Extra Curricular Information

Lots of EC's, executive chair of major campus org.

I'm a classic splitter, high LSAT, low GPA. I think this is why I have been wait listed at so many schools. Also, I have a technical major and plan to go into IP.

I'll add more details later in the cycle.

Additional info & updates

Numbers next to schools are chiashu percentages.
All scholarships are total over 3 years.
acelsat.com was to thank for my lsat jump (my first practice test was 147, then I took September and scored 155, then December and scored 166). Their course is AMAZING!

1/10 - UAkron, accepted via email, scholarship info to come after Feb. 1.

1/22 - Michigan State, accepted, small white #10 envelope snail mail to mailing address.

1/24 - Dayton - accepted via email.

1/29 - Packet from Dayton, awarded $18,000/yr Presidential Scholarship renewable w/ being in the top 40% of class each year. Note from Dean.

2/5 - Waitlisted at UCincinnati, letter dated 2/1 in small white envelope to mailing address.

2/12 - Ding! Rejection letter for Boston College, small white envelope to mailing address. Eh, didn't want to go there anyways.

2/17 - 100% scholarship to Mich. State! That's always nice. Came in a small white envelope, same as the acceptance.

2/19 - Received an email from WUStL to set up a time to call to speak about my application.

2/27 - Withdrew from Dayton. With Mich. State's offer, I figured I'd free up this spot/scholarship to somebody else.

2/28 - Ohio State status checker went to "decision". I haven't received a call yet. Does that mean rejection?

2/28 - Akron sent an email awarding a full tuition scholarship plus a one-time $10,000 stipend. Scholarship is renewable based on maintaining a 3.3 GPA. (actual scholarship total depends on if you count in or out of state tuition). Now I have to choose between Mich St and Akron.

2/28 - WUSTL phone interview today. Good conversation. She said I should hear a decision in the next 2 weeks.

3/2 - Waitlisted at Michigan! Very pleasant surprise as this is my ultra-reach! That's good news.

3/2 - Good day for rivalry schools - in at OSU! Checker had gone to decision 2/28, called to get verdict as I was possibly going to be in the area, needed to know to plan the trip. Letter in the mail, no word on $$.

Seriously though- I got accepted to OSU, and waitlisted at Cincinnati? OSU is ranked 39 and Cincy is 53 (usnews). I don't get it.

3/5 - Waitlisted at ND, small white envelope. Hmm I'm waitlisted at 2 of my top 3. I'm glad to have a chance, but that makes things stressful.

3/7 - Letter from OSU came, no word on $$.

3/8 - Waitlisted at GWU. small, cream colored envelope. Hmm. I am becoming the king of waitlists of schools I really want to go to.

3/9 Accepted at WUSTL. Email from Mary Ann Clifford. This is HUGE!!!

3/10 Scholarship letter from OSU. $3,000 one time. $4,000 per year with 3.0 GPA. For a total of $15,000 over 3 years.

3/13 - Rejected at USC, small white envelope. Expected, but sad nonetheless.

3/15 - Rejected at Texas, small white envelope. Oh well. My wife hates Texas anyways.

3/23 - Accepted at George Mason. Kathy Zupan called the phone number of my permanent address to let me know. She said they would mail an information packet early next week.

3/23 - Also, I received an email from Texas letting me know that they received my fafsa info, but that they can't process it because I haven't been admitted. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound.

3/26 - Rejected at Florida. Small envelope. The crazy train keeps rolling, there is absolutely no logic behind my results.

3/27 - I received 2 emails from WashU today. The first said I had a scholarship, the second said that the first email was sent to a bunch of people by mistake. My hopes were up for about 30 minutes.

3/28 - Waitlisted at BYU via email. This is actually the best news of the cycle. You see, all of my family lives in Utah, and really wants me to stick around for law school. Don't get me wrong, I really like my family, but I REALLY want to get out of Utah. There is absolutely no way I will be staying on the wait list. That was $60 well spent.

The new US News rankings are out. It seems that karma has a way of evening things out. Florida rejected me, and then dropped 6 spots. BYU wait listed me and then dropped 10 spots. Ohio State accepted me with a modest scholarship and jumped 8 spots. Michigan wait listed me when I didn't deserve it, and now are ranked as an Intellectual Property school. That's something to think about for the 5 school's I still haven't heard from. If I had the chance, the only suggestion I would have made to karma would have been for Cincinnati to get unaccredited after wait listing me, but I guess that's asking too much.

4/3 - WD from Akron. The money would have been great, I am just too nervous about the career prospects. I'll probably WD from Michigan State soon. The big choice right now is between OSU and WashU. Both are good schools, but there is a big difference on price. (WashU is twice as expensive over 3 years).

4/7 - Rejected at Utah, small white envelope. This is all so weird. Rejected at Utah, waitlisted at Cincy, in at WashU, waitlisted at Michigan/ND/GWU? I'm beginning to wonder if being a splitter plus a "different" PS is what's causing all of this. Who knows.

I've said it before, I have NO idea what is going on with my admissions. To illustrate, here are my current results in order of last year's US News ranking:

8 Michigan [Wait list]
16 Texas [Rejected]
17 USC [Rejected]
19 Washington University in St Louis [Accepted]
19 George Washington [Wait list]
22 Notre Dame [Wait list]
27 Boston College [Rejected]
34 BYU [Wait list]
37 George Mason [Accepted]
39 Ohio State [Accepted] ($3,000 one time + $4,000 per year)
41 Florida [Rejected]
53 Cincinnati [Wait list]
54 Utah [Rejected]
Tier 3 Akron [Accepted] ($10,000 one time stipend + full tuition)
Tier 4 Michigan State [Accepted] (full tuition + free laptop)
Tier 4 Dayton [Accepted]

I don't really see a trend. Anyone else?

4/9 - I emailed Santa Clara today to find out when they would let me know a decision. They responded with mid-May. Seeing as how I have to have a deposit in next week, I don't think there is much of a chance that I'll go to Santa Clara. Knowing my trend, I'll probably get rejected anyway.

4/13 - I emailed Temple earlier in the week asking if I would hear a decision before my other seat deposits are due. They emailed me back today with an acceptance. They said they don't normally inform via email, but due to the time contraints they made an exception.

4/14 - I received a small white envelop at my permanent address informing me that I've been wait listed as Wisconsin. Only two more to hear from- UCLA and Santa Clara.

Since seat deposits are due tomorrow, I'm sending mine into George Mason. They aren't as highly ranked as WashU, but they are MUCH cheaper, and I have a pretty sweet housing hookup in DC. Also, GM has one of the best IP programs in the country, and is located in the best IP market in the country. So from here, I'll be waiting to hear from my wait list schools.

4/15 - Withdrew from Temple, MSU, WUSTL, and OSU. OSU was a very close second, but I feel good about GMU.

4/16 - Akron sent me an email letting me know that even though I withdrew, they were interested in offering a full scholarship (no stipend) with a lower GPA requirement of 2.5 to renew (original offer was 3.3 to renew). I'm still not interested. Others that are interested in Akron might be able to use this information to bargain with them.

4/27 - I think I got into Santa Clara. I got an email today that said "Your ecampus ID can be found in your admit letter." Whatever that means. It uses that word "admit", so I'll call that an acceptance. The email didn't have any Santa Clara identifiers except for the @scu.edu address. I'll update if/when I get something in the mail.

4/27 - Threw the "A" up there for GMU. Still waiting on all the waitlists, but I am stoked to go to GMU.

4/28 - Rejected at UCLA. Thin white envelop. If the Santa Clara acceptance is real, then my cycle is complete. Now it's down to the wait lists.

4/30 - I called Santa Clara, and they confirmed that I had been accepted and that the letter was mailed to my permanent address about a week ago. They said that they try to time the letters and emails to arrive at about the same time, but aren't always successful. So, if you get a cryptic email from SCU that has your ecampus password, then you've been accepted.

4/30 - Large packet with acceptance info from Santa Clara received at my permanent address.

5/2 - Email from ND requesting I fill out a survey indicating continued interest. My interest continues.

5/17 - Accepted off the wait list at Cincinnati, letter to my permanent address. Likely not attending, have to let them know by June. FYI, I didn't send any additional information to Cincinnati to help get me off the wait list.

5/18 - Letter to permanent address for GWU, decisions are being held until the end of June with the second deposit deadline. C'mon GWU, I would totally go if you let me in.

5/21 - $5,000/yr from Cincinnati, letter to permanent address. Handwritten note from assistant dean.

5/24 - Email from ND stating that they will likely allow 10-20 people to be included from their Provisional List, and they should make those decisions mid June. Also, fyi, I spoke to the Admissions Director a few weeks ago about the Provisional List, and she mentioned that one of the problems is that ND only has one seat deposit (mid April). She said that this will change next year to the standard 2 deposit system utilized by most Law Schools. Unfortunately, this means that those of us waiting this year are at the mercy of people voluntarily removing themselves from the accepted pool when they decide to attend somewhere else.

5/24 - I finally got around to with drawing from Santa Clara today, sorry to anyone who has been waiting.

6/8 - BYU emailed today saying that they will likely be letting a few people off the wait list, and to respond to let them know if they are still my "first choice". I had written BYU off in March, I'll have to think about this one.

6/14 - I joined the group of WL/Reject at Michigan today. They sent a letter to my permanent address saying that I was very qualified, but not enough to be accepted. They also said that they would be happy if I applied again next year.

6/18 - Email from Akron offering full tuition plus $15K stipend, renewable w/ a 2.6 (top 60%)the first year, 3.3 (top 10%)the second. Still not going, but it was awfully nice of them.

6/21 - ACCEPTED OFF THE PROVISIONAL LIST AT NOTRE DAME!!!!!!!!!!!!! Almost certainly attending!!! I had called them to check on the status of the provisional list, and they informed me of my acceptance. Email came shortly thereafter, letter is in the mail. I had an additional LOR sent in, also 2 additional LOCI's sent in, one early on to state my intentions to go and my reasons for wanting to attend, another later indicating my continued interest and updating my EC info as we had a major activity this last semester that I was very involved in. SO EXCITED. CHEER, CHEER FOR OL' NOTRE DAME!

6/25 - Withdrew from BYU. Likely to withdraw from GWU/Wisc/GMU later today, after I put down my deposit at ND. Also, ND offered $5,000/yr fellowship, renewable with a 2.0.

6/26 - Withdrew from GWU/GMU/Cincy, sent in seat deposit to ND. Go Irish!

6/27 - Received email from Cincy informing me that my scholarship had been upgraded to $10k/yr. The email was in response to my withdrawal. My decision to attend ND is unchanged. So, if you're attending Cincy, I know they have scholarship money available, so call them!

Any idea why they waitlisted you with that lsat? I have the same lsat and a fairly low gpa too... this makes me nervous.

caj36 cannot follow directions.

Dayton emailed and said I should apply... that was before I took the LSAT, not sure why. I did since it was free. Plus scholarships are always nice.

I see... well you still have a chance at getting in there. I'm sure you'll get into some more schools anyway; they can't all deny the 166. Good luck man.

Congrats!
Thursday, January 11 2007 at 07:00 PM

I'm guessing you're the only guy on LSN to be wait-listed at both Cincinnati and Michigan haha... Anyway, congrats on OSU! I suppose I'll be waiting a few days to find out about them for myself.

thanks

appreciate the positive comment. i'm keeping my fingers crossed, but i don't want to be too disappointed. good luck with wustl and MI!

Yeah I'd need to get some $$$ to seriously consider OSU over W&L, but hey, it's a very good school. I have family in Columbus too, so if the price is right...

WashU

Congrats on Washu!! I saw you had a phone interview.. Did they request that or did you? I didn't know they did interviews... Where are you leaning toward?

Good job with WUSTL and the OSU $$$... do you have any idea what you're going to do with that?

Yeah, I was fairly torqued, as you could imagine. What a slap in the face. Oh well. I've "served" some time at a UC school and wasn't planning on doing it again anyway. As it stands, I'm holding out for the Columbia or Chicago hold lists. I'm also still waiting to hear from Penn. If I get into either Chicago or CLS, I'll go there. If not, it'll be a tossup between Penn and UMich, leaning towards UMich for comparable school with far cheaper cost of living. I guess time will only tell. Good luck with the rest of your magic 8 ball process! Hold out for Mich. We may just end up there together. Our wives can commiserate together while we're in the library till 3am...

Hey

caj, I just wanted to tell you that you're my favorite LSN profile. LOL @ Florida and your other interesting results. Any idea where you're going yet?

hmm
Thursday, January 11 2007 at 07:00 PM

I really don't know where I'll be next year yet. I'm leaning toward W&L now, but I haven't ruled out OSU and I'd consider any of the schools that I'm still waiting on. Hopefully I hear back from everywhere in the next week so I can make some last minute visits and decide.

GM
Thursday, January 11 2007 at 07:00 PM

Cool. Let me know what you think of it... I might attend their admitted student program on the 15th but also might not since I'll be at OSU on the 13th and the driving would be a bit excessive.

GM Visit
Thursday, January 11 2007 at 07:00 PM

You really like DC then, huh? GM interests me, but I think I'd still prefer W&L for my Virginia option... it's hard to know since I can't really visit. Any reason why OSU isn't so high on your list anymore?

The letter said they have more seat deposits than seats avilable so they were taking me off the wait list. So I could move on with other plans.

They gave me the same date, but I haven't heard anything else yet. I was thinking the same thing, though, that they would start making decisions this week.

Thanks/Congrats!
