Additional info & updates

I think my LORs should be pretty good. I'm not very happy with my Personal Statement, though. Several people said it's all right, but I remain unconvinced. I'm hoping my numbers will be enough to get me in to some of these places, as I really don't feel like my application as a whole is that good.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
11.1.05--Oklahoma, oddly enough, says I have to put down a $100 dollar deposit by December 9 to reserve my place. We'll see how that goes.

11.5.05--Georgetown came in a small envelope with a handwritten note at the bottom congratulating me and inviting me to visit.

11.7.05--Talked to OU about the crazy deadline. They told me I should just go ahead and send in the hundred dollars now to reserve my seat and to include a note letting them know when I'll let them know if I'm coming. I don't think I'm alone in thinking that this is crazy, so I doubt I'll respond.

11.14.05--Letter from Chicago offering me a fee waiver to apply. Damn near had a heart attack when I saw the fat white envelope that said "Welcome to The University of Chicago Law School" on the front.

11.18.05--Received $8,000/$6,000/$6,000 scholarship from OU.

11.23.05--Very nice e-mail from WUSTL saying I'm in. Letter forthcoming next week and scholarship information coming in January.

12.1.05--Cornell online status checker now says "Decision" and gives me a link to the "Admitted Students Discussion Site." I hope this means good news is coming!

12.5.05--Received a phone call from Dean Trujillo at Virginia during class. Tried returning call but he ended up leaving for the day. I assume that this means good news, though, so I'm marking it as accepted unless I hear otherwise.

12.6.05--Haven't talked to the Dean yet, but received a letter in the mail offering admission to Virginia. Wahoo!

12.7.05--Received email from GWU letting me know of admission.

Received phone call from Dean at Illinois. Very nice conversation. Told me about admitted student days, invited me to talk to students or faculty, and offered me a full-tuition scholarhsip.

Also, sent letter to OU to decline admission. They wanted me to send them a hundred dollars by Friday to save my seat. For me at this point, that's just too much too early.

12.8.05--Email and letter from Cornell, as well as letter from Wisconsin!

12.14.05--I'm in at Michigan!!! Dean Zearfoss wrote a very nice and funny note complimenting my personal statement and the letter came with a cool folder and other assorted materials.

--I'm past the halfway point now, and I am absolutely floored. I did NOT expect to do this well. I really don't know what to make of it.

12.19.05--Indiana acceptance came in a Priority Mail envelope. They're offering the Dean's Scholarship, which is $42,000 over three years. They said I'm still under consideration for the Chancellor's, though, so we'll see about that.

12.21.05--Email from Iowa notifying me of acceptance.

12.22.05--Letter in large manila envelope from NYU. Holy smokes.

12.27.05--Got home from visiting family and found acceptance from Vanderbilt, dated 12.21, waiting for me.

1.07.06--Got home from another long trip to find acceptance from Boston College. Also received a Merit Fellowship from Iowa. Full tuition scholarship as well as a guaranteed research assistant position during 2L and 3L.

1.17.06--Phone call from Anne Perry, I think it was. I was a little too weak in the knees to remember names or to have a coherent conversation. In any case, I'm somehow in at the University of Chicago.

1.19.06--Today I got a letter from GWU giving me the Presidential Merit Scholar award. 15,000/yr renewable for all three years.

Also received a BIG folder from Vanderbilt, entitled "Obiter Dictum." Looks like it has lots of general info about the University and the city of Nashville.

1.23.06--Got a "hold" notice from Harvard. Not sure what I'm going to do about that.. We'll see.

1.28.06--Washington awarded me a $25,000/year "Scholars In Law" scholarship. Sweet.

2.2.06--Dinged at Columbia.

------------------------------------------------
Well, that's everybody I guess. I do not have any idea where I'm going. I'm visiting some schools next month, and my wife has only just begun hearing back from graduate schools. Her results will obviously figure into mine. Apologies to those waiting on certain schools; I just can't withdraw from many at this point.

2.27.06 -- Withdrew from Cornell.

3.1.06--Shocked to find a 24k scholarship offer from Chicago in my mailbox.

3.6.06--$18,000/year from Vanderbilt.

3.11.06--$5,000/year from Boston College

3.20.06--$17,000/year from Virginia. That makes things difficult. :-)

3.21.06--$18,000/year from Michigan. Wow.

4.8.06--Barring some cataclysmic event, I'm going to be a Wolverine next year! I'm going to send in my deposit and withdraw from all other schools next week.

5.12.06--Got a letter from Harvard offering me the chance to sit on their waitlist for an unspecified period of time. No thanks.

WUSTL Waiver
Wednesday, September 07 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hey, a comment! Neato. The WUSTL fee waiver was automatically waived when I applied online. The same thing happened with Columbia and NYU. Once you add it to your shopping cart, I believe, it just shows up as $0. If anybody else visits, feel free to leave more comments!

Cycle correction
Wednesday, September 28 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hey Sooner, why don't ya change your admissions cycle to 05-06. You'll probably get even more comments if you show up in the right cycle! Be sure and update with received/complete dates. I'll be watching :-)

Nope
Wednesday, September 07 2005 at 08:00 PM

They have ED, but I applied for regular admission. I'll probably call them tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks for the congrats. :-)

nice

saw you on LSD and on here. congrats on getting into OU, but w/ your numbers it was a no-brainer. let me know about your correspondence w/ OU and the dec. 9 deadline. i find that interesting.

I'd Sooner be at GTown

Maybe USC's thrashing of OU in the Orange Bowl last January still has everyone's heads spinning. =P Good luck!

WUSTL Completion
Monday, November 14 2005 at 07:00 PM

Did you ever get anything from them saying your app was complete? Thanks for the help, and congrats!

WUSTL Notification
Wednesday, September 07 2005 at 08:00 PM

Nope, I don't have such a notification on file. I ended up making the complete date and the decision date the same to note the lack of a complete notice. Hope that helps!

Man!!
Wednesday, September 28 2005 at 08:00 PM

You're cleaning up this cycle! Are you leaning towards any particular school right now? Any plans of withdrawing from any? Gool luck the rest of the way! Jess

Redzone:
Wednesday, September 07 2005 at 08:00 PM

Yeah, right now I have about three schools that I'm leaning towards. I'll let you know what they are later in the cycle... ;-) I'm not planning on withdrawing from any at this point because I'm still waiting for my wife to hear back from the graduate schools she applied to. Once we start getting that info back in, we can start making decisions.

Iowa
Saturday, September 10 2005 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on the scholarship! Is there a requirement that you stay in the top 25% of the class for it to be renewed?

Yup
Wednesday, September 07 2005 at 08:00 PM

Indeed there is. You have to be ranked in the top quarter of the class as well as complete this 10 hr/week research position. Given what I've heard about the relative arbitrariness of law school grades, that requirement makes me mildly nervous.

Ha ha ha
Thursday, September 22 2005 at 08:00 PM

Yeah, that's what I was going to say, but without so much authority. It's a deferral, not a waitlist, and god knows in the OCD-land of LSN, it matters. ;-)

BTW
Thursday, September 22 2005 at 08:00 PM

Holy congrats on Chicago, NYU and a ton of other awesome acceptances.

Thanks
Wednesday, September 07 2005 at 08:00 PM

Yeah, I just realized I should have put "deferred." Thanks for the input. ;-)

WOW
Tuesday, October 04 2005 at 08:00 PM

Huge congrats on all your accpetances and $$$ offers!!! Any idea where you'll be heading??

wow
Sunday, October 02 2005 at 08:00 PM

what a great freakin' cycle. congrats, bro.

Congrats!
Tuesday, February 14 2006 at 07:00 PM

Similar stats. waiting on NYU. What you think did it for you with NYU...Hating the wait!

Don't know
Wednesday, September 07 2005 at 08:00 PM

OU Waitlist, I sent them a letter on 12.7.05. Good luck with them. bpelcs, I have no idea what got me in to schools like that. As I said above, I really did not think my application was that strong. I think that I must have gotten a huge boost from applying relatively early. That's the only thing I can think of. Good luck with NYU!

So,
Wednesday, September 28 2005 at 08:00 PM

have you come to any decisions or are you still waiting on your wife's acceptances? Have you been able to visit many of your choices? (I thought Mich and Vandy were both great...heading to UVa next week) Some great $$$ offers! Tough decisions, huh?

Yup
Wednesday, September 07 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hey redzone. Yeah, I've visited Michigan and Virginia. I definitely liked Michigan a lot more, but it's hard to make a decision because of the wife. I hope to make a final decision in the next week or two. Y, I already withdrew from Iowa. That's what the W means.
