Additional info & updates

Unless something else comes to my attention, I am now DONE applying to law school! Now its time to wait and see what happens.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4-08-08: Decision made. UIUC. Good luck to everyone who's watched this page!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4-07-08: Awarded a $29k grant for USD which is renewable provided that I can prove that I'm still poor enough to need it for 2 and 3L. They wanted my deposit by TOMORROW (how can they give me this information and expect me to make a decision in one day), but I called and was granted an extension.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
3-29-08: FINALLY SAN DIEGO. No scholarship information, though. I won't go without substantial $$.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3-23-08: USD claims they will have a decision to sometime this week. Visited Cal West and REALLY liked the school. A lot. Unfortunately, the ranking is a killer and its unlikely I will go there. However, if you're reading this and are considering the school, I thought it was great!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3-12-08: Withdrew from American. I've read too many negative things about it and its way too expensive. STILL waiting for San Diego. They're handling this cycle very poorly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2-13-08: Withdrew from Pace, Hofstra and Chapman. All would've cost me the same or even more than attending UIUC and are much lower ranked.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
2-11-08: Called San Diego and they said the bulk of their decisions won't be out until March and April. I don't see how that is an effective strategy, since by then most people will have willingly or been forced to make a decision (deposits, etc). They could at least reject some people. :( Not me, of course.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2-09-08: Accepted to Hastings via LEOP program with small personal note on acceptance letter! Excited that I have a decent option in California!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2-08-08: Called to check the status of my application and found out I was accepted to California Western with a full tuition scholarship. With scholarship comes free flight and hotel for a scholarship student's weekend. To keep full ride, I must be in top 25% of class. I can keep 50 or 25% of the money depending on my GPA if I fail to stay in top 25% of class.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2-08-08: Sent out waitlist paper and LOCI to UCLA today.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2-04-08: OMG WAITLISTED at UCLA! I know I'm not getting off that waitlist but at least I wasn't rejected as I expected. Hahaha. Oh well! I will be sending in a LOCI and we'll see what happens.

*waits impatiently for San Diego* Removed UGA because the eternal "Pending" was bothering me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1-28-08: In at Georgia State (small envelope) AND they gave me resident status. The cheap tuition and cost of living are really something I have to consider even though I hate Atlanta.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1-25-08: In at Hofstra, regular size envelope, no mention of $$. *Waits (im)patiently for San Diego.*
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1-24-08: In at American. I'd just like to hear back from San Diego--that's a huge option for me, and everything else is kind of extra at this moment.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1-21-08: Finally got my hands on my mail, expect for 4 large envelopes, which I hope I can get tomorrow!

Pacific: $20,000 a year "International Legal Fellow" scholarship. Must be in top 1/3 of class. Also includes free tuition and lodging for a summer program in Austria.

Pace: Got a small envelope about admitted students days, so I'm assuming that one of the 4 large envelopes I can't get at is the Pace acceptance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
01-03-08: Complete at Hastings. Just got back from break and found out that my school has stopped all the mail from the post office and I will not be able to get it until the end of the month. Ugh. Can't wait to graduate from this place.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-21-07: Received an e-mail from UIUC about my acceptance saying that they wanted to make sure I knew of my acceptance before the new year. Awww. It also said that a DVD and book would be coming in the next month. I'm really loving this school right now.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-18-07: I called UIUC just to ask if they could send the decision letter to my permanent address and was told that I was accepted and had a $20,000 per year scholarship offer!! I can't believe I made it to the top 25. Wow!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-17-07: FIRST ACCEPTANCES!!!!!!!

Chapman: 30% tuition scholarship, renewable based on GPA. (Doesn't say what GPA I have to maintain.) That's roughly $10,000 a year. Not really enough for me, unfortunately.

University of Pacific: No $$$ information will be coming until later, but I did get "honors" meaning free books for the freshman year. The assistant dean wrote a nice personal note on my acceptance letter. Aww!

I also got something about being a "Legal Scholar." Not sure if it is the same thing as "honors," but as a Legal Scholar I get free books, paid transportation to a Legal Scholar's visit day, priority on-campus housing and admission support. Interesting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-17-07: Um, wow. UIUC status checker now says "decision, letter mailed" and it has only been 4 days. I'm thinking this is a bad sign, given that my numbers are low.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-13-07: U of I status checker says "in review" as of today. Still no acceptances though.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-12-07: Still no acceptances or rejections yet. I'm super frustrated, especially since I will be leaving for X-mas break next week, will be gone from my mailbox for 2 weeks, and am concerned that I may not have access to my mail until 1-20-08. I would've liked at least one acceptance before all of that happens.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-10-07: Called Chapman due to a LOR problem and learned that my application is now in review. Called UGA again (I've lost count now) and they assured me that everything will be "taken care of." Not holding my breath!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-07-07: Can I have an acceptance now? Please??

Submitted my Hastings and UCLA applications. Complete @ American via e-mail early in the morning.

Called California Western and they said that they won't give me a complete without first semester senior year grades. This is the only school I have heard this from. They also don't start reviewing apps until early January.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-05-07: I am seriously considering withdrawing my application from UGA. Also decided to apply to UCLA and Hastings after all to make up for the report I already paid for with UGA.

Georgia State status finally changed to "complete, ready for review."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-04-07: Called San Diego to confirm I was complete. Received an e-mail stating I was complete the next day.

Called UGA again and apparently they "forgot" that I had indeed sent in my certification form and fee waiver, and that's why they hadn't requested my report. My report will be requested "today." ADDITION: The end of the day is here and my report still hasn't been requested.

Lastly, I called American and they pretty much said that they haven't even looked at my application yet, so they have no idea if I'm complete or not. However, I see a lot of decisions already on LSN so I'm not sure what is going on.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-27-07: Complete at U of I via e-mail. FINALLY Cal Western has requested my report!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-21-07: Chapman sent me e-mails asking about an LOR from a professor and so I assume that other than the one LOR, which they are now requesting, my file is complete.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-20-07: American FINALLY requested my report today. I don't even care about this school anymore. I REALLY need for Cal Western and UGA to get on the ball and get my report!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-16-07: Complete at Pace via e-mail today.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-14-07: Checked Georgia State's online status checker and my information is there! All documents were listed as received and my application status is "in progress"! U of Georgia FINALLY has me listed as application received on their status checker but still haven't requested my LSAC report. I read on LSD that they only request the reports on the 1st and the 15th of every month so it should be requested by the end of this week. If not, I'll call.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-13-07: Hofstra and Pace requested my report, so all but three schools have what they need to make a decision. I had to call U of Pacific in order to confirm that I was complete--I suspect not all schools notify you if you are complete or not . . .
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-11-07: Being realistic about what I can afford to pay for law school, I decided not to apply to the higher ranked/competitive schools, knowing that I *could* get in but there is no way they would give me the kind of scholarship money that I need. I'm currently looking for lower ranked schools, cheaper schools where I have a high chance of getting large scholarships.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-09-07: LORs are FINALLY showing up as "recieved" in LSAC system! Here we go! Less than 2 hours after submitting my application, Chapman requested my LSAC report. Good sign??

LORs
Sunday, October 07 2007 at 08:00 PM

I would send your recommenders a friendly email asking if they need any other information that might help them write the letters. I called LSAC and they said it takes about 1-2 weeks to process a letter as received from when it reaches them...

Just Send Em'
Sunday, October 07 2007 at 08:00 PM

Hey SMS, I just found out that you don't need to have your letters processed to send in your apps. The schools will receive your LORs as they come in. Hope this speeds up your process!

Thank you!
Wednesday, November 07 2007 at 07:00 PM

I need the pointers. I plan on kicking ass and transferring anyway, so I will definitely put in apps to Hofstra and Pace. Good luck with your cycle!

Hey, thanks for stopping by! Of UIUC and UCLA, I would choose UCLA for the experience, the weather, and their African-American Studies Dept. However, in-state tuition at (and being able to drive home on one a half tank of gas) makes UIUC very attractive. Good luck this cycle!

Thanks

UIUC
Saturday, October 20 2007 at 08:00 PM

It states "decision, letter mailed" on the status checker online. This was Tuesday and I am expecting the letter today, based on others' turnaround times on LSN. I hope it's an acceptance! Seems like some people get rejected this early in the game by UIUC but most decisions now are acceptances. So there's a chance but who knows? I am holding out hope. Good luck on your schools.

Thursday, December 13 2007 at 07:00 PM

Thanks, I hope it turns out well, i let my schools know in an addendum that i was taking it over and to please consider my application incomplete until they receive it, because i was hoping my new score would have an impact.. But now the wait is driving me crazy.. lol

I just got my letter today. Big envelope with just papers. Don't sweat it, I'm sure you're in if they've decided on you already! Here is a preemptive congratulations. Now if you get rejected, you know who to blame for jinxing it. Haha, just kidding. Don't fret. It was 6 days for me from decision to the letter in my mailbox.

I'm not sure what my first choice is yet. I definitely hope they will give me some money if I do decide to go. It's definitely a factor for me. UIUC is certainly a top choice of mine, though, out of all my acceptances. Blows my mind I've hit the T25.

I guess I need a few more to catch up to you! I know you're gonna love UCLA when you get accepted, it's a beautiful campus in a nice part of LA if there is such a thing.

Ugh
Sunday, October 07 2007 at 08:00 PM

$40,000?!? For a state school? Wow, Berkeley is only $11,000 for in state from what I remember. Colorado is a nice school and I wouldn't exactly call it a safety in that I didn't have a great shot at getting in but my fiancee is applying to grad schools so everything has to match up. We'll see where we end up.

Thanks!
Thursday, January 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey, thanks. I'm excited about Emory, however if I get in any of the T14 schools I think...I know I'm going to have to give that up. Goodluck on your apps as well, congrats on your acceptances so far.

Congrats!
Sunday, October 07 2007 at 08:00 PM

On American. I'm sure you're going to get into San Diego but UIUC has to be hard to turn down, especially with money.

Re: UCLA
Saturday, October 20 2007 at 08:00 PM

Yeah, it sucks. I wouldn't bet on you getting accepted but I also wouldn't count you out. The lower admits in the previous years were blacks from CA so your shot is much better than mine, especially when coupled with your higher GPA. Keep hope alive ;) UIUC with $20k doesn't seem like too bad of a backup, no? Congrats on that significant cash.

Friday, September 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

Yeah I went undergrad there. I love the school. But you have to like going to school in a downtown environment. Some people don't like it because its in the middle of downtown Atlanta, but I love going to school in the city versus a traditional campus. Ive visited the law school many times and even sat in on a class or 2 and I was impressed. Why do you hate Atlanta?

Atlanta
Friday, September 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

Thats funny. I used to live in Moreno Valley CA, and I hate it in Cali, so I understand where you are coming from. I was raised in NY so Atl is a happy medium for me. I see you got waitlisted at UCLA, thats great, great school.

starts with a B
Sunday, October 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

This is too weird. Yes, the school I go to does start with a B. I am also in several of the pretty small clubs that you're in as well. Cool ... now I have to find out who you are without being creepish. Eitherway congrats on a stellar cycle. UIUC, PAC, American, UCLA (wl)... what a great batch you've got going for you.

First Choice
Monday, July 23 2007 at 08:00 PM

Right now I'm leaning towards GWU because I want to do government work after school so they seem like the best option for me. But honestly I'm not sure where I'll end up. I haven't visited anywhere yet so that and fin aid will help me make a decision. I'm just thankful to have a choice. Where do you plan on practicing? Do you know yet?

Bus System
Thursday, February 08 2007 at 07:00 PM

Is actually pretty good, a lot of the apartment complexes off campus here have either shuttle to campus, or a bus stop next to it. I have a car but only really use it to get to work. In a nutshell, you won't have a problem getting to and from the law school on the bus system.
