Extra Curricular Information

Interned for Federal and County politicians
TA (grade papers, run once-a-week discussion section): US Politics, Media and Politics

EC:
ULTIMATE; tour guide; career services student advisor; model United Nations
Phi Kappa Phi honor society, junior year

Academic Interests:
Middle Eastern politics and law (with significant focus on Iran)
Human Rights and Development policy
Critical Race Theory and Latin American affairs
and, most of all, Environmental Law and Policy

My Rec's are both Profs who know me well and who have supervised some significant research I have undertaken. One teaches politics and did some work with my MUN team; the other is a non-practicing attorney who teaches business and legal studies. I think they should both be pretty good.

Addenda:
-Disciplinary: incident 1st semester of college, drinking related, put on probation, left the school at the end of the semester. Needless to say it was not the place for me.
-Speeding tickets ... I have kind of a lead foot.

---

My second LOR arrived at LSAC on Nov 14th. This was not in time for several schools that have their settings so that they recieve new items on the 1st and 15th of every month. So for USC, GWU and BU my second LOR was not sent until December 4th, which will probably mean I will not recieve decisions at the same time as people who submitted their apps around the same time as I did.

---
I was recently alerted to the fact that my disciplinary problem requires a letter from a Dean to USC. I never did anything about this. I am not chasing down a dean of a school I attended for a single semester so that I can get into a school that I don't really care to attend anymore. I may withdraw, but I think it will be more fun to see what happens.
April Edit: rejection ... couldn't care less

Additional info & updates

You know, I really don't think there is any harm to putting up all this info. To any admissions official who may see this: The twelve schools to which I have applied were selected from an original list of 30, maybe more. These schools are the ones with the selection of courses and opportunities most in line with my academic and professional interests. I would be so honored to attend any one of these institutions.

For anyone else that looks at this, whether you have already applied, are in the process of applying, or are thinking about applying, I hope this info is of some use to you. I don't see why anyone would be afraid of sharing their experiences and accomplishments with others going through the difficult law school application process. If nothing else, LSN has done two things for me:
1) it has provided me with some basic info on which to base my application strategy
2) it has gotten me even more excited about studying law with all of these really talented people.

Good luck everyone.
Deep breath...

INFO:
2006
December 2nd: William and Mary
Acceptance came on Dec 2, dated Nov 30. Offered graduate fellowship (in state tuition plus $4000/ year to work in library and then do paid research). On my app I wrote the additional essay Q34 on one of my research projects. Also, I visited there and met a dean over the summer.
Holy F I am going to law school!

December 18th: Boston College
Acceptance at my home in Rochester ... not going to see the packet for a few days but I guess it is fairly large. I spent my first semester of college at Northeastern University, and though I hated the school, I love Boston, and over the last few days I have been thinking about just how happy I would be to move back there ... snow and all.

December 24th: I had been wishing I had applied to Vandy for a few weeks now so I just decided to do it. I know it is kind of late for my middle of the road numbers but we shall see...

December 27th: Indiana University
Went back to school for a day to grade papers and found Indiana University-Bloomington acceptance package on my doorstep. $25,500 merit scholarship (over three years, have to stay in top half of class). Nice handwritten note from one of the deans. Actual package was not so good though ... there was a magazine about living in Bloomington but no prospectus or anything about the school. A bunch of open house stuff too.

2007
Pushing on into the new year.

January 3rd: Along with the rest of LSD, got an invitation to apply from Harvard. HA

January 21st: George Washington University
I notice that I have moved into 47th place for most viewed profile. This good news boosts my spirits and gives me high hopes for a good week to come.
EDIT: Literally 20 minutes after writing this I got a call from Dean Richard from GWU letting me know I was IN! On a Sunday! How random!! Anyways she said there would be stuff sent out by Wednesday. Also, she is a Patriots fan.
So not that this matters but I had visited GW over the summer and met Dean Richard early in her tenure at GW. She gave me a personal tour even though I just showed up in the admissions office without calling or anything. Also one of my Rec'ers is friends with a well known prof. at GDub and said he would put in a good word for me. Still waitin' on that scholarship letter, though. No way I'm going to GW without some money.
Week Later Edit: Got acceptance package (no fin aid letter yet) a week after phone call. Had course catalog, fliers on Fin Aid, law building tech, ASWs, and a letter from the dean with a short handwritten note. PS estimated total cost for 1L: 59k. Ouch.

January 24th: Washington University
Got an email from Washington University telling me I was in, and that I would hear from the scholarship committee in early Feb, so I am hoping this means good things. I would really like to visit WUSL and want more info on their placement in Chicago and NY, as their website is not very revealing.
Also, tonight I withdrew from IU-B.

January 25th: University of Washington
Got acceptance letter, regular sized envelope (with "priority mail" handwritten on the outside) ... just letter, deposit/ withdrawl form and scholarship application. Fitting that is was on a Greys Thursday though!

January 29th: Boston University
Large white folder with acceptance letter ... had handwritten note that referenced my PS in a kind of funny way. Also fin aid forms, deposit slip, letter from SGA reps, viewbook and campus map. I am going to try and visit in Feb. I still think I like BC more but I have some desire to maybe someday find my way into academia (obviously not right away as I am not going to HYS) and feel that BU might be a better option in that respect ... but I could just be misinformed. Anyways, again I love Boston ad the fact that BU is closer to downtown is a plus.

And so ends my targets/ safeties for this cycle. I guess I have a top three acceptances: BC, BU and GW. All pending some money, of course. In the end I think the only schools that could overtake one of these three are going to be Vandy, UCLA or Duke. As it stands now I will go to Duke if I get in, no matter what. I will, however, only wait until the end of June on any waitlist. I am not that impulsive of a person and I do really like the schools I have been admitted to right now.

Feb 12 ... quiet past week. Don't expect a whole lot this week either. Keeping an eye on that Vandy status checker but other than that I don't expect any more decision letters until March.
Computer blew up last week so I was forced to buy a new one before I had made my school decision. Despite the high probability that I am going to BC I went with a Mac for the first time. I'm hoping that they will upgrade their exam software so that I can use the mac.
Speaking of BC I am headed to Boston for a Model UN trip (well, model European Court of Justice, really) and am going to sit in on CrimLaw on Thursday. Pretty psyched.
Yeah thats all I've got. Really hoping some scholarships start to roll in soon...

February 19th: $10,000/year scholarship from BU. Pretty happy about this. Just got back from a conference in Boston. I had time to visit BC but I didn't visit BU. I'm hoping this will be mirrored by BC but if not I may have to take another trip to check out BU. In my mind they are tied with GW for second place of my current acceptances so this is a really great thing.

February 26th: Rejected from Duke last friday (just got it today because I was away for the weekend. Small white envelope. Bummed but not surprised. "Provisional List" at Notre Dame today, small white envelope. Only applied because I got a FW, won't stay on.

March 18th: Nothing new to report. Got fin. aid package from GW: all loans. There is no chance I will go there without any money. It is just plain not worth it. I got a complete notice from USC at some point. I still have not gone to decision at Vandy.

March 26th: Finally got the BC aid pckage. $10,000/ year. Pretty psyched. Frankly I love BC and ths just makes it more of a lock. Call it 95% right now. I'll withdraw UW, BU, and W&M tomorrow.

April 1st: OK new rankings threw me for a loop ... BU's big jump erased my plans to withdraw ... going to run the question by some other people. Also sent a request to GW to reevaluate my aid ... if they can dig up some money for me I might consider going there. But after a weekend of ultimate allowed me to forget about law school for a few days I think I am back on the BC train.

Apr 4th: Vanderbilt status checker finally changed on the second ... no word yet but expecting a WL. I don't know if I would stay on or not ... probably not. Withdrew from W&M tonight ... would have been the cheepest school by far, but I like the career options from my main three choices right now far better. I'll probably send my BC deposit in this weekend. I might consider a second deposit going to GW because the Dean sent a general email saying merit money was on hold until late April.

April 8th: My mind wasn't entirely made up, but then Boss made her chart of where all te LSDers are going, and put me under BC, so in a way she made it for me. Vandy is gonna be a waitlist, which I will stay on just for fun. I'm not moving to LA for USC, and I have little hope for UCLA, so hey ... there you have it! Go Eagles!!!

Mid-April update: WL at Vandy and UCLA. I'm going to stay on until the end of june. Never really withdrew from WUSL, GW or BU, which kind of makes me an asshole but I really was considering them to the end. But BC is where I want to be.

LSAT

Hey saw a fellow Phish fan, and thought I would ask if you had any tips on taking the LSAT. I just took it cold and got a 155, I have just begun to study and have not taken it since. Ideally I would like between a 162-165.

Thanks for LSAT tips
Sunday, July 30 2006 at 08:00 PM

Hey thanks for the LSAT tip, in regards to the 'ROO, I did not make it this year. My friend owns a farm that borders the 'ROO property and have been before. I really have been out of the whole scene since Phish broke up. Work and School kinda took over. Where all are you applying? Just interested.

The Guy Above Me
Monday, July 17 2006 at 08:00 PM

Seriously I have seen this guy post onthe walls of everyone who is applying to IU-B. Look at his wall, he really offended one person. Stop that! Maybe you don't like it, but get over yourself... For us environmental lawyers the SPEA is a great resource

Acception already?
Saturday, June 24 2006 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on your first acceptance. I'm already tired of the waiting game! Did you already fill out your financial aid request? I have no idea how a school determines reward levels. Any hints?

Congrats!
Friday, December 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

This is Matokah from the LSD board. I just wanted to say congratulations on your first acceptance! Looks like you'll have many more to come. I'm also interested in Middle Eastern politics (although my interests tend to focus on minority groups within the State of Israel and human rights in Gaza and the West Bank. . .whew!). Did you write about your interest in UCLA's critical race studies program? I considered it, but it seemed as if their program was more about U.S. race studies. Either way, it sounds like a really interest program. Anyway, done babbling. Congrats again on your acceptance and fellowship! :)

Frozen tundra
Friday, December 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

Heh. You guessed correctly. It's about this time of the year where I get incredibly grouchy (good thing the applications have already been sent). I love the Midwest in the summer and fall but not so much in the winter. Good luck with UCLA. I'm hoping that writing the optional essays will help me a little. I actually wrote about my interest in Arab-Israeli rights and talked about how I could contribute to the Journal of Islamic and Near Eastern Law. We'll see! It'd be really hard for me to turn UCLA down. I hope everything works out well for you this cycle. Good luck again and thanks for the congrats. So far so good, right? :)

UW @ seattle
Tuesday, August 29 2006 at 08:00 PM

To your question, YES... that's where I am attending. It is a great campus and I would highly recommend it for anyone who's interested in environment, intellectual prop, etc. The ONLY reason that I'm not applying is because I really don't want to stay in Seattle for the rest of my life. (with few CA options) It's definitely something you should consider if your goal is to live somewhere in the east coast in the future. While opportunity here will be great (w/high pay), the opportunity for a future outside Pacific Northwest is limited at best. Best of Luck!

congrats
Wednesday, November 15 2006 at 07:00 PM

hey man, congrats on your acceptance! You answered a post I had up last week. Curious - do you think the only way I could get into fall 07 is with an outstanding lsat grade for the feb. 07 coming up?

congrats

On W&M, hope it is the first of many.

Can be friendly too, or at least that's what I learned today. Congratulations on your acceptances and serious money from W&M. They're making it sweet on you, and I think you're going to have a lot of financial leverage this spring. Is your name an acronym for a personal descriptor, an homage to Nightcrawler, or is it something else entirely?

Friday, September 01 2006 at 08:00 PM

I'm not really an LSAT snob. Anything in the 90th %ile is an awesome score you should be proud of - and I think with your great GPA you would have had a shot at the T14 (assuming you would be interested). But that's neither here nor there - congrats on all your acceptances so far! W&M is an awesome, awesome school, not at all a bad place to spend three years. PS. snow rules!!! I love it so very, very much. New England winters here I come :D

Good Luck
Wednesday, July 12 2006 at 08:00 PM

On the rest of your cycle. I'm data from LSD. I see you around a lot. Boston College is a hard one to predict. They reject people across the board and accept people with much less than stellar numbers. Here's to hoping I get in! How did the BC acceptance look?

Dane Cook rocks
Thursday, March 09 2006 at 07:00 PM

Congrats so far and congrats on all future acceptances!!! Have fun trying to decide where to go.

haha
Monday, September 18 2006 at 08:00 PM

i got that invite to apply to harvard also. i loved the part at the end where they said something along the lines of, "every year, we accept students who never thought they could get into harvard!!" it really hurt my feelings that they would tease me like that! i mean, how gullible do they think i am?

bam
THANKS!
Wednesday, August 30 2006 at 08:00 PM

That WAS a great prediction. Did you see my LSD post declaring you my favorite poster? Add "ability to see future" to my list of reasons. Congrats on your acceptances & $$$ so far!

Thanks, and congrats on BC as well - it seems like you'll have a lot of great options before the end of the cycle. Good luck!

Thanks for the response!! Your advice and those links are very helpful. I do go to ND. I'm pretty good friends with a 2L and a 3L at the law school so let me know if you have any specific questions (town- poor, school- awesome). Thanks again.

GOOD JOB...
Wednesday, August 30 2006 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on the UW acceptance! It's a beautiful school & a wonderful area. Visit when it gets warmer out so you can see how pretty the campus gets... Congratulations again!

need that money
Monday, December 18 2006 at 07:00 PM

Yeah I'm praying for some of that money from GW too. Unfortunately, I think I'm probably gonna fall right below the scholarship cutoff. I'm jealous of your BC acceptance. I went up there and fell in love with the campus only to be waitlisted 4 days later

Thanks!

Vandy is my forbidden love, and if the deal is sweet enough, I might have to head south. A lot will depend on overcoming my horror of packing my stuff, scholarship $ and my SO. Good luck on the rest of your applications, and congratulations on all your acceptances!

Thanks so much! I am still pretty much on cloud 9. I don't know what to do with myself now that the cycle's over but it definitely began with a glass of champagne!

Wednesday, July 12 2006 at 08:00 PM

Hey man look at you-Things are definitely goin' your way this cycle. Sure don't know what UDub was looking for but you had the secret ingredient so congrats! You have lots to choose from but didn't see a clear #1. Where do you want to end up?

Wow
Wednesday, July 12 2006 at 08:00 PM

Think that's easily the longest comment I've had to date. When you want to make a dude feel special you really make a dude feel special. Man, feel like I should bake you some cookies or somethin' maybe a nice upside down cake? Heh, nah but as for Cornell- It's an Ivy man. It's not an honorary mention Ivy, or the Ivy of the South, or even a Public Ivy. It's an Ivy Ivy! So yeah, call me a prestige-whore cause I guess it's warranted :) So you're thinkin' BC eh? Even if you've got Duke and UCLA acceptances in hand?

BC vs BU

Hey. Congratulations on your decision. I'm deciding between BC and BU. How did you decide on BC?

BC
Saturday, February 17 2007 at 07:00 PM

I agree with everything you said. I visited both BU and BC 2 weeks ago, and fell in love with BC. I just want to make the right decision. Thank you for your help!

I just wanted to say good luck. Your profile and all the info is incredibly helpful as you have almost my exact numbers for this upcoming cycle.
