Additional info & updates

11-30: E-mail acceptance to Fordham arrived today-- woohoo, I'm going to law school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

12-2: It's my birthday today, and as a present I returned home to find my Georgetown acceptance. Happy happy joy joy : )

12-14: Grrr, still no word from Columbia, Penn or NYU...

12-15: Not the word I was hoping for! Just found out I was deferred at Columbia today. Ah, well, at least there's still hope.

12-15 (evening): Great news! When I left the gym, I noticed I had a call from a 215 number, complete with a message from Dean Meeker. Luckily I caught him still at work, even though it was 7:30, and he told me I was accepted... I was totally gushing like I'd won the lottery, I was so happy! I really love Penn... I'd probably still pick NYU or CLS because of location right now, but regardless, I know I will be at a school I love. Such a huge relief.

BTW, I did write the "Why Penn" essay, and I spent quite some time on it as the school is definitely one of my top three.

My plan from the start was to select a small number of schools and devote a lot of time on each application. I was totally kicking myself earlier today for not applying to more places, but I feel like my acceptance to Penn validated my strategy. I even read Kermit Roosevelt's novel while doing the app, just to get in the mood.

12-23: $15K merit award offer from Fordham--can't tell if it's per year or total, but either way it's not really enough to sway my decision. Also received a packet for admitted students day in January at G'town.

12-24: Official deferral letter from Columbia, stating that my application will be reconsidered in March. Luckily, my acceptance packet from Penn came today, too, complete with viewbook and Philadelphia magazine--they know me so well! I love when schools send extra stuff in acceptance materials... I'm pretty sure I went to my UG school because they sent me a free book : )

12-30: Deferred at NYU... as soon as I saw the small envelope, I knew it was bad news. Dated 12/19, postmarked 12/23 (well that certainly took long enough to arrive!). Decision to be made by late April; "may submit additional information."

1/4: Withdrew from Fordham. For some reason had a lot of anxiety about it.

1/23: Mailed LOI's to CLS and NYU. Luckily I've been crazy busy with activities lately, so lots to write about.

1/27-28: Attended Georgetown's admitted students days--the facilities are nice, but I don't think D.C. is for me.... although I'm waiting for Penn Preview on 2/17 before I decide for sure.

2/17: Went to Penn Preview. LOVE. Heading back for the March Admitted Students' Weekend.

2/28: Withdrew from Georgetown due to love for Penn.

3/16: Received email from Penn indicating no need-based aid. Not exactly a shocker, since I had to report my parents' income.

3/24-26: Went to Penn (again) for the Admitted Students' Weekend. Good times.

4/1: Waitlisted at Columbia. Probably withdrawing... still thinking about it.

4/6: Rejected at NYU -- BOO. Was hoping to skate through with no rejections (only waitlists), but alas, it's not to be. On the other hand, I was already leaning towards Penn, so now it's official: I'm packing my bags for Philly! The deposit will be in the mail after I get paid next week : )

Looks like you sticking to the east coast. Any interest elsewhere? What kind of law are you interested in? Good luck! Columbia would be great! (i have my fingers crossed for them as well)

Thanks!

Heard from G'Town today too... just waiting on my Big Three.

Thanks

for the compliments. I'm sure you're good for your big three. Don't worry about it too much.

thanks!

Thanks! I'm sure you will get in soon as well, numbers twin. Good luck on Columbia as well, I hope we both get in =).

i think with your stats
Monday, October 31 2005 at 07:00 PM

there is more than just hope for Columbia! besides, you already have some snazzy acceptances, so you're set! i was hoping you wouldn't mind letting us know if your deferment came via email or snail mail? it seems acceptances are by email and the rest by snail i wonder. that would definitely clear things up about my empty email inbox!

yay Penn!
Monday, September 26 2005 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on Penn! How exciting :-)

Godwilling, you should hear back from NYU soon. Look for a big yellow envelope.

he he!

happy happy joy joy. i forgot about that show and i am very content to see such a pop culture reference! i was hoping i could intrude and ask you how your deferral notice arrived. snail mail i presume? i think the ED yes's are gone and out and the rest of us can count on our mailboxes to deliver the news! since i am in Paris i think my snail mail "defer" or "no" is just gonna take that much longer. considering academia has dispersed for winter vacation i think the ED thumb-twiddlers can discern on their own what their fate is! just wanted to verify my theory with you. thank you.

Yea, I can't figure out why we got deferred too. It seems like they had a 170 cut off. Hopefully we'll both get in when March comes around...based on lsn numbers, it seems like we should both be game for NYU. Here's to hoping!

NYU, bleh
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

I know! What the hell is taking them so long? Every day I rush home from work to check the mailbox, but nothing. Duke, too, but especially NYU. We should find out soon!

Congrats from fellow NH alum
Wednesday, December 07 2005 at 07:00 PM

Big time congrats on Penn...you're a lock for Columbia when they get around to reviewing the deferrals. Everyone is complaining about NYU being slow, so I wouldn't worry about it. May the Samuel I. NH name take you to great fortune at CLS and NYU. Hopefully it bears weight for the both of us.

I haven't received any official word on info nights or anything like that, but I know they must be happening eventually :-) As for NYU, I think I may be in for a deferral or something. oh well, I'm kind of more excited about Penn right now anyway.

NYU WTF?!
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Dude, I'm tired of waiting for the mailman every day just to hear nothing! Admit me, reject me, just do something! MAN!

Gtown admitted students
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

I'm thinking about going to it. I'm going to wait like 2 more weeks or so to decide (I already have a place to stay there, so I would just need to somehow find the money for a plane ticket). If my cycle keeps going how its going, I may have no other choice! lol. Are you going??

NYU
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the sympathy. I think it's a mixed blessing though. I mean, I love NYU's academic program, but not so in love with NYC (I'm from the northeast and want at least a little change, too). So I'm not devastated. These deferrals are killing me though! I still have my money bet on you getting in ;-)

The letter was postmarked the 19th, but I just opened it last night (I was away from my apartment for a week b/c of Christmas). I'm surprised you haven't heard yet - any day now I'm sure. Good luck!

Penn

Yeah, I actually wrote the "Why Penn?" essay and it was killer. I'll spare you all the details, but the message was "I'm from the Philadelphia area, and my dad is living there alone with multible sclerosis. If I'm admitted to Penn, I'll be able to move in with him and assist him with his daily chores and take care of him." Given the deferral, I'm not putting a ton of weight into the theory that the "Why Penn?" essay matters as much as is thought (unless they are heartless bastards lol). Once again, though, I think my deferral is a mixed blessing. Though I would like to live near my dad and family and love the academics of the law school, I lived in the Philly area for about 15 years and would really like a change (maybe I'm the heartless bastard now lol). Anyways, best of the luck with the rest of the cycle. I'm 99% sure I'll be at Georgetown's admitted student day in January, so maybe I will see you there!

NYU

That NYU deferral makes no sense. Why are NY schools giving you such a hard time=). Anyway, you already got some great schools in Penn and GT... maybe I'll see you at the admitted student's day.

RE: NYU
Monday, December 05 2005 at 07:00 PM

I hope you're right about the yield-protecting! I like that POV better than the ones I'd come up with. Congrats on Penn-- it's fantastic that you got one of your dream schools!

GULC January Reception
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hey, I sent you an email.. I'm definitly attending!! Hope to see you there.

GULC
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hey, I don't know about you (okay, I do, since I read your comment), but I LOVED it there. It seemed like the perfect place for me! If I knew I could secure enough financial aid, I would withdraw all my other apps now and definitly attend. DC is my kind of a city, but I can definitly understand why you aren't so sure. In any event, I was wow'ed.

The Penn/Gtown question
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Either way, you can't go wrong. I visited Penn and loved it too, but for personal reasons (obviously, as choosing a law school should be personal!) there were things I favored about Georgetown more. After the reception at GULC though, I find it funny how much emphasis people are placing on the rankings in top 14. I was guilty of this before too, but in all reality, it is the FIT that matters, not the rank. I'm really glad we're both in at a schools we'd feel happy at. CONGRATS again!!

Thanks
Wednesday, September 28 2005 at 08:00 PM

for CLS condolences...I was just relieved to see it wasn't a rejection! I haven't withdrawn yet - but I am leaning towards it. If I decide to visit NYU, then I'll hold off on my CLS withdrawl until after my visit to NY. Need to make a decision one way or the other before next week. I'm sending in my NA finaid stuff and there's no point in sending it to CLS if I'm withdrawing!! Decisions!! Arrgghhh! Hope your Penn preview goes better than GULC's. Based on the LSD threads, it doesn't appear as though GULC wowed too many....

GULC :-(
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Guess we won't be future classmates as, even if I do wind up bein admitted to Penn, I can't see myself going there. In any event, I wish you ALL the best! I'm so glad you found a school you LOVE!!

Penn!!
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

I got in!!!!! I'm changing my mind a bit of the "I'd rather go to Georgetown than Penn" mindset. I have no idea why, but I am SO excited!! We may be classmates afterall this fall!!

Love your profile!
Tuesday, February 14 2006 at 07:00 PM

Very simialr to mine. Even the acceptances and waitlists. So Penn is looking more and more like your number one option. May end up being mine too. What's the deal w/ Columbia's reserve list, is it very unlikely to get an acceptance off of that? From what I hear, it's a long shot getting in after you've been waitlisted. Bummer. Let's keep our fingers crossed! Surprised about NYU though. You seem to have great numbers! I still haven't heard anything from them, really hoping I get an acceptance, can't deal w/ more waiting. Well, I'll be checking your profile. Goodluck!!!

Sunday, October 09 2005 at 08:00 PM

Heh... no, I wish! Well, I guess I would have been if I applied to University of Illinois : ) Eh, it was just a silly double meaning I thought of quickly (perhaps a little too quickly, as it seems like it's going to stick for some time). It's both short for "legal application" and meant to sound like "leg up" when said fast... like, I need to get a leg up to get into these schools!

Ah!
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

Sorry to hear about your rejection (their loss).. but great to know you're heading to Penn! I'm waiting on financial aid, but I have a very strong feeling we'll be classmates next fall!!

Wow, rejected at NYU, strange
Tuesday, February 14 2006 at 07:00 PM

I thought at least they'd give you a waitlist. I really dont get it. your numbers are very solid. oh well. Let's go Penn!! Sent in my deposit today by the way!! reserved that spot! If it's meant to be and I end up there I'll be lookin for you. I'll randomly scream out 'Legapp!" on campus, that'll be fun! Well, happy to see that you're all set in your ways. goodluck!

Syracuse

Now that my choice is made, I guess secrecy isn't that big of a deal... yep, Syracuse class of '02. I was a journalism major in Newhouse, and did a dual major in art history.

Thanks!

Sunday, December 25 2005 at 07:00 PM

I'll be at Penn! Can't wait to meet you (I don't know if we met at Gtown, its quite possible)

thanks...
Saturday, September 10 2005 at 08:00 PM

I've made my decision, and I'm going to Penn! I just see myself being happier and doing better there, What are you doing for housing?

So...
Thursday, September 22 2005 at 08:00 PM

We both went to the Penn Preview AND Admitted Student's Weekend and managed NOT to meet. Maybe, somehow, over the next three years, we can actually introduce ourselves! I'm also looking at dog-friendly Philly environments, so email me if you want me to keep you updated on what I find. I have your email from before, so I'll probably just send you a message there too, in case you don't come to LSN any time soon. Hope you are happy with your decision. I'm glad it's all finally over, although I'm still wondering what I'll do with all my free time now ... you know, without all the obsessing to be done!
