Extra Curricular Information

Applied to a lot of schools. They don't have advisors for stuff like this where I come from so I cast a wide net. Also don't issue GPA's or official class ranks so I'm really flying blind.

First two years on transcript are a mess. Rest was Pretty good though.

Without a GPA virtually everything is a reach for me so I picked schools by location. I have been spending a lot of time in the midwest and south lately and quite like it there.

I picked Texas Tech & Willamette after talking to their reps at a law fair.

Categorized Schools as follows:

Lottery Tickets:
==========
U Penn(**)
Reaches:
======
Case, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati(*).

Possible:
======
FSU, UF, Texas Tech, Maryland, Rutgers, Tulane,
Wisconsin.

Probable:
======
Dayton, Marquette, Willamette.

(*) One particualr soft factor makes this a reach for me.
(**) Whoops. Picked this based on location. Friend of mine told me it was an Ivy League School. Looked up "Ivy League" on Wikipedia and finally discovered what it means. Put it in the Lottery ticket category.

Additional info & updates

Working last 10 years as software developer (3 years abroad, 7 years in U.S.)

11-07-06 - UPenn Cashed the application fee check so using this as complete date.

11/10/06 - Florida State Website indicates everything has been received so marked it as complete.

11/13/06 - Got email acceptance from Dayton. Assuming I can afford it - I'm going to law school. Dayton looks very good. No envelope yet so I don't know if there is any Financial Aid comming. I hope so. I would hate to get this far and run out of money.

11/16/06 - University Of Wisconsin Cashed check. Marked as complete.

11/16/06 - Cincinnati complete email.

11/23/06 - Ohio State Website says app complete and now before committee.

11/23/06 - Acceptance Letter from Marquette. 2 for 2 so far.

11/27/06 - Case Western Ordered LSDAS Report. I looked over my personal statement to them again and came to the stunning realization that it was crap. What can I say - it looked good at the time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

11/28/06 - Big Envelope form Marquette. No mention of any $.

11/30/06 - Second Cincinnati complete email!?

12/01/06 - UF Email. App complete and before committee.

12/05/06 - Email from Texas Tech that application is now complete.

12/12/06 - In at Rutgers Newark. Email notification. Letter to follow. 3 for 3.

12/13/06 - Changed Wisconsin Complete date. Got actual email from them indicating app now before committee.

12/18/06 - Rutgers Newark packet arrived today. $6K deans scholarship. Need to maintain 3.0 to keep it.

12/19/06 - The law school admissions fairy passed by my mail box again today leaving a letter from Maryland with "Congratulations" written on the front of it. I'm in. 4 for 4.

Just want to say that I'm floored by this whole thing. I figured that coming from a foreign school with no GPA I would be lucky to get in anywhere. So far that doesn't seem to be the case.

12/20/06 - Email Form Tulane. Application has been submitted to committee for review. Warned that decision can take some time.

12/26/06 - Letter From Cincinati. 5 for 5. Bit of a shock as it was the one school I was absolutely certain would reject me.

1/8/07 - Email From Tulane. Accepted. Mentioned Scholarship but not the amount or conditions. 6 for 6.

1/13/07 - Accepteanceform Wisconsin via snamil mail. Dated for the 8th. 7 for 7.

1/16/07 - Acceptances from Willamette and Texas Tech, both snail mail. Also got scholarsip info from Tulane. Cost looks as if it will exceede my budjet, even with scholarship. Texas Tech offered to treat me as in state, so thats good.

1/18/07 - Financial Aid information came from Maryland today. No Scholarship. Tuition for the first year (out of state) will be 28K. Way over my budget.

1/23/07 - Scholarship info from Marquette. $23K, have to remain in good standing (basically no strings attached). Waitlisted at Notre Dame. Put on provisional list. Indicated a decision will be made in late spring or early summer. Withdrawing my application since I need to know where I am going by March at the latest.

1/24/07 - OSU Website now says Decision. Don't know what the decision is yet but hope it's a good one.

1/25/07 - Phone call from Ohio State letting me know I've been admitted. Scholarship info from Cincinnati arrived today. 10K + In State Tutition = 9K in tuition. Not bad, considering they were a reach.

2/2/07 - Got two envelopes from OSU today regarding my admission and a tuition deposit form. No mention of any scholarship (so I gues that means no help). Doesn't mattter though, it's probably too good a school to pass up at in state tuition.

3/2/07 - Letter from Vanderbilt. Waitlisted.

27/2/07 - PFO from Penn. Nice letter. At leat it was polite.

04/14/07 - Still nothing from Case or Florida State though.

07/05/07 - PFO from Case Western.

I'm casting a pretty wide net with my applications too.

LSDAS Reports

Reports Ordered by everyone except Case and Texas Tech.

Case

It took them a few days to order my LSDAS Report, I think it was November 1st or 2nd, and I applied October 27th.

Congrats!

Congrats on your acceptance to Dayton. I'm hoping there's money in the envelope, too! Good luck, and maybe I will see you next year!

Thanks!

I was pretty pleased. Dayton actually looks good. I picked by location and it was one of my top choices. It's right where I will probably need to be and it has on site daycare (I have a boy due in April). Just hope the envelope has good news in it. If it isn't going to be any more than in state tuition where I am eligible for it then it will be one of the top three choices.

Nothing in the mail yet, but I'm confident they haven't changed their minds...I hope. :) It's a top choice for me.

I liked it at Dayton. Everybody was so nice and and they tried to make you feel at home. They do have daycare, which I need with two daughters. Congrats on your new baby.

Thanks! I haven't visited the campus yet, but I've only heard great things. I'm planning to go to one of the admit days next year. Dayton is definitely in my top choices.

UF

So UF emailed you and said you were actually complete?

You are right

I know. I applied to way to many school. I'm just hoping for the best, planning for the worst, and crossing my fingers that I get tossed in the wrong pile at Vandy (that would be the "accepted" pile)!!! Good luck again.

Thanks for the UWisco information... that sucks that they don't let you get in-state after one year. Either way it's still relatively inexpensive compared to any private school...

thanks!

Hopefully you'll have some good news from Case too. Looks like you're doing pretty well so far with your applications. Congratulations!

I'm waiting for my winning streak to come to an end soon by Penn and Washington & Lee. You're still doing great with the acceptances though, man.

Rock on

for Marquette. And that's some good dough, to boot. Hopefully that helps your decision. Never mind what all the crapsticks on here and LSD say about "higher school with shitloads of debt vs. a free ride at a non-highbrow school". Congratulations and good luck.

Cincinnati

When you say 10k + In State tuition, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that after using the scholarship you will end up paying 9k a year? I've applied to Cincinnati and am curious. Thanks.

Marquette Scholarship
Friday, February 10 2006 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on the scholarship from Marquette. Is it $23k per year or total?

Ohio State
Saturday, December 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on all of your acceptances! The scholarship from Ohio came several weeks after the acceptance. They told me over the phone that there are other scholarships available that you need to apply for. Best of luck!
