7/17/09 - Since being put on the Waitlist at UCLA, I have grown a "waitlist beard." Know as a playoff beard in the NFL and NBA, a player stops shaving when his team enters the playoffs and does not shave until his team is eliminated or wins the title. One recent example is Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Roethlisberger and his beard led the Steelers to their Super Bowl XL victory, and later had his beard shaved by David Letterman on air during his appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Until I'm officially in or out at UCLA, the beard will stay. I hope to spread this ritual to all future law school applicants. May the Waitlist Beard thrive in coming cycles.

6/15/09 - After a lot of soul searching and a minor mishap with Davis' admitted student website, I finally decided on USD at 11:54 PM. A small excerpt from ATL about the new rankings explained my situation the best:

"Out west, we see that UC - Davis is still higher ranked than UC - Hastings. But can either compete with the new UC - Irvine and its free tuition? Or maybe you want to go to Arizona, work in Phoenix, and live in a state that is affordable and not likely to quake off into the ocean anytime soon?

These are all good schools, but to make the best choice you need to think more critically about where you want to practice once you graduate. Sure, the top five percent from these schools can go anywhere. But (and you can check my math on this) 95% of the students at these schools will not end up in the top five percent of their class."

I'm looking forward to staying in SoCal. With that said, here's to hoping UCLA admits me off their Waitlist! :)

6/8/09 - Not much new. Mailed in a LOCI to UCLA on May 21st from abroad, where I'm currently staying for the summer. I plan on sendinging in another LOCI immediately I fine tune it a bit more. Hopefully, I get in since I would attend UCLA without a doubt!

5/8/09 - Waitlisted at UCLA, sweet. :)

4/15/09 - Called home to find out that I was dinged from UCI like so many others on LSN. At least that's out of the way. :)

Sent deposits to both USD and UC Davis to buy some more time. I essentially have 6 more weeks before USD's second deposit on June 1st to make my final decision.

4/13/09 - Unofficially withdrawing from Hastings and Pepperdine (i.e., no e-mail sent). Hastings is a fantastic school with excellent job prospects, but the high cost of living and the meager grant I received is just much more than I'm willing to pay. Same story with Pepperdine, except the job prospects aren't anywhere as great in my opinion. If I wanted to work in Los Angeles, Loyola would be a much better option because of the greater number of firms that show up for their OCI.

Barring a Hail Mary from UCLA or UCI, it's between Davis and USD for me. I'm flip-flopping every other day. On one hand, I'd save a lot of money by living at home in San Diego. On the other hand, my employment prospects as a USD graduate would be limited to the San Diego region, where the legal market frankly isn't that large. I'd like to practice in San Diego, but am open to the entire Southern California region if it means a better paying position.

Tuition between the two schools are the same, but I'll be paying at least 30-35k more over the course of 3 years by living in Davis. Arguably, that's not too much. However, 30-35k in addition to 60k in tuition isn't exactly a few pennies here and there. The obvious benefit of Davis over USD is its name, small entering class (170 per year, and 35 students per section), and my gut feeling that I would simply enjoy my legal education at Davis more than San Diego. In regards to the last factor, you would think my decision should be fairly straightforward and easy. If only.

Feel free to comment, I'd love to hear everyone's opinions. :)

3/28/09 - Withdrew from Pacific, Arizona, and Loyola for various reasons via e-mail.

Arizona - way too hot
Loyola - absurd scholarship renewal requirements, top 10%
Pacific - limited employment opportunities outside of Sacramento

3/21/09 - In at Arizona with a $12,000 Dean's Achievement Scholarship, eligible for renewal each year by remaining in "good academic standing." Decision came by mail in a large white envelope. I'm looking to stay in California, so I'll be withdrawing soon.

In other news, I feel vindicated after UW's lost to Purdue in today's tournament game. :)

3/20/09 - Dinged at University of Washington. I suspected as much when I found out that other TLS applicants who also received a 3/13 decision date were rejected. I have no regrets applying, it was worth a shot.

3/16/09 - I spent this past Thursday through Sunday visiting some schools in Northern California. Specifically: Pacific McGeorge, UC Davis, UC Hastings, and the University of San Francisco. I understand a number of people are also in the same boat as me in deciding between some of these schools, so I'll go ahead and give a few quick thoughts about each. If anyone wants more information, feel free to PM me. I'm more than happy to respond.

UC Davis - I e-mailed their Admissions Office a week prior to schedule a tour and class tutor. Both the staff and the 1L student who gave me a tour were extremely inviting. Even though the building itself is a bit dumpy, I can honestly say that Davis had the best student atmosphere of all the schools I saw this weekend. I noticed everyone was upbeat, bright, and smiled a lot; it was like they weren't even law students! Needless to say, I really enjoyed my time visiting Davis. Note: their King Hall expansion which was supposed to be completed Fall '09 is now scheduled to be ready by Summer '10. The California budget crisis played a number on their plans.

UC Hastings - Since I didn't schedule a tour, I wasn't able to even step inside the building. Hastings is definitely serious about their security, which is pretty nice for anyone concerned about their location in the Tenderloin. However, I would say the Tenderloin was definitely no worse than any average neighborhood in America, so don't let Hastings' location scare you. On another note, the size of their two primary law buildings is certainly impressive. I would say both units combined are at least 4 times larger than UC Davis' law building. However, Hastings lacked the vibrance that Davis had. In stark contrast to Davis, I saw no students anywhere around the building. Davis had students sitting randomly around benches outside the building, in the hallways making small talk, etc. I would say Hastings certainly lives up to its stereotype as a major commuter school.

Pacific McGeorge - Pacific was the primary reason why I was even up in Northern California to visit the 4 schools. Their Legal Scholars Day provided travel reimbursement for my plane ticket and car rental. As a result, I'll always have a small place in my heart for them. This is not to say their law program is in any way inferior to the other schools I visited in any way. In fact, I would argue that McGeorge has some compelling factors in its favor. I was like their faculty a lot, they were quite enjoyable in the classes we sat in on. Also, the campus itself is super charming. Everything looks homey, the campus is very green, and everyone was super down to Earth. The Dean, herself, lives in a small shack right across from the on-campus student apartments. If my long term plans were to live in Sacramento, I can honestly say I would attend Pacific McGeorge without a second thought.

University of San Francisco - Of all the schools I visited this weekend, San Francisco undoubtedly had the best law building. Everything looked like it was constructed within the last 5 years and looked modern contemporary. Beyond that however, it seemed like a major commuter school and no one was really around/inside the building. In other words, it was essentially like Hastings. I did not apply here.

3/15/09 - According to the University of Washington's status checker, a decision on my application was made on 3/13/2009. Seems like a small group of people on Top-Law-Schools are also in the same group as me. It's going to be an interesting next couple of days, that's for sure.

3/5/09 - Dinged at USC. :P

10/24/08 - I uploaded the wrong version of my personal statement last night when I was submitting my applications through LSAC. Fortunately, all the schools were happy to update my application with the correct version when I contacted them by e-mail. Live and learn. :o

Other people have mentioned that Santa Clara Merit Awards come in a separate mailing -- so it isn't hopeless. You might still get $$$ there.

Congratulations

on your acceptance to Southwestern. Just opened mine up to find the Wildman scholarship as well. The overall amount for me was a tad lower though. Here's to more acceptances!

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

Good luck on your cycle. We're applying to a lot of the same schools and our numbers are somewhat the same range. Except mines a little bit lower. ;)

Thursday, October 16 2008 at 08:00 PM

Holler. We're basically the same in everything (numbers, schools) and I'm with you on UCI. What an opportunity. Our LSAT is above average right now so hold a good thought!

Thursday, October 30 2008 at 08:00 PM

I appreciate your existence. Good luck with your applications.

well try not to do that too much i hear it can cause blindness

Davis is a little tooo country-like for me. I know it's not really country, but it's still too boring. I do like to hit the clubs and what not. I also like the beach and rolling hills. Basically, I'm not a big fan of NorCal. Also, I just don't think I'd get into Davis. I think I'll barely get into Pepperdine, if at all. Crossing my fingers hardcore. Of course it would be absolutely amazing amazing to get into either UCLA/USC, but I doubt it'll happen. Thanks for the well wishes. I wish that more schools (especially the CA schools) would start hurrying up with their decisions. The wait is killer.

Saturday, December 06 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey, yeah the USD grant is renewable for all three years for a total of 90k. Best of luck with the rest of your cycle!!

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

Congratulations on Pepperdine and the scholarship. OMG I would kill for an acceptance there. That is one of my first choice schools. Fantastic. ;) I'm sooo nervous now that I know they've started acceptances.

Thursday, October 16 2008 at 08:00 PM

What's up man. I'm complete everywhere but applied at different times so I'm not compelled to go back and look for each specific date. It's a matter of days before I start hearing back. Congrats on Pepperdine by the way. Can't really argue with studying torts on the beach by the ocean.

"I am contacting you to let you know that we have received your application for admission to the University of California, Irvine, School of Law. We very much appreciate your interest in being part of next years class. The first review of pending applications has begun and you will be contacted regarding the status of your application as soon as it has returned from committee review." Based on this, I assume the next time I hear from them will be the decision, so I think I'm complete. Maybe not though.

Wednesday, November 12 2008 at 07:00 PM

I received the same email as the above poster. I checked my LSAC account and UCI did indeed request my LSDAS report, so I believe that is the complete email. The only thing I'm missing is a third LOR, but I doubt that bars processing of your application. Good luck on the rest of your cycle.

yeah
Sunday, November 09 2008 at 07:00 PM

not that worried about it. some schools don't issue complete notifications. i also imagine UCI will take its time with most people as they try to get a sense for how strong the applicant pool is.

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

I hope you're right about pepperdine. I'm getting so nervous. Waiting really stinks. haha. you're totally on for lunch if I get in. ;)

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

you should be a doll and send over some of your acceptances... more specifically your Pepperdine one. :P

on loyola!
Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

nice $$$ on loyola. I'm definitely hoping for a similar package from them. i hope the rest of the cycle goes well for u! but jus wondering, wat are ur top choices?

I'll be keeping an eye out
Sunday, July 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

on your cycle as well. Congratulations on Hastings! I'm going to visit there in the hopes that it will help extricate me from the WL.

hastings
Tuesday, October 28 2008 at 08:00 PM

you are on some roll with your schools. definitely rooting for you! hilarious santa clara story too.

i feel you
Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

I definitely hope I'll get as lucky as u! But it's interesting how u'd reconsider law school if u don't get into irvine. not even hastings or davis? i assume it's maybe because of the money? if so, i understand you cuz that's actually a big reason why i'd choose loyola over a better ranked school, in hopes that i'd be able to get some scholarship (on top of my wanting to stay in la which is crucial for me). I've actually jus decided to send in an app for irvine. I'm currently working on the "why uci" statement. it's so hard to think of something good! I wonder wat our chances are... :(

Thursday, November 27 2008 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on Hastings, from one LEOP applicant to another! Here's hoping you also get Irvine to bite :)

Congratulations on Davis!
Sunday, July 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

I just visited there yesterday, nice place.

still loyola!
Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

though i really really hope that such will not be the case, if it does happen, i would honestly still go with loyola. This of course isn't of course because loyola's better but because i want to stay in la both during and after law school. But i reeeeaallly hope that that will not be the case. But man, i'm struggling so much with that darn why uci essay. Would u mind telling me like wat kinds of things u wrote for ur's cuz I'd reallly appreciate it? u can pm me if u'd like!

Thursday, November 27 2008 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the well wishes, and congrats on a wonderful cycle! I sent you a message re: LEOP. Are you also thinking about Davis? It's not a great option for me since I am driving impaired, but I know it places quite well in the Bay Area and Sac. Are you leaning toward Hastings, though? LOL at Santa Clara and their refusal to let you withdraw!

Thursday, July 03 2008 at 08:00 PM

hahaha, I love the M&M story. I hope you based your personal statement on the M&M tournaments

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on Davis. ;)

Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

o my goodness, it does indeed cuz i jus received my acceptance from loyola and got NO MONEY, which makes hastings all the more tempting. But man, i really really wish i got an offer similar to urs. wahhh. This sucks. :(

Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

thanks for the info! actually, i called them last week and was able to get some money! Sadly, it's only $15k. But I plan to write them an email soon to ask for some more :) How's ur decision coming along? Will it be Hastings or a different school?

UCI
Monday, January 05 2009 at 07:00 PM

Good luck with UCI! Rumor has it that they will be sending out some more acceptances soon. What is your top choice if that doesn't work out?

Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

haha, that's actually very true. well, i'll be waiting to see where u'll decide to attend!

Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

but hopefully it'll be loyola despite the stringent requirement! haha :D

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

hi... i sent you a message. ;)

Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

the requirement isn't that bad! i jus have to be in the top 1/3 of my class. but hey, judging from how u went to visit the norcal schools, are u considering other schools besides jus irvine? wat abour loyola? haha, i of course ask about loyola cuz thatz prolly where i'm gonna go :D

Davis, Renewable Grants, & Loyola
Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

Seems like Davis is the school for you then! A good friend of mine goes to Davis also and he also mentioned like you in ur summary report above that the atmosphere is chill there. But hey, how did u receive the renewable grants? Did u find out through the financial aid summary report they mailed you? I sent my fafsa and the need access app jus couple days before the deadline and so did not receive my financial aid summary report yet. I guess I'll have to wait to find out if i received the renewable grants also? Lastly, imma go to Loyola's student host day this friday so i'll write up a summary report of my visit this weekend for u to see.

Tuesday, January 13 2009 at 07:00 PM

Snailmail letter on Saturday.

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

hey there... so howz your decision coming along... i saw you withdrew from several schools. Are you leaning towards Davis, Hastings, SD or Pepperdine right now? I don't know the exact prices but I'm pretty sure with your various scholarships and in-state tuition they do come out to be relatively equal.

UCI
Sunday, October 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

I heard from UCI via snail mail, it was just a two page document, one saying i was on the wait list and the other asking if i wanted to stay on the waitlist or not. Good luck to you!

Thursday, November 27 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey, Thanks for the kind words about the WL. Will you be at Hastings this Fall? 'Grats on your cycle!

Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:00 PM

haha, true true. How's ur decision coming along? Will it be Davis? ...or USD? :)

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

hey mister... howz the decision coming along. Davis or San Diego???? I'd throw in my two cents but you have enough people giving you advice so i'll just try to be supportive. ;) Good luck with your decision.

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

hahaha. oh you make me laugh. I'm writing you a response right now.

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

I visited USD today and now I know why it's a really tough decision. What a great school and the facilities are to die for. The people... loved them. It's finals week and still they were def. southern Californians... friendly and always smiling. I don't know about Davis facilities just from pictures what I heard from friends. But... you do have a really tough decision... good luck.

Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on the UCLA waitlist. that's fantastic... :) Howz the decision coming along? I just got into USD off the waitlist so I'm very likely headed down there for law school (unless I get into Pepperdine). :)

UC Davis
Sunday, November 16 2008 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on your amazing cycle! I'm currently WLd at Davis and am asking that if you don't plan to attend to please withdraw. Hopefully, this will make a space for me this Fall. Thanks!!
