Extra Curricular Information

============EXTRAS============
-3 years of marching band
-Worked ~20 hrs/wk throughout school
-Internship at courts (only recently though)
-Volunteered w/ a law counseling center (only recently though)
- Kappa Kappa Psi member (band frat, not a FRAT frat)
-Some self-employed stuff

======PERSONAL STATEMENT======
About my marching band experiences...which sounds REALLY lame by itself, but I think it turned out really good. Not so much about being in marching band, but more stories that portray my sense of humor, strong dedication, etc.

===========LETTERS===========
One letter from a poli sci professor, one from a computer science professor, and one from a judge I interned with. All great letters (I hope!) but they wouldn't let me see 'em so I can't say for sure.

=========GPA ADDENDUM========
1) My major is ridiculously hard w/ a ridiculous curve (w/ numbers to back it up),
2) I got married, had a kid, underwent a religious conversion, and dealt w/ family illnesses during my undergrad years.
3) My school wouldn't let me drop two courses the quarter before I got married cause I was a couple days late in my request, so now I have two F's even though I didn't really even do the courses (Takings these off, I have a 3.02).

========OTHER ADDENDA========
I also wrote an additional addendum to BYU explaining why I REALLY wanted to go there.

Additional info & updates

***Scholarship values are total for all three years***

02/06/06 - Gonzaga acceptance in medium-sized white envelope dated 02/02...two letters, one for acceptance, one for $7500/yr merit scholarship....hrrm...I'm really grateful for the money, but people w/ significantly lower numbers got considerably more $$$...hopefully this isn't a sign that a) all the schools hate me because I'm late in the cycle, b) all the schools hate my soft factors, or c) both.

02/08/06 - Southwestern acceptance in big white envelope. Got a magnet out of it :)

02/09/06 - San Diego acceptance in medium-large manila envelope...woo hoo my highest ranked school yet! I'm 3 for 3! At $35k+ a year plus the extra cost of living in San Diego though, I'd definitely consider Gonzaga a contender w/ SD, even though it's not nearly as good academically. Southwestern's hopes aren't looking good, unless some big money comes my way.

02/13/06 - E-mail from Washington University in Saint Louis - I'm 4 for 4 and in at a top 25 law school :D Needless to say they are a big contender. There is a very good chance that they will end up being the highest ranked school I get into. Now if I only had the money to go visit them...

02/13/06 - Missed a call from Cardozo

02/14/06 - Talked to Rob Schwartz from Cardozo...I'm in :) That's 5 for 5 :D He said I might be able to get reimbursed $350 to come visit, which would be very nice. They're sending out my packet tomorrow.

02/14/06 - Houston's status check changed to "Decision Mailed."

02/15/06 - Got an e-mail from Houston...6 for 6! :D

02/18/06 - Got the packet from Cardozo...nice viewbooks and stuff...looks like a great place to spend three years.

02/21/06 - Got an e-mail from Washington & Lee! mmm....BOOYA!!! 7 for 7 :D I really wasn't a shoo-win there at all...according to last year's LSN graph, I was probably at best a waitlist (especially considering how late in the cycle I am). Hopefully this means a) all the schools love my soft factors, b) applications are down and schools are more likely to accept me, or c) both.

02/21/06 - Small envelope from W&L

02/21/06 - Small envelope from Houston

02/21/06 - Small envelope from WUSTL w/ hand-written note mentioning specifics from my personal statement...they prolly do it for everybody, but that sure was nice :)

02/27/06 - Small envelope from Willamette. That was fast! $18k/yr...and all I have to do to keep it is get a 2.90 :D

02/27/06 - Small envelope from ASU, with nice hand-written note from dean talking about personal statement specifics. 9 for 9!!!

02/27/06 - Small envelope from W&L offering $6k a year...nice icing considering I wasn't sure I'd get in. It'd be nice if I could get out to visit.

03/01/06 - Phone call from Utah. They are probably my most likely school thus far, followed not too distantly by San Diego. I would love to spend the next three years and perhaps longer in Salt Lake City. Even if I got in everywhere (which won't even come close to happening), Utah would still be somewhat of a contender. Of the schools I've been admitted to thus far, this was the least likely according to Chiashu odds. 10 for 10!!! I went 8 for 8 in undergrad, so I'm really 18 for 18 at school's I've applied to :D However, this will surely all come crashing down soon as I applied to lots of reach schools, and I'm likely to get into approx. 1/3 of the schools left.

03/02/06 - Received small white envelope from Santa Clara. Great school for IP :) 11 for 11...the last part of the process is pretty much gonna suck, as my list of likely admit schools dwindles.

03/02/06 - My top choice school requested my fall grades...really curious as to whether that's good or bad. They're a school that uses waitlists, and I'm guessing that if I was borderline reject/waitlist that they'd just waitlist me....so hopefully it means I'm borderline admit/waitlist. Unfortunately my grades weren't very good for the fall...in fact they were even slightly below my already low GPA =(

03/06/06 - Got the envelope from Notre Dame. I feel somewhat indifferent...wasn't planning on going there, but of course it would have been nice to get an acceptance.....11 for 12.

03/12/06 - E-mail from Chicago-Kent.....odd to get it on Sunday? Oh well...12-0-1 is my record, but the good fights remain. All the schools left are top fifty (except for a T4 I applied to late in hopes of $$$). Not counting that T4 one, Chiashu (www.chiashu.com/lsat.html) says my odds of getting in are greater than 50% at four of my remaining schools......however, only two of them are likely admits I'd say....one (my top choice) I'm very borderline at....and one, even though it says I have a 61% chance I'd be VERY surprised if I got in. Then there's a whole bunch of schools where I have no chance at. If Chiashu was 100% accurate in my odds, then I'd have a 66% chance of getting into at least one top 14 school....however, since Chiashu said that I had a better shot at WUSTL than Gonzaga, I'm thinking it might not be 100% accurate :|

03/13/06 - Letter from WUSTL - $5000/yr :)

03/14/06 - Small envelope from Chicago-Kent....acceptance notification w/ $10,000/yr :)

03/16/06 - IN AT BYU!!! WOO HOOO!!!! My TOP choice :D :D :D Came in an e-mail this afternoon. Law school here I come. I'm really sorry to all those people I asked to withdraw...I was just freakin out a bit about not getting in...congrats and I'll see ya next year!

03/16/06 - In other news...rejected at UCLA (small envelope)...was expected and I'm really not disappointed, especially w/ the Y acceptance.

03/17/06 - No go at Michigan (small envelope)....honestly if I don't get into the rest of my schools, I would be more than happy w/ this cycle....it would of course be nice to have a T14 to at least think about :) But I'm very much not expecting that at all. I'm gonna send out withdraws once I get some time soon. 13-2-1

03/20/06 - $17.5k/yr from Cardozo...whew that's a lot of money! It's just over half tuition. Very generous and much appreciated...I'll be sending my withdraw soon so they can give it to someone else.

03/20/06 - Small envelope from UIUC - "priority" waitlist...honestly I'm really surprised by this one...I should have been an auto-admit there. If you look at the graph I'm surrounded by green dots! Either I was just too late or they really didn't like something about me.

03/20/06 - Got the small envelope from BYU. Hooray! Now I know the e-mail wasn't a mistake :)

03/20/06 - Withdrew via e-mail from W&L, WUSTL, Wilamette, Houston, Cardozo, Chicago-Kent, Gonzaga (go bruins this weekend!), Santa Clara, and Southwestern.

03/22/06 - No go for GULC. 13-3-2

03/31/06 - Recent news includes rejections at UVA and GW (the usual one-page small envelopes), as well as an unexpected WL from Davis via on-line status checker.

04/18/06 - WL at NW via e-mail.

04/24/06 - WL at PENN via e-mail.

Heh...I wish :)....I got that e-mail. I would love to go visit the school...we\\\'ll see if it works out. Congrats on your acceptance...I\\\'m stoked - W&L is a great school. I\\\'ve never been to virginia, but from what I know it seems like a really nice place.

Congrats on the admits. How did you prepare for the lsat?

LSAT
Thursday, December 01 2005 at 07:00 PM

Thx...I did self prep...took lots of practice tests...didn't score as high as I did in practice tests....I improved 7 points over my blind diagnostic. If you have the money I'd recommend taking a prep course (I actually teach for Kaplan now)...if not, then I'd suggest taking lots of full length practice tests, and REALLY focus on why you missed the questions you missed and how to fix it so that you don't miss those types of questions in the future....don't worry about your scores along the way...the only score that matters is on the actual test day....use your mistakes as opportunities to figure out what you're doing wrong and how to fix it.

BTW
Thursday, December 01 2005 at 07:00 PM

BTW...I did use "Nova's Master the LSAT"...costs 50 bucks and has three (maybe four?) full length real tests....useful for tips on diagramming and stuff like that, but definitely not a substitute for a prep course.

ASU Envelope
Thursday, December 01 2005 at 07:00 PM

Well if I tell ya that it'll ruin the surprise for you :) It was fairly thick....four pages plus a return envelope. The postage was 56 cents.

why Utah?
Sunday, January 08 2006 at 07:00 PM

W&L, Cardozo, and Washington U are all better schools -- why choose Utah over those? Don't get me wrong, Utah's a good school -- I'm just curious why it's so high on your list.

Congrats!

I just wanted to say congrats to a fellow Coug. Nice job on the LSAT - where were you when I was studying, huh? :P

Re:
Thursday, December 01 2005 at 07:00 PM

Thx for the congrats marnster - and nice job w/ the Willamette scholarship!! LitDoc - My spouse refuses to move to Manhattan, and even though W&L and WUSTL are both awesome schools, I'm sort of a west coast kinda person and can't see myself moving way out there unless it were for like a T15 school. I love Salt Lake City, and there's a very good chance we'll end up settling somewhere in that area. If I had the money I'd love to go out to WUSTL and/or W&L to visit. As decision time gets closer I may just go to one or the other....W&L is my third contender right now I'd say....but a good visit could totally sway me. Everything I've heard about them says they're an awesome school w/ a very personal experience. Anyways...congrats on your acceptances LitDoc and you're great scholarships...I guess some schools really do look at stuff besides your Index.

Congrads!

congradulations on all your acceptances! i didn't write the "why michigan" essay intially, but sent it in around late february. i guess they just didn't want me. congradulations again: those are some awesome choices.

Wednesday, February 22 2006 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on all your acceptances and thanks for your suggestions. It's a little late in the game to apply to more schools and my bank account is empty from applying to so many schools. I'm going to wait it out and see what happens. Best of luck to you. Cheers!

BYU withdraw?
Wednesday, November 09 2005 at 07:00 PM

Just because I've been accepted to other great schools doesn't mean I'm not going to BYU Law. I actually just visited this weekend and came away impressed. Rankings are important but not the deciding factor. Plus you can't beat the price!

BYU
Wednesday, January 04 2006 at 07:00 PM

There are still many reasons for me to consider BYU. Great school, price, location. I am still deciding on what will be best for me. Being accepted to higher ranked schools does not mean that I will not be attending BYU.

Calm down...
Thursday, December 01 2005 at 07:00 PM

I wasn't actually telling ya'll to withdraw...I was just bringing the idea up so that if anybody was considering it, they might remember that it would help other people. Obviously I understand that rankings aren't everything...I've been accepted at higher ranked schools.

yeah,
Wednesday, October 19 2005 at 08:00 PM

I'd withdraw, but I haven't made any decisions yet... I have a feeling that I may have gotten in at byu based on an inside connection rather than anything else.

Another yeah
Saturday, October 01 2005 at 08:00 PM

Sorry but no early withdrawl from BYU...I'm waiting to see all my financial options. Even with BYU's rate hike and the lower award amount, it's still my cheapest option and I wouldn't have to setup two seperate households. Three year projected tuition costs: Indiana - Bloomington: $57,000 Washington & Lee: $52,650 William & Mary: $33,900 BYU: $31,200 So right now, W&L isn't close to my best financial option while BYU is. Plus, I still haven't heard back from Utah, GMU, or Alabama about financial aid and Michigan & UIUC are still AWOL. Still too many variable in the air for me to make a decision. I suspect more acceptance will begin to flow after April 1st (when the seat deposit for the first spurt of acceptances is due).

Heh...yeah I can definitely understand not being really big on BYU if you aren't LDS....and I couldn't agree more about the $$$...it worked out very nice that my Church has a great law school that over the course of three years costs much less than one year at just about anywhere else :) I remember when I was in high school saying "boy...if I was Mormon I sure would go to BYU cause it's so stinkin cheap"...well, now I am and....I am! :D

hmm...
Thursday, December 01 2005 at 07:00 PM

I definitely applied to too many auto-admits that I knew I wasn't going to go to....in fact, I just applied to way too many schools in general.

oh wow
Thursday, March 16 2006 at 07:00 PM

how'd you manage to get all of those waivers? any advice to the rest of us?

Re: advice
Thursday, December 01 2005 at 07:00 PM

The waivers are need-based...if you get a fee waiver for the LSAT, you get an automatic fee waiver at most law schools. My recommendation would be get the ball rolling early (eg NOW) on your LSAT studying, LORs, and PS. Your LSAT is by far the most important thing you can work on at this point, but don't underestimate the amount of time your Letters and PS will take.

great acceptances
Thursday, January 04 2007 at 07:00 PM

Hey, how long did you study for the LSAT and how? Do you have any personal advice before I take it in 17 days? Thanks.
