Additional info & updates

I've been placed on hold at Thomas Jefferson. Apparently there is more likelihood, according to the letter, that hold people get in than waitlisted people. Whatever, man.

About 3 weeks ago Hofstra sent me an email with info for admitted students and congragulating me on my acceptance. Since I had not received an official decision in the mail at that time, I decided to call. They said the email was sent to a bunch of applicants by mistake. My luck. Last week they waitlisted me, which surprised me because of my numbers. They probably did it because they felt bad about their mistake.

OKCU Law accepted me, but as part-time. Sent them an email yesterday (03/12/07) saying I wanted to be full-time. They granted my request. I've only applied part-time to schools because it is "easier" to get in that way. They keep sending me letters regarding their JD/MBA program and want me to apply.

Today (03/13/07) UDM accepted me into their SSP (Special Summer Program). Whaterver. I'm gonna try to get out of it and see if they'll accept me without going to their program.

Oh, Cooley accpeted me a while back and gave me a scholarship.

Been reading Law School Confidential and it provides great insight into the law school experience. Wish I had picked it up sooner. I am worried about what the author says regarding school's placement records. It states:

"What I'm about to say is probably the most controversial thing you'll find in this book. Few professors or law school placement officers wll ever admit this to you (for obvious reasons), and no other 'how-to-do-law-school' book will tell you this either...Brace yourself. If your goal is to work for a firm, and you don't get into one of the top fifteen to twenty law schools, and you are not interested in practicing in the city, state, or region where that non-top-twenty law school is located, you're better off reapplying and trying again. Refuse the offers you get from regional law schools, and try again next year. If you don't believe me, check the numbers yourself."
Pretty scary stuff and something to consider when placing a seat deposit for a school.

03/14/07 Called Florida Coastal because I noticed I didn't mark the 07-08 year on the app. They said I've been waitlisted.

03/15/07 Received an email from University of Arkansas at Little Rock for admitted students. One similar to Hofstra's email. Called them to see if it was a mistake, since I have not yet received an official admissions offer in the mail and they said that I have been admitted and that I should receive the letter soon.

03/17/07 Received official acceptance letter from UALR.

03/19/07 Accepted at Widener.

03/30/07 Called John Marshall to see what the status of my app was. They said a decision had been mailed on the 15th along with a bunch of other stuff regarding financial aid and such. Apparently my mailperson is doing something wrong and not delivering my stuff from Marshall. Luckily the office of adm. told me I was accepted and I attended the admitted students reception just in time. I wonder if there are other stupidities USPS is also doing. Monday I'm calling all schools that still haven't sent me anything.

*So I initially applied to John Marshall as a part-time student in hopes of at least getting in that way since I didn't think they would accept me as a full-timer, and today I called wanting to know to whom I should write a letter requesting for full-time status. To my surprise, they entered me into the full-time status right there and there!! Very kick-ass!

I'm looking at boredfirmlawyers advice and you simply can't afford to have a negative attitude like that if you want to catch any breaks. You can certainly start out at a low paying job, become known as a good lawyer, get some valuable experiene that you wouldn't have in the first place at a big firm, and use that to get the higher paying associate position a few yrs down the line --- but you have to genuinely enjoy the work. I'm in the paralegals dept at a big firm -- I talk to basically everyone I see -- I don't let myself get bored. That's not to say everything comes easily, but I do work to earn and maintain trust and connections. I agree with the bit about regional / national schools. Maybe the guy just needs to work w/ ppl he likes, i dunno --- also, be sure you LIKE research and writing --- those should be considered fun before you get into it.

Thanks for the advice. I realize that NYLS is probably the highest ranked school I've gotten into, but their AAMPLE program doesn't exactly sounds promising since its success rate is really low; therefore, the chances of me actually starting there in the fall are pretty low. Plus, I'd rather head south for law school--the Chicago weather is too much for me! Looking at your profile, it appears as though you can sympathize with that :)

Yeah, as far as around 100, I was just referring to being a Tier 3 school according to U.S. News and World Report. Since they stop ranking the Tier 2s at 100, it's hard to put the schools in Tier 3 in a Cardinal order. Also, Arkansas has tettered at the Tier 2 status on a couple of occasions, so I just assume it's toward the "top" of the Tier 3 schools. And yes, as far as I understood the admissions people, all out-of-state applicants who are accepted are offered a tuition waiver to the amount of in-state tuition.

Dude! I think it's great that you metioned scouting. I am an eagle scout too. I had so much fun. I think you are great for being an assistant scoutmaster. That shows a lot of comitment. I think that helped you.

Check out my page! I am scared! I haven't heard back from 3 schools, and I've been waitlisted at 4, rejected at 3. Any advice, ANYONE, on what I should do?? I am currently requesting information on Master Degree programs, and I really like one at Keele University in England, BUT I have my heart set on Law School! I documented activity pretty well on my page, and hopefully some insight will help me out.

Hi- I'm not sure if you still check this, but could you tell me more about your experience with your application to Thomas Jefferson? Turn around time, their eventual decision, experience communicating with their admissions office, etc? Would really appreciate it! Best regards, Chris
