Additional info & updates

sent = when i clicked "transmit" on LSACD.
received = when the school received the paper copy of the app (not the report), according to LSAC.
complete = when i received notification that my file was complete (or, in the case of snail mail, the date on the letter)

waivers: columbia, NYU, chicago, michigan, penn, gtown, USC (with EA invitation).

some people are saying that penn automatically deferred people who did not write the "why penn?" essay. i don't know the extent to which this is true, but it wasn't for me: i didn't write one and still got in with not exactly stellar numbers for them. (and on that note, the only optional essay i wrote was a diversity statement, which i sent to any school that expressed interest in one.)

i must have done something REALLY amazing in more than one previous life to get that phone call from new haven...

i assume the harvard hold is more like a deferral than a WL for LSN purposes.

random request: if you withdraw your application after receiving an acceptance, please don't change the status to "withdrawn" (or, change it back to "accepted" at the end of the cycle if you're using LSN to keep track of your applications). it'll be far more useful to future applicants to see that you were accepted than that you withdrew at some point. thanks! :o)

in a letter dated 3/9/05: $64K scholarship to chicago over three years. very generous, but i can't be swayed from yale.

and thus my admissions season comes to an end. that was fun. :o)

I don't get it either. I was basking in the fun of being #1, due to my (as of yet unrequited) love for Yale. I hope those complaints aren't representative of the type of petty competitiveness we'll face in LS.

Hi

Friday, June 10 2005 at 08:00 PM

SO happy to see that the rumor was true! (Yoda must be so proud!) I know Yale is never a sure thing for anyone, but I've had a feeling you were going to get in for a long time now - you just seemed like someone who should be going to Yale. And now (I'm pretty sure) you will! :D (For now, I'm going to keep holding on to the slim hope that I might be joining you there... at least until they tell me otherwise.)

Congrats Pookie!

Congrats on Yale!!!!! I'm so happy for ya. Looks like we'll be switching coasts =)

Thanks
Monday, May 23 2005 at 08:00 PM

I appreciate your withdrawls to give those of us who are lesser qualified a chance at these schools. Congrats on Yale. At least you're not like one of my LSAT teachers who scored a 179, got a full-ride to Georgetown and doesn't even want to be an attorney!

What is the secret?
Friday, June 24 2005 at 08:00 PM

TDPookie1, what made your application so strong? Please don't get me wrong, but your numbers are not that impressive. Is it really the kick-ass PS helped? Did you have any extraordinary experience? Strong LOR?

I've been loading your page about 200 times per day, myself. Probably 10,000 or so of those views were me. Sorry!

I'm a middle eastern femaile too.. i was wondering what country are you orginally from?

why non-urm?
Monday, June 27 2005 at 08:00 PM

Pookie, congrats on all the acceptances. Question though, why do some people feel like if you are not Hispanic or African-American, etc - that you are not an URM? I say that you are, and that I am too. Middle Easterners would fall under the "other" category.... not too many schools have more than 0.5% in the "other" category, yet I am sure that the "other" category accounts for more than 0.5% of the population. Also, without looking up the latest census and employment statistics, I would be willing to bet that the % of middle eastern lawyers versus the % of middle easterners in the population has a similar (but obviously not as big) disparity as Hispanics and African Americans. How can we not be a URM?? This may not apply to you, because perhaps you never felt this way, but the general feeling I get from reading these posts, etc - is that some people may feel like their accomplishments are diminished in some respect by listing themselves as a URM. That is ridiculous - your numbers are impressive - period. I'm sure your application package was equally impressive - otherwise, you would not have gotten in. Congrats again - you are the total package, URM or not.

re URM
Sunday, May 01 2005 at 08:00 PM

i disagree about persians being underrepresented, though i haven't found stats to support (or refute) my opinion. (based on my personal experience, out of my circle of persian friends, the very vast majority are in law school, most of the rest are in med school, and a couple are in business school or a non-law or -med doctorate program. to some degree, that's probably self-selecting, but it is remarkable how many of us are going the law route.) if nothing else, you might notice that a large proportion of iranians (in my case) have advanced degrees and are generally well off. (on another personal note, if i weren't going to grad school of some sort, i would be the first person in my extended family in my generation or the one before it NOT to have an advanced degree. two BA's would make me a black sheep.) we're not the people that URM policies were meant to benefit. so you checked "other" in your apps? i consider myself to be caucasian in terms of race, and that was the box i checked. i did write a diversity statement, even though "i'm the child of immigrants" isn't particularly diverse.

Congratulations!
Wednesday, March 09 2005 at 07:00 PM

Outstanding! Congratulations on your acceptances. Best of luck at Yale!

re: So not white
Monday, April 04 2005 at 08:00 PM

I actually had a conversation with the president of the United Negro College Fund about this topic. He said that he considers those of Egyptian heritage to be African American. In fact, when Napolean went to Egypt he was amazed at how dark skinned the Egyptians were and was unwilling to accept the idea that blacks would have contributed to Greek and Roman culture, so he said that while black on the outside, Egyptians had an inner layer of caucasianness. That said, I wouldn't put Lebanese or Persians in the same category.

one more thing
Monday, June 27 2005 at 08:00 PM

most of the iranian immigrants to the US of our generation are born to parents who fled the Revolution. i myself am indian but its a similar story: in those years it was the middle classes and professonals who could afford to flee and start over. the AA issue is (should be) a profoundly historical one and so, numerically represented or not, the reason for--and condition of--being in the US is quite different. i don't think AA is to compensate us for personal attacks ("sand n**ger") as much as to help those discriminated against "structurally" (ie: collectively). of course, secret detentions of US citizens of arab and persian descent recently might be considered "invidious" one of these crazy days. oh and congratulations on your acceptance to that school in connecticut and senate race..... : )

hello
Thursday, September 08 2005 at 08:00 PM

As a fellow Middle Easterner, I was wondering what kind of approach you took in your diversity statements. I think I'd have a lot to offer to some law schools in terms of perspective because of my background, and was hoping to get an idea of how you might have communicated your life experiences to the schools you applied to. E-mail me back if you can! thanks, and congrats on all your acceptances!
