Extra Curricular Information

I've been out of college for 20 years. I work in the finance department of a healthcare company.

I was scoring in the 165-170 range on my practice LSATs. Yeah, I choked during the real thing. I had a panic attack halfway through the test...yikes!

LORs were from 2 attorneys I'd worked with, since the professors I would have asked are deceased now. I have no idea what was even in the letters that they sent.

I was really proud of my personal statement. I'm hoping that some of the admissions committees liked it so much that they couldn't bear to put it in the reject pile.

I have a few good soft factors in addition to the 20+ years of work experience.

I found a typo in my resum after I submitted the first two applications. I feel like I can admit it now since I've been accepted at those 2 schools and have already withdrawn. I guess it might explain why those two schools didn't come through with scholarships large enough to tempt me. I'm glad I noticed the error before I'd sent out all 13 applications.

Additional info & updates

11/29/06--Letter from Samford notifying me of my acceptance. No mention of money, but what a relief to know that I got in somewhere!!!!

12/06/06--Voice message from Drexel admissions congratulating me on my acceptance.

12/09/06--In at Mercer!

12/09/06--In at Oklahoma City, with $26K per year scholarship, must be in top 1/2 of class for renewal. Also invited to visit campus in late January, OCU to pay for hotel and meals and travel stipend up to $225 for airfare.

12/14/06--In at DePaul. $8K per year scholarship, renewable if a 3.3 GPA is maintained.

12/15/06--In at Cleveland State, with full in-state tuition for the first year, renewable with 3.2 GPA.

12/16/06--Letter from Drexel (dated 12/04/06) notifying me of admission and that I've been awarded $22,000 per year scholarship, renewable if I maintain a 2.67 GPA.

12/23/06--Received an XL t-shirt from DePaul University College of Law. I'm withdrawing from there. An $8K scholarship at DePaul doesn't amount to squat.

12/23/06--I am withdrawing from Drexel as well. Last year, people with similar numbers to mine were offered full scholarships. I think only getting a 75% scholarship at a law school that isn't even provisionally accredited yet just isn't worth the risk.

I'm really pleased with OCU and CSU and their scholarship offers. I like Mercer and Samford too, but have no idea if I'll get any scholarships from either. Right now, it's all about running up as little debt as possible.

I'm fully expecting to be rejected outright at Penn and Washington & Lee. A ding at Case or Loyola wouldn't shock me right now either. I wish Louisville, Drake, and SLU would hurry up and let me know something....yeah, I'm impatient.

12/26/06--In at Saint Louis University, scholarship awards determined in 3-4 weeks via separate letter.

12/26/06--In at Drake, $17,500 per year scholarship, renewal contingent on being in top 1/3 of class and availability.

01/08/07--E-mail notification of acceptance at Case, with formal letter of acceptance to come in a few days.

01/11/07--It just hit me that I need to get the FAFSA stuff done....I guess I'll tackle that this weekend.

01/13/07--Okay, I finally sent the e-mail to get my PIN for the FAFSA. I haven't received my W-2 from work yet, but I should have that by the end of the week.

Got a cool package from Case, they'll reimburse me up to $200 to come visit them, so I'll head up to Cleveland around Valentine's Day. I'm flying off to Oklahoma City on Jan. 25th to visit OCU and I'm looking forward to it.

01/20/07--In at Louisville. Very nice handwritten note at the bottom of the acceptance letter.

01/20/07--FAFSA completed. Sucks that you can only pick six schools at a time. I'll fill out the others later, when I get the SAR (or whatever it's called) back.

01/24/07--Waitlisted at Loyola. I'm withdrawing. I knew the acceptance streak would come to an end sooner or later. Now I'm just getting ready for the Penn and W&L rejection letters. Woohooo!!!!

01/27/07--went to OCU's event for scholarship recipients. REALLY liked it there. People were sharp, staff very friendly, had a great time! I left feeling much more impressed with the school than I expected.

01/29/07--Huge envelope from SLU with 2 thin pages, offering me $12K per year, must remain in good academic standing. I'll think it over, but I'm pretty sure I'll withdraw from there.

01/29/07--Withdrawing from Drake and SLU.

02/04/07--Still no word on scholarships from Samford or Mercer. I'll probably withdraw from both of them if I don't hear anything in the next week or so. OCU and CSU are definitely in the lead right now.

02/09/07--Rejected at Penn. The only surprise is that I'm not bothered by it. The rejection letter wasn't snotty, and I was completely expecting this news. I've still had an amazing cycle, so I'm pretty pleased with how things have turned out.

02/14/07--$3K per year at Louisville. What a bunch of crap. I'll withdraw once I think I can send them a response that's not full of expletives.

02/14/07--Phone call at work from assistant dean of admissions at U of L. I told him that I was incredibly disappointed with that scholarship offer. He tried to convince me what a great bargain U of L is no matter what. I wasn't buying it.

02/14/07--I was supposed to visit Case and CSU this week. Unfortunately, the weather wreaked havoc on my flight plans so I had to cancel the whole thing. Bad ending to a craptacular day.

03/02/07--Samford confirmed that I'm not getting a dime from them. I received a letter from the OCU Business School with a OCU Business Graduate Scholarship Tuition Waver Award. The chance to get a JD/MBA with almost no debt is too good for me to pass up. I will be attending OCU.

03/22/07--Much to my surprise, I was waitlisted at Washington & Lee. I expected an outright rejection. I won't be attending, but still....what a nice surprise.

Agreed! We've even got the full-time employment soft-factor, too. G'luck this cycle.

Hey there, looks like we have similar numbers....did you get an email from SLU today saying you went complete? That was really quick, I have been waiting a long time for that. Let me know! Thanks Andy

Congrats on CSU and your scholarship offer. With your GPA/LSAT, I think you will be getting many more scholarhips offers. Did you find out via email or snail mail?

Hi Mark, I never received any notification from CSU that I was complete, just the acceptance letter about a month after I sent in my application.

thank you

Loyola

Hey, congrats on the Case acceptance, I'm looking to hear from them too. I went to college in northern Ohio west of CLE and it is damn cold, but Cleveland is pretty cool. Sort of lame, but cool. Case is an excellent school, though. Congrats!

Harvard
Tuesday, October 31 2006 at 07:00 PM

To be honest I don't think I would have gone there anyway. The astronomical cost combined with the logistcal hassle of living in MA pretty much ruled iot out. I only applied because I got some fee waivers and had some left over money in my application fees budget. I thhrough an app at them on the off chance they might send me an acceptance which I could then use to leverage a better deal out of someone else.

Loyola...
Wednesday, September 13 2006 at 08:00 PM

...is holding out on both of us. What's your prediction?

Thanks
Sunday, December 24 2006 at 07:00 PM

Not my favorite, but I'll take one in the bag. Hopefully, I'll hear from KC or TU before long and my worries will be over. Looks like you've successfully knocked the shit out of the admission cycle this year. BTW, OCU seems pretty random mixed with your other schools. I'm assuming there's a pretty good reason for that. And what is your preference? Rock on.

$$$$$
Sunday, December 24 2006 at 07:00 PM

won't be an issue at OCU, it looks like. Ref. KC, what area did you live in there? My wife and I are going up Sunday to look around the city and presumtively house-hunt around Gladstone. Her brother lives in OPark, so we have some sort of safe haven close by. If you don't mind, email me and help shed some light on KC for me. If I don't get in there, the school may have to petition for an order of protection against me. I've got a pretty irrefutable argument for admission. Thanks in advance.

I haven't heard, but I'm expecting a waitlist too. I still can't make up my mind out of the schools I've gotten into. I'm really hoping for a surprise acceptance from IU-B. One can dream, right?

Drexel
Wednesday, August 16 2006 at 08:00 PM

Got a call from Drexel today, and a great scholarship offer. I see you got the same offer. What are your plans? I am 90% going to Drexel. That much money is almost impossible to turn down.

Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

I totally understand the panic attack. I almost threw up over the whole reading comprehension section and just walked out. I held it in though. My numbers are very similiar. How long did it take you to hear back from Case and St Louis? Best of luck with the rest of your aps!

sounds good!
Wednesday, January 31 2007 at 07:00 PM

Appreciate the input! Hope all goes well. : )

Thanks

The first was nice to hear, but this is better because I know I won't have to be moving too far away.

Wednesday, January 10 2007 at 07:00 PM

Yeah...don't really think I'll be getting any of that! I'm just glad to get the call! If all goes well, I can apply for FT...but first things first :) I'm sure I made quite an impression on the phone with the admissions rep...do most 20-somethings cry when they get that call? Just shows my enthusiam...right?

That's far from embarrassing
Monday, December 04 2006 at 07:00 PM

I'd do the same thing. My mom sounded like SHE was going to cry, she was so excited. Guess you never get over needing your parents to say they are proud of you. Of course yours were the first people you'd think of.

Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I would go ahead and send them you expletives! I must say, Jack Cox sure talked up their scholarship offerings to me over the phone like I was going to be on easy street during school. Funny, when I got the letter it was for barely half tuition. I'm not going to even bother negotiating. Have you decided where you want to go yet? Or are you going to hold out for W&L and Loyola?

Yup
Thursday, December 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I agree. If you are going to be somewhere for 3 or 4 years, the "feel" of the place makes a huge difference.

Re: Case
Monday, May 22 2006 at 08:00 PM

Thank you. I've considered that, and if I were 20 years younger that's probably just what I would do. I've discussed this with friends from my undergrad days who went to some fine law schools (Harvard, UVA, Vandy, Notre Dame) and they ALL told me that other than the top 14 schools (one even said just the top 6), it doesn't really matter where where you go as long as you do well. They've all been practicing for at least 17 years and are highly successful. I trust their opinions.

U of L
Monday, May 22 2006 at 08:00 PM

I think it's because U of L kept touting how much they have in scholarship money. I had heard how incredibly stingy they are with that, and it appears I heard correctly. Actually, it's closer to $8k or $9k per year after the $3k scholarship. And it's a great bargain if I plan on working in Louisville or Bugtussle, which I don't. How cheap did I expect it to be? I guess I expected a better financial offer from my hometown 3rd tier school. Thank you for your input.

W&L...
Wednesday, September 13 2006 at 08:00 PM

...still pending? I feel your pain -- Iowa is making me wait too. I'm trying not to be too optimistic, but I'd pretty much kill for an acceptance there. G'luck w/ your last one. :)

Thanks
Sunday, December 24 2006 at 07:00 PM

Knowing your still out there kind of takes the sting out of it. What douchebags. Oh well, it is what it is. I've got two more weeks to wait from Washburn, and I can't get Creighton to do shit except roll over to voicemail. If not them, it's either OCU or Tulsa. But you know me like an old lover, though, don't you? Thanks again for the condolences.

FASFA
Monday, January 01 2007 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the kind words. I really wanted UofL, but oh well. I have a question for you. I've been waiting to fill out the fasfa because like you said it only allows you 6 places. What happens if I end up going somewhere else? Do they let you fill out more schools later? I couldn't find it on the website.

Hey douche,
Sunday, December 24 2006 at 07:00 PM

Naw, I really did miss you (sob sob). That's awesome about OCU that the decision's finally been made. I think I'm gonna visit for Dean's Preview on April 5 and 6. I'll make sure it's good enough for my little boy. Hell, maybe even for me. Nothing's in concrete yet, so Washburn's the wildcard.

Good decision
Sunday, December 24 2006 at 07:00 PM

I just RSVP'd today, so I should be set with plenty of notice. I'll get ahold of you before long, and we'll plan it out.
