Extra Curricular Information

**Updated for future applicants**

Extracurriculars were probably below average for the typical "T14" applicant. (I applied directly out of ugrad.) I was a tutor and involved in a few unusual things, as well as holding a position on a hiring committee, but nothing extraordinary. I had one very good recommendation that I saw, and two others that probably didn't help or hurt either way. I believe that the success I had this cycle was not purely attributable to numbers, however, and that I was helped by a strong personal statement and a bit of an unusual geographic background. My advice would be to find a niche for yourself and sell it.

Additional info & updates

**Update- T Stock e-mail 5/9, phone call 5/10, admission 5/11**

June 4- It's official, withdrew from Columbia after having sent in HLS deposit. After all of that, I'm Harvard 2010.

_________________________________________

It's official: Columbia 2010

I have been delighted with this cycle, and its ending is very unexpected for me, as I was pretty sure I'd be going to Penn. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions future (or current) applicants might have about my decision.

A word of advice to future applicants: you can haggle for money, especially with other offers, and even without. It also doesn't hurt to ask for more. For instance, although I received 45k from Penn, I called asking for more, and was basically assured of 60k if I committed. But, as you can see, I didn't do that.

-----------
Acceptances:

11/20- Georgetown- Received letter in mail with the requisite (very nice) handwritten note from Dean Cornblatt.

11/29- Michigan- Status changed to "decision" online and I received a package with acceptance overnighted to Canada from Ann Arbor. Classy. For those interested, I did write "Why Michigan.

12/21- Penn- Call from Renee Post at 7pm telling me I was accepted. Phew. Wrote "Why Penn".

1/11/07- UVa- Acceptance by mail, with mention of Dean's scholarship, amount TBD in March.

1/26- Columbia- PDF letter by e-mail. Pleasantly surprised, I really thought I'd be deferred or waitlisted.:)

Deferral:

1/10/07- E-mail from Harvard indicating "hold" status. Very unsurprised. ;)
______________________________________________-

2/7- Sent in a letter of continued interest to HLS along with an updated transcript, not that I think it will make much difference, but you never know.

Also, updated the profile with a bit more specific info.

2/9- Letter from Michigan offering 54k over three years.

3/2- Back from visits to Penn and CLS. Loved both. No idea where do go, and feeling subject to a future of indecisiveness. Oh, also received an e-mail saying I didn't get Gtown's Dean's Scholarship. Not too disappointing considering I spent about 15 minutes on the essays. I think I'll be withdrawing soon.

3/25- Decided its time to give another update. Its probably down to CLS and Penn for me, although I'm waiting for my financial aid from UVa. A lot will probably come down to $$ (hear that, adcomms? ;)) Any suggestions, informed or otherwise, are more than welcome.

3/30- Scholarship offer from UVa of 60k over three years.
Also, 45k Dean's Scholarship over three years from Penn, via e-mail. It's been a productive day!

4/10- Columbia notified me that I received a 35k "Yee Moral Obligation Scholarship " spread out 14-14-7 over 3 years, to be paid back once I'm presumably rich and fabulous. This is very unexpected. I had pretty much decided on Penn, and now, back to the drawing board. Any suggestions?

4/30- Deposit sent to Columbia

You're sitting pretty with an awesome LSAT score. Best of luck this cycle! No West Coast schools for you?

Top Canadian eh?
Thursday, June 29 2006 at 08:00 PM

Love it - like we have top schools as comparable to those down south. Similar apps - best of luck!

No east coast schools for me. I'm pretty much set on Chicago but it will depend on how successful my husband is in finding a job there. Good luck in your application cycle.

Why no Chicago?

...or Yale for that matter?

Yale

well good luck to you too. BTW, not interested in yale? on chiatsu, our numbers are about a 20% chance! (yours probably a little higher) think about it

thank you

I figured if I don't feel that I did much better, I will cancel. Good luck to you with applications!

I guess I should've listened to everyone who said don't retake. You did the right thing by keeping your score. Good luck with all of your applications. I'm sure there will be some great acceptances in the mail for you in just a few short months.

Good luck

Thanks for your note. We do have similar numbers, but if I recall correctly from LSD, you have better soft factors. I will be watching you too. Best of luck!

Thanks for the kind words, I'll be cheering for you too. I haven't really researched any schools yet - I'll wait to see where I get in and then do some research. Your first choice?

Congrats!

Congrats on Georgetown, what a fantastic start to the cycle! (And many more acceptances to come!!)

Choices
Friday, August 18 2006 at 08:00 PM

I did have a first choice (CLS) until Toby Stock called- oh man, now my head's all over the place and I have no idea what my first choice is! How about you?

agree
Saturday, September 30 2006 at 08:00 PM

I feel the sae way as mpark...I thought it would probably be Columbia (were I to get in) until the Harvard interest, which was surprising. It's looking good for people in our numbers range (knocks on wood).

Thanks and congrats
Monday, May 01 2006 at 08:00 PM

on your acceptances! I'm sure you've got a lot more coming to you. So you're not applying to NYU either? ;-)

in response to your post about why i went ED at UVA... i just knew that was where i wanted to go, and wanted to take every precaution to make sure i got in... not the best financial choice, but I think it was the right move

Monday, June 26 2006 at 08:00 PM

Thanks so much : ) Penn absolutely made my holidays. I'm sure you'll get your call soon!

Penn
Friday, January 20 2006 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the encouragement. I sure hope you're right. Congratulations on the acceptance. I can't say I'm terribly surprised with those big numbers you've got there, but it must be exciting nonetheless. Just promise you'll withdraw as soon as Toby Stock gives you the nod. Unless you're really going for Penn, in which case I hope to meet you in the Fall. Good luck!

I appreciate it
Thursday, June 01 2006 at 08:00 PM

Your congratulations that is. Michigan, Penn, and Virginia were my top picks (all equal) at the start of this process and Michigan probably clinched it today. You have outstanding numbers and I wouldn't be surprised if you got an equally lucrative offer from one of your main schools. I have no doubts you'd wear a Hamilton quite well. Thanks again! ~Reach

I don't know yet. I'm very conflicted but I probably won't be able to go to Michigan (although I would love to) since my husband already accepted a job in Chicago. Congrats on Penn. I know you've been waiting for that one

congratulations
Sunday, December 11 2005 at 07:00 PM

on GULC, Michigan, and Penn. Are you leaning towards any schools in particular?

I'm also

leaning toward Penn. Ivy League and an awesome city...what more could a girl want?

Re:
Monday, May 01 2006 at 08:00 PM

Thanks, Saja! Congrats on getting into both Penn and UVa, and good luck on your last two apps! So is it looking like Penn right now for you???

Re: Penn
Monday, May 01 2006 at 08:00 PM

You have outstanding chances of big money at Penn, but good luck anyway! Has Penn sent out scholarship invites yet?

At last!

Surprise! Just informed of Michigan package received at home today...thanks for the karma!

Numbers Twin
Sunday, December 10 2006 at 07:00 PM

Hey there, we are bascially numbers twins. I just received the Harvard phone call e-mail last Friday. I am wondering: did you?

Nice to see you at Columbia ASW!
Monday, May 01 2006 at 08:00 PM

You have a tough decision ahead of you--are you still leaning towards Penn?

Re: stuff
Monday, July 10 2006 at 08:00 PM

In that case, it's 2000 that's the new 1918.

Thanks and Congrats
Wednesday, December 20 2006 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the kind words and congrats on all your phenomenal acceptances. I wish you the best of luck at Harvard...in a completely altruistic sense, one which has no bearing on the possibility of a spot opening up for me at Columbia. I'm really looking forward to Penn's ASW, too, though.

Friday, April 21 2006 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the well wishes. I won't hear about it till next week, so I'm trying not to think about it! How the Penn/CLS decision going? Are Mich/UVA out of the running?

re: Congrats...
Wednesday, August 30 2006 at 08:00 PM

Thanks and it was need-based grants. Received an e-mail yesterday afternoon with a link to Penn's fin aid page. I'm actually quite surprised at the total as I haven't gotten anywhere near this much need-based money at other schools. Pleasantly surprised, of course. Are you going to the ASW?

re: Penn ASW
Wednesday, August 30 2006 at 08:00 PM

Hmm probably Penn at this point. But that could change if Columbia or Harvard come calling, however remote that possibility may be. Congrats on CLS, btw. It was my #1 at the beginning of the cycle. Are you deciding between Penn and CLS?

Penn ASW
Wednesday, August 30 2006 at 08:00 PM

I'm heading to the airport right now to catch a flight to Philly for ASW. I'll be the lost-looking kid from southern California (never been to Philly before). Have a safe trip and maybe I'll see you there.

CLS ASW
Saturday, October 21 2006 at 08:00 PM

I just got a bad vibe from the place. The current students I met only wanted to bash NYU and talk about the big firms they wanted to work for. I'm sure it's not totally representative, but it left a really bad taste in my mouth, especially after visiting Penn (which I thought was great). Also, congrats on your cycle so far! I'm sure Harvard will come through for you.

Thanx :} It really is a dream come true. Hope to see you in August!

CLS
Wednesday, November 29 2006 at 07:00 PM

Hey there, congrats on the Columbia scholarship! I can definitely see this complicating your decision though. I truly cannot tell you what to do. Didn't you say that you enjoyed Columbia slightly more during your visit though? As for me, I think I've eliminated Penn from the running, simply because I would be much happier living in one of the other two places. (You know I wasn't fond of Philly haha). But of course that's just my personal preference...you seemed to like Philly a lot, right?

Decisions, decisions
Wednesday, December 20 2006 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the comments, I'll be following MCB's similar dilemma very closely on LSD. I'm relieved to hear you enjoyed yourself at Columbia's ASW. The only thing that worries me is the COL in Manhattan. Some absolutely incredible apartments are available in Chicago for nearly half the price of what CLS offers.

Thanks. You, too.

Harvard
Wednesday, November 01 2006 at 07:00 PM

The Harvard acceptance was such a surprise! I'm still in shock over it so I'm trying to let it sink in before I make a decision. As much as I loved Chicago though, I feel like going to HLS is too great of an opportunity to pass up! What are you thinking now?

congrats
Saturday, March 03 2007 at 07:00 PM

on hls! welcome!

Harvard vs. Hamilton
Thursday, October 19 2006 at 08:00 PM

I still don't know yet. I have been waiting for my award package from HLS which I just got today. I hope to have a decision made by the end of the week. Congrats on making a choice! I have a feeling you are going to have a great three years in Cambridge. Maybe I will see you there!
