Extra Curricular Information

Independent research/thesis
-won a highly competitive undergrad grant from Pitt two times
-advising prof wrote letter of rec, which i didn't read
Semester at Sea
-did this the semester the giant wave hit the ship...
President of fraternity
-served two terms, national director of the fraternity wrote a very impressive letter on my behalf
Political work experience and internships
-interned with a PA State Senator
-campaigner for PA Dem Committee (worst year of my life)
Bigger Law Firm job for 1.5yr +
-did economic analysis/damage projections/antitrust litigation work at 200 some attorney firm based in NC/SC
Grade Addendum
-basically, my lowest grades were in the first semester of my senior year when my mother had some major health problems and I was going back to SC from Pittsburgh frequently. otherwise, had an upward grade trend from second semester sophomore year onward (3.6+ every semester).

South Carolina Resident, Pitt alum, same PS used everywhere about experience abroad, no extra or optional essays, had a noise ordinance violation citation that I disclosed (UH conditionally accepted me and wanted more paperwork if I were to matriculate. I wasn't going there, so I didn't bother.)

Point of interest to South Carolinians: USC has a long, annoying application, so be prepared to invest some time on that thing.

Additional info & updates

1-23
Already wishing I'd applied earlier, as the big state schools seem to be swamped with applications at this point.

Did the Emory online chat last night, which was too massive to be useful.

1-31
Big lag in "complete" notices and having HUGE problems getting to complete status with UF.

Just set up a visit/tour to Tulane for Feb, which I'm very excited about. Also headed back up to Pitt for a visit. Maybe fond memories of my undergraduate glory days will draw me back...

2-2
First acceptance... in at USC with money, which is very nice since I'm also a SC resident. Only have to remain in good academic standing to keep money, and according to letter, a strong 1L could bring more $$.

2-13
In review at UH.

Headed down to NOLA tomorrow.

Wondering what's going on with Pitt. It doesn't look like they admitted anyone who applied after thanksgiving as of yet.

In at CSOL via email. No mention of $$.

2-14
In review at Tulane

2-15
Snail mail packet from CSOL. Still no mention of $$.

2-18
In review at UGA

IN AT TULANE!!! notified via status checker, had a great time on my visit, i really could see myself there for three years and beyond. No money though...

2-19
In review at UF, so I'm finally complete there.

Rejected at UGA - their status checker is quite blunt. I was hoping to get on the waitlist, at least.

2-20
Waitlisted at Wake via email. Going to do what I can to try to get in, as Wake is somewhere I'm very interested in going.

In at Pitt via snail mail.

2-21
Tulane tote bag came today, and definitely no money, which is going to make my decision very difficult (114 at tulane or 30 something at USC??).

Of my remaining schools, I'm concerned most with getting into UF, since it's the only one besides UH I have a realistic shot at. Getting lucky at Emory or Mason would be pretty outstanding, though.

2-22
Received a letter from CSOL trying to sell the school, still no mention of what I need to see ($$$$)

Received email from Pitt about scholarship awards, if there is an award it will come 3 weeks after the acceptance.

2-25
Changed the Tulane Chiashu percentage to a non-Katrina year ('05 data instead of '06). Now that I'm in I don't need the confidence boost. Also of note, the Tulane tote bag makes a great lunch box.

Received a strange email from Emory about the status checker, but there has been no change in my status.

Pitt $$ came today, 19k a year, which makes it my cheapest option. 3.0 requirement to retain scholarship.

2-27
Rejected at GMU. Not a surprise, since, like many people, I was just playing the free application lottery. Snail mail letter dated the 25th.

3-3
Waitlist notification came from Maryland by snail mail. Thought it might have been an acceptance based on the size of the envelope... Maryland doesn't start making waitlist admissions until May, so I'm not sure I'll return the forms to stay on the list.

3-6
I tried to negotiate with Tulane regarding $$, using the offers from Pitt and USC, but I was turned down. Based on what I see here on LSN and from the Dean's response, it seems that all I needed to do was answer 3 more questions correctly on the LSAT to get a 162 and I would be looking at 15k a year... I like Tulane a lot, but the cost tends to moderate my excitement for the Green Wave.

3-10
In at Houston via email.

CSOL scholarship came via snail mail over the weekend.

3-13
Houston acceptance packet came in the mail. No $.

Hope I hear from Florida soon...

3-15
Big East Champs

LET'S GO PITT

3-17
Out of boredom, since I haven't heard from anywhere in awhile, I changed the Chiashu % to the 2008 USNEWS rankings.

3-25
Big windfall of letters in the mail yesterday. Rejected from Emory and Colorado by small, white envelope. In at Florida with larger letter. Just waiting on IU and the cycle is over.

I'm headed up to Pitt tomorrow then back down to Tulane the following week. I'll probably go to UF the week after New Orleans.

4-7

Looks like I'll be going to Tulane in the fall. After the ASD, I'm quite excited, and it was great to meet a lot of potential classmates. Unlike some other accepted students events I've been to, a large majority of those in attendance we're claiming they'd be at TLS in the fall.

I was very interested in UF, but they didn't accept me until too late. Now I have no money left to take further visits, and I can't really think of any reason to attend there over Tulane.

Applying to IU was a complete waste of thirty bucks. They didn't even cash my check until the last week of March, and as of today, I still haven't received one bit of communication from them - much less, a decision. I have a decent amount of family ties to IU, but inspite of that, I think I will actively root against them from here on.

4-11
I'll be at Tulane in the fall, and I'm ready to get the next 3 years rolling.

Still haven't heard from IU.

Still waiting on the Wake waitlist.

Updated my extracurricular info for posterity's sake.

Cycle went as I expected it (no strange acceptances or rejections), and it looks like Chiashu was fairly accurate.

Good luck to future applicants!

4-21
Letter from IU telling me to keep waiting, dated 4-16. Apparently, they have more applicants than ever, or something...

I'm too proud a Pitt alum to go to PSU under any circumstance.

good luck with your cycle. Care to drop a hint as to your true identity? What was your project on?

good luck!

UF is unbelievable. I really like it here for undergrad. I applied to a lot of good schools so I don't know what I'm going to do about Law school, but we will wait and see. If there is one thing I would say about UF to sum it up is that it is underrated, and very inexpensive.

Thank you! That was what I was hoping to hear. I'll let you know if I have any other burning questions. Best of luck with all your apps! (Especially to a fellow former Greek president.) You have any preferences at this point?

I'm purposely staying neutral at this point because I don't want to get my hopes up for any one place. But, I already know I like Indiana and Oregon (and am an OR resident) so I guess those two *might* be slightly ahead in my mind. There's something about SC that appeals to me though, so we'll see how admitted students day goes. Congrats on your admittance, by the way. Especially the money part. I'm sure it's the first of many.

No news yet...from anywhere. I'm in that frustrating middle ground so I have no idea where I stand. Tulane is a great school, btw.

Wake and SC

Hey, I'm still waiting on Wake and SC. Any idea which one you'd choose between the two?

Wake and SC again
Tuesday, February 05 2008 at 07:00 PM

I visited Wake over the summer and love the campus and school. I love Wake's small size and its Elder Law program. What are your thoughts on Columbia as a place to live and study? Where do most SC grads end up?

Tulane

What did the Dean say when you tried to negotiate for the scholarship? Was it that there was no money left and you have no chance or was the possibility left open? Thanks a lot. I too am concerned about paying full price at Tulane over some of my cheaper options.

Dude I think you forgot to list \"sucking at Texas Hold Em\" in that massive list of EC\'s...must have been an oversight. I figured I\'d take a look and see if you were on here, looks like we applied to a bunch of the same schools. Enjoy your debt, it\'ll be worth it to not be forever confined to SC.
