Did you apply as well? The Temple scholarship offer came in the envelope with my acceptance. Have you received your physical envelope yet? As for my first choice--- gah, I don't know! You'll have to ask me in April :) Have you picked yours yet?
Oh, Congratulations to you! You richly deserve this wonderful news! Is Hastings it for you, or will you hold out for UCLA? How I would love to have the former acceptance... Ah, well, nothing for it but to wait!
Congrats on Hastings! Now the real fun begins: Hastings or Loyola :P
E-mail their Financial Aid Office and ask who you should contact for scholarship consideration. Once you've got the contact info, craft an e-mail and explain why Loyola is your top choice but finances are playing a large role in your decision. Of course, also mention why Loyola is perfect for you! i.e., home, programs, etc. Make sure to attach scans of your scholarship offers from Pepperdine/Pacific and say you're hoping Loyola can match in light of all these factors. Hope this helps!
Check it out. The offered me zero before, and I was disappointed because it is one of my top 3 choices. So I sent an email to their fin aid office telling them my offer from Pepperdine was too good to refuse. They gave the email of the scholarship guy. I contacted him/her with the same story. A week later I got an email that basically said to go to hell and I wouldn't get any money. Then today, about 3 weeks after that, I get a letter offering me 45K. Definite game changer. I'd send an email if I were you being Loyola is your #1.
I have to admit that Loyola gets the nod for me due to my interest in tax law and the summer llm in tax, but I still think paying 18k more at Loyola is a ripoff after my scholarships are compared. Even with equal scholarships, why pay 9k more in tuition for 3 years to go to an equally ranked school only 20 miles apart? At crunch time I'd still have to choose Pepperdine from the money. I'm gonna go visit both campuses in a week or two.
Check what the requirements are to renew the Loyola scholarship. Mine said top 10%, which is ludicrous. If I was in the top 10%, I might as well transfer to UCLA.
LOL, Not yet, but I'm hoping so! Loyola probably wouldn't have worked out for me, since I don't drive, so I guess I won't hurt their yield now. I can't believe Southwestern didn't give you money! But that Pepperdine scholly looks nice! How do you feel about the Conservative nature of the school? Hopefully we'll both get 'Dozo! They just put me on hold, which is slightly better than a WL...
I was recently accepted at Loyola with no money too. What did you say when you called them?????? Thanks.
Hi Joon, I would love to have a NYC option! Not sure which would be my top choice, though! Pepperdine is beautiful, and if the culture fits you well, I would jump at that scholarship!
Hi joonha, after reading your profile i was inspired to call Loyola too about scholarship money. maybe i said the wrong things but they basically said no to me, that i would have to wait until people started to withdraw and then i might possibly get some of the leftover money. Guess i won't be going there.... Is Loyola still your first choice? $15,000 is still a good deal. You've got some great acceptances so far, congrats
What's your renewal requirement for Loyola?
Thank you. I appreciate it. ;) thanks for the good luck on the other schools, hopefully it all works out so I have several choices to make. Congrats on your decision. That's fantastic. Have you visited the school, etc. I would love if you could message me your take on everything. I haven't visited yet but plan to down the line. :) hearts.
I'm definitely considering schools outside of Irvine, specifically Hastings and Davis. Both schools offered me renewable grants with no GPA/rank requirement to cover ~33% of tuition. That's certainly attractive considering that they'll both be cheaper than any other private school I'll get into. It's also super nice that I won't have to be concerned about class rank or GPA to maintain my scholarship/grant. Loyola is certainly a great option for anyone, but it doesn't have the factors that I'm looking for personally. I want to attend a law school that is: - part of a larger undergraduate institution - small entering classes, regardless of the size of the typical sections that students are divided into - not a commuter school Those are just some of the things I'm looking for. I'll check out one of Loyola's Student Host Programs within the next few weeks. Maybe they'll change my mind about everything. Feel free to write up a summary report of your visit, and I'll be sure to read it. :)
hey... someone just sent me this article... I don't think it should make much of a difference for you... especially as I don't htink you plan on transferring. But just a heads up...knowledge is always good. ;) http://abovethelaw.com/2009/03/are_top_loyola_law_students_ge.php#more
UCs tend to be holistic, and they like GPAs. If you had something impressive enough in your background to get into LEOP, UCLA might bite. Just sayin'. Good luck!
Going to have to make a decision soon on where to put my deposit, and looks like acceptances are going to be rare starting from now on. Right now it's between Tulane and Pepperdine. Took Loyola out of the running because of lack of scholarship money, and I also checked the campus out a few weeks ago and wasn't impressed. As for pepperdine, I'm a little worried about it being a conservative campus. Don't know how I will fit into that so I am going to go visit on visitor's day. you have a very impressive cycle so far, especially with the hastings acceptance. I would go there in a heartbeat. I also agree with the poster above, I think UCLA will take into consideration your GPA, I've heard they like high GPAs.
After I was accepted into Davis, they sent me an e-mail a few weeks later after completing my FAFSA and NeedAccess application. The e-mail said a preliminary review shows that I'll be eligible for 9k in renewable grants. Historically, applicants who receive this type of grant from Davis also get a similar offer from Hastings. Makes sense since they're peer schools and their applicant pool cross by 80%. Hope this helps! I look forward to your review of Loyola. :)
Your Loyola review was very informative and objective. I'm positive others will find it just as useful. Looks like you're going for sure? :)
that's great about loyola. ;)
i've on and off read your profile coz we have similar numbers and you applied to Hastings using LEOP. what was a turn off for you? just that you want to stay in la? and btw how'd you ask certain schools for more scholarship money? haha.. i too am a greedy bastard.
So I've been totally set on going to SCU, right? Lately the past two days my friends mentioned Loyola and how they prefer me to go there (because they're jerks and want me closer to home) and I'm starting to remember all the things I liked about Loyola and once again researching the school, etc. It's sooo bad for me to be having these second thoughts because SCU is perfect for me outside of Pepperdine. Terrible. But Loyola is currently out of the question because I'm pretty sure they put me on hold until after the seat deposit. But... admissions is too crazy. I wish it were easier and not so many second thoughts. My undergrad decision was so easy, it just felt right and I went for it. Now I have to actually think about the future.
At least they got back to you eventually. :tear:
Haha thank you. Like you, I am pretty excited to be going to Loyola (getting business cards is a nice perk). The Preview Day showed me that everyone cares about your well-being and success. Hopefully we will be referred to as the infamous 2012 class.
hey... so I got my Loyola waitlist today. I'm going to withdraw, it's just not the school for me. But, good luck with everything. I know you're super excited for Loyola and I'm totally excited for you. yay... law school is just around the corner, so exciting...
on loyola.. hope your bargaining tools worked on em.. haha
Hey are you on Loyola Law School's social website page?
Best of luck to you too! You have really great shots at the UCs and your chances at Loyola are strong--theyll love, love that high gpa. Im feeling really antsy about my chances at Loyola. The school would be perfect for me because I too would love to stay in LA. Hope we can both stay! Come on Loyola and UCLA! Btw, congrats on finishing your appssuch a heavy load off isnt it? :)
