Extra Curricular Information

since my cycle is more or less over, i thought i'd add some more info about myself before i forget about LSN entirely. this site was really useful to gauge my chances at different schools -- of course, i ignored all of that info and applied to a bunch of reach schools, but i had to try! anyway, i hope that my profile will be helpful to some law school applicants in the future.

i worked at a law firm in chicago for a year between undergrad and law school.

during college, i was a reporter/editor for the student newspaper, and interned at a magazine (my job was NOT as fun as LC's job at teen vogue). member of alpha sigma nu and phi beta kappa; also did SLU honors program. received a special communication department award upon graduation. that's the main stuff. oh, and i studied abroad in madrid for a semester.

Additional info & updates

Scholarship $$$ is the amount I will receive over 3 years.

Welcome to my mini admissions blog.

12/13/06 -- My first law school decisions arrive: acceptances at W&M and DePaul! It feels great to know that I'm in somewhere :)

12/20/06 -- Just got a phone call at work from an admissions officer at Loyola Chicago congratulating me on my acceptance. She said letters will be sent out after the 1st of the year. I also noticed that I am the first person on LSN to post my acceptance to Loyola Chicago.....yeah I am a huge dork. Done procrastinating....back to work!

12/25/06 -- Returned home after the holiday to find a little Christmas present from DePaul in my mailbox....a law school t-shirt. Unfortch, they did not inquire about my size and sent a large. I am giving it to my boyfriend. I am crossing my fingers for more big envelopes in January. I wonder if adcoms will do anything this week?

12/26/06 -- Big white envelope from Loyola Los Angeles. The letter said scholarship info. would follow later. They also gave me a sticker, but I haven't decided where to put it.

1/3/07 -- Letter from Loyola L.A. with a scholarship info. and invite to scholarship reception in April. Apparently the Catholic (specifically, Jesuit) schools like me....

1/6/07 -- Clearly, I jinxed myself in that last post, because I got a rejection letter from BC today at my permanent address (not sure why they sent it there). My mom called and then opened it on the phone with me. It wasn't at the top of my list, so I'm not that upset....but it does make me a little nervous about the schools I'm still waiting on.

1/11/07 -- I happened to check my umich status thingy today....and it went to decision! I look forward to receiving a rejection letter within the next few days.

1/16/07 -- Medium-sized white envelope from U of I. Basically, my choice right now is between U of I and W&M....

1/18/07 -- Michigan letter finally came. I'm glad they expedite the rejection letters just like the acceptance packets (kidding, obviously). At least I got an acceptance somewhere this week.

1/19/07 -- GULC status checker changed to decision. At least now I know not to expect anything for about a week! Boo to status checkers.

1/22/07 -- Placed on the "Provisional List" at Notre Dame. The letter said that you can submit supplemental materials, and that they will begin to review our files again in April and May. It came in a thin envelope, but I could tell before I opened it that there was more than one sheet of paper in it.

1/28/07 -- Came back to my apt from a weekend away to find two small envelopes: one from GULC (rejection, finally) and Kent (acceptance, with scholarship). Kent offered me a full-tuition scholarship for the first year, renewable for $20,000 per year thereafter.

1/29/07 -- Came back from dinner with friends to find an e-mail from northwestern with instructions on how to access my decision letter. Rejected, but not surprised! At least the margaritas made the bad news a little easier to handle.

1/30/07 -- Waitlist at Vanderbilt in small envelope. SLU acceptance in big white envelope with a handwritten note from the asst. dean of admissions acknowledging receipt of my 1843 Scholars (full tuition scholarship) application. No bad news today!!

2/22/07 -- Letter with SLU scholarship info. Apparently I will not be an 1843 Scholar after all.

3/02/07 -- WL at Emory in thin envelope. Only pending at 4 more schools....

3/05/07 -- UVA status checker changes to decision. I used to get so worked up about the status checkers, but I don't really care anymore. I am going to the U of I admitted students weekend on Friday....

03/09/07 -- UVA rejection in thin envelope. Shocking. U of I was great. It's probably my first choice of the places I'm in right now, but I am still deciding.

03/27/07 -- USC rejection in thin envelope. Not that surprised, but I was kinda hoping to add to my waitlist collection! I visited Vanderbilt yesterday -- went to a class, met with an admissions counselor and got a tour of the law school. Loved it! Attending W&M admitted students program on Friday....and after that I guess I have to decide where I am gonna go next year.

3/31/07 -- WUSTL waitlist via e-mail (I was traveling so I didn't check my e-mail til today, but it arrived about 5 pm on Friday). E-mail made it sound a lot like a deferral, and was encouraging, but it looks like a ton of peeps have been waitlisted. I guess I'll stay on and see what happens....

4/3/07 -- Forgot to mention that I was amazed with W&M. Before I was set on Illinois, but it looks like I will probably be in Williamsburg next year (unless Vanderbilt wants me....don't forget about me Vandy!)

4/9/07 -- Got my last decision, from GW, via post in thin envelope. Sent in my W&M statement of intent today! Looks my cycle is more or less over.

5/10/07 -- PHONE CALL ACCEPTANCE FROM VANDERBILT. My life is complete! (For now.)

BC
Sunday, September 17 2006 at 08:00 PM

They sent me an email. Is there any reason you might not be complete or something? Also, why not apply to BU? Too many schools already?

Hey twin!

top choice
Monday, July 17 2006 at 08:00 PM

eh I don't really have a top choice ... I used to have a "top 5" (one of which I already got into) but since I started LSDing I feel more pressure to put stock in rankings etc... I don't really know where I want to practice so we shall see ...

Congrats!

Congratulations on Loyola! Just out of curiosity, did you apply for the merit scholarships or did they just offer you the money based on your app? Congrats again, I bet that was a great start to your day!

so true...
Friday, October 20 2006 at 08:00 PM

haha I'm really anxious about my cycle too! But it's probably a bit easier for you, with four acceptances in the beg and all... In any case, best of luck with the rest of the cycle. You've got enough targets to end up in a great school...

thanks

what's weird about bc is i got into bu, which is ranked higher...fine by me. i like to think there aren't too many jou majors out there, so maybe we're kind of original? good luck on all your apps!

dc...
Sunday, September 10 2006 at 08:00 PM

have you thought about applying to american? youd def get in. gwu is a little riskier, even for stellar white female jou majors with 163s and 3.8s such as ourselves...

DePaul

Thanks, you too! Are you currently living in Chicago?

UIUC
Monday, October 23 2006 at 08:00 PM

I just did at interview at UIUC because I got deferred. I don't think they usually interview. Maybe you could call and ask if they would take the time to see you?

Thanks

for the congrats on WashU. I'm from St. Louis, so it's nice to have an option if I don't want to move away from my family.

nothing that really stood out other than the location...i applied mostly to big cities, and american was my safest bet in dc

back atcha!
Friday, December 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

Hi, new friend, right back atcha! You seem like a really nice person, so I'm glad we "met". I would kill for your Loyola LA acceptance right about now (I applied part-time, so I assume I'm going to be in for a long wait). As much as I'd love to be classmates, I'm certain you're going to get into some amazing schools (I'm seeing Emory, for one!) where I don't have much of a shot at. But who knows? I applied because I saw a glimmer of hope. Maybe they'll come through for me. Good luck with Michigan! I live in MN so depending on when they sent out the decision, I should get it soon (if it's a huge acceptance packet, it might take longer, of course ;) See you around the boards!

!

Congrats on U of I!!! I'm dying to get in...

high five
Sunday, October 15 2006 at 08:00 PM

Depending on how the rest of the cycle plays out, maybe I'll be seeing you at UIUC next fall...

thanks!

I did write them i believe at least two letters - one was an email. I have done this for all of my waitlist schools. All you can do is send them a letter maybe every 3-4 weeks reiterating your desire to attend and why you're a good fit. If Vandy is your number one definitely say something like "I would absolutely attend if given the chance, Vanderbilt is my first choice for law school." Good luck!! I hope you get it.

YAY

YAY VANDY!!! I'm excited, I'm sure you are too! CONGRATS!

I envy you :)

hey that's awsome! See you didn't even need my advice anyway, you were going to get it on your own. Have you visited? I'm going to put down a deposit, I want to visit, like first week in June....I've barely ever been to the south. I just need someone to go check it out with.

They sent it i think the next afternoon, it definitely wasn't immediate. haha yeah you kind of wonder if it's for real right? My friend is from Nashville and she says the city has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years and is a real "metropolis" now, so that sounds good

Congrats on Vandy!!
Tuesday, July 18 2006 at 08:00 PM

That is wonderful! Vandy is my dream school.

congrats on vandy!
Thursday, December 21 2006 at 07:00 PM

thats great news! vandy is high in my heart and i'm really hoping to be as fortunate as you to snag a spot off the waitlist. got any suggestions you could pass my way?

How'd You Do It?
Wednesday, June 20 2007 at 08:00 PM

My numbers are pretty similar to mine, and it looks as if Vanderbilt will be my top choice for where I am applying this year. LSN shows that people with these stats generally don't get in, so I was wondering if you did anything specific to help yourself out? Thanks a lot for the help!
